LB Conner Crowell (official thread)

North Point's Crowell ejected
Tuesday, September 7, 2010

All-Met senior linebacker and running back Conner Crowell was ejected after an altercation with an opposing player during the first quarter of North Point's season-opening 38-7 win over Northern on Friday night, and he is suspended for the Eagles' next game Friday at Lackey pending an appeal.

"I was just blocking this kid and I guess I was pushing him," Crowell said when reached by phone Monday. "I was blocking him good but then I stopped and he just starts yanking on me. A second later he yanked my helmet off and then I fell to the ground. I got up and I was just trying to get up and get away from him and he was still yanking on me so I guess I retaliated and I hit him, but the ref didn't see what had happened before that."

Crowell said his punch hit the Northern player on the leg. He was the only player ejected from the game.

Crowell said his coaches are appealing the suspension; a ruling is expected Tuesday.

Multiple calls to North Point Coach Ken Lane, Northern Coach A.J. Berberian and Charles County Athletics Supervisor Jan Johnson were not returned.

The 6-foot-1, 223-pound Crowell is considered one of the top recruits in the area. The list of schools recruiting him includes Ohio State, Penn State, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

"I never thought anything would be worse than losing but that was a worse feeling than losing," Crowell said. "Sitting on the sidelines hurt a lot."

Crowell's suspension upheld by district officials
By Greg Schimmel and James Wagner
Thursday, September 9, 2010

The Washington District Football Officials Association denied an appeal Tuesday to reinstate North Point All-Met senior linebacker Conner Crowell for Friday night's game against Lackey.

North Point was hoping to overturn the flagrant personal foul penalty that led to Crowell's ejection from the Eagles' 38-7 win over Northern on Friday night.

The ejection occurred after an on-field altercation with an opposing player at the end of a play during the first quarter and carries an automatic one-game suspension under Charles County rules.

"He was ejected from the game for a flagrant personal foul by the rule, and that's it. That's the end of us," said Al Ferraro, commissioner of the WDFOA.

The school has filed a second appeal to the Charles County Board of Education.

The school is contending officials on the field failed to see the opposing player's actions - the Northern player allegedly pushed Crowell to the ground and yanked his helmet off - and only caught Crowell's retaliatory punch to his opponent's leg.

Crowell, one of the area's top recruits, was the only player ejected from the game.

"Conner said he was just trying to get up but the officials saw it another way," North Point Athletic Director A.K. Johnson said. "We're disappointed with it but we have to honor that decision."

Conner Crowell is going to have a great seat for Ohio State's game against Miami this afternoon in Ohio Stadium. He knows it's going to be good - his spot in the stands, that is - because he figures it has to be close to the seat he had last year for the OSU-Southern California game.

"Our seats for that game, we were almost right on the field," Crowell said. "I talked to some people who were paying hundreds of dollars just for a seat somewhere in the stadium. I was grateful to have those seats. They made me feel real important."

That was the idea. Crowell gets in free because he is a prized defensive-end prospect from North Point High School in Waldorf, Md., whom the Buckeyes are still seeking for the 2011 recruiting class.

Crowell, meanwhile, will be on his official visit along with safety Jeremy Cash of Plantation, Fla., who has committed to OSU.

Crowell was asked what he wants to see most as he takes in the sights.

"Well, I hope to see Ohio State win," he said.

Although he isn't ready to commit, he'll be pulling for the Buckeyes because Miami isn't on his list of three finalists; the others are Penn State and Stanford.

Crowell has been to Ohio State a couple of times, so he has seen the football facilities, the Oval, the library and other familiar campus sights.

Today, he'll be seeking a feel, much like the one he gained while watching the USC game last year.

"I just like taking in the atmosphere, seeing what it's all about," Crowell said. "The last time when I was there for the USC game, it was amazing. It was just crazy. You could tell the fans are really dedicated to their football team. It was an awesome experience."

He gave Penn State similar high marks for home-game atmosphere.

"They are pretty much the same place when it comes to that," said Crowell, who plans to announce his choice on Nov. 5. "There are always 100,000-plus in the stands, and the fans at both places are just nuts about their football team. It would be hard to tell the difference, just based on that. They're both great."

I hope this is a misprint because at his current size he would be lucky to even have a DIII offer. I'm pretty sure he is an olb prospect.

The rule for Bruce Pearl was that there was to be no off-campus recruiting for a JR. Pearl's house was off of Tennessee's campus, Craft was a JR, and Pearl lied to the NCAA that the situation happend (which is a HUGE no-no).
