LB Curtis Grant (National Champion)

Katzenmoyer was considered the number 1 recruit in the nation by at least one publication. It was so long ago I forget the magazine (I want to say Athlon), but I know he was on the cover of their recruiting issue. Those were the dark ages before internet recruiting services were popular. I am pretty sure it even pre date Kurelic (at least on O Zone which only goes back to 97).

Anyway, to the point. Katzenmoyer was really hyped considering the fact people didn't follow recruiting anywhere near the way they do now.

Those were my days at OSU . kurelic had a 1-800,,,, later a website that died .Ozone was on before that but, that was a joke and died and came back The only solid thing was buckeye sports bullentin and Kurelic for weekly/monthly news and my friends on the teams. Your right about Athlon but, that was once a year . Heck, even Dick Vitale tried to get into basketball recruiting with a nice magazine about kids all over the country but, that died fast.

westerville south was loaded with talent katz and Carter/another player PSU

sorry back too Grant

We could be splitting hairs...

Kat was 1995 USA Today's best high school defensive player (and ready for a chuckle, best offensive player was Tim Couch).. and as Akronbuck sited, there was not much out there in the public scouting world
but
Grant was the #1 ranked OLB by everyone; #2 overall by Rivals (behind only Clowney) in the day of an omnipresent scouting world; film; etc...

nevertheless... expectations were/are sky high... Personally I expected a Kat-esk dominance.. so I am hoping we match the skillsets with the proper position..

Is Tom Couch related to Tim who once quarterbacked the Browns?

Last night I was walking out to the parking lot after work when an former First Sergeant friend of mine, whom I hadn't seen for a few years, called out to me. As I walked up to him, he asked if Curtis Grant is still playing us. After I said yes, my friend said that he played high school football with his dad (also named Curtis). He said when Curtis Sr. told him a few years ago that his son was one of the top LBs in the country and had signed with Ohio State, he thought Curtis Sr. was bullshitting him (not because he doubted "junior's" talent, but because he hadn't seen Curtis Jr. since he was little and didn't know how good Curtis had become). I told him that Curtis hadn't quite lived up to his high school hype as of yet, but that we were still expecting big things from him. Small world...

Dream scenario: Curtis wakes up, Braxton has better foot work and gets better making reads and some combo of Washington, Schutt and Spence blows up. Not sure if Curtis has the fire...seems to be down on himself since he didn't immediately take off as a frosh. Certainly seems to be an issue between the ears, he looks great on the hoof. I'm still pulling for the young man. Can not be overstated how big of an impact he could have next year if he does turn the corner. Dropping your starting spot almost immediately to Storm is not good. Not to be negative but I just haven't seen anything yet to give me hope...sometimes you see glimpses but so far......

Kind of surprised in this day and age, the First Sergeant did check it out on the web?

He hadn't seen his buddy for a long time and hadn't heard about his son until his buddy told him, so he initially thought his buddy was pulling his leg. Obviously, he checked his buddy's claims right after that. I guess he didn't follow Curtis Jr much after that and remembered about him when he saw me walking out to the parking lot, knowing I'm a big tOSU fan...

Guys I don't wanna be negative but Grant has major improvements to make...He looked lost on the field in the opportunities he had and IMO looked slow making decisions and in play recognition. I like the aforesaid point of maybe a 'Bino RS would make a difference...

A RS might be valuable for such a player, but with out limited schollys, is that something the staff even wants to entertain?

UM does not believe in redshirting freshman so I highly doubt he redshirts a junior. Unfortunately, with the level of talent that is coming it may be just make way and get out if the way. I sincerely hope not as he appears to be a good kid but he won't be the first big time recruit or the last that does not live up to the hype.

You can look back at Mike D'Andrea 's career here. Granted, he dealt with shoulder and knee injuries but he was an enigma before his injuries just like Grant.

Meyer doesn't redshirt players that are good enough to play regardless of what year they are. I would imagine he would have no qualms about redshirting a player who is not good enough to play regardless of what year they are either.

To quote myself from a previous post:

Buckeye86;2201537; said:
D'Andrea played in 13 games his freshman year (2002) and recorded 7 tackles. As a sophomore he had 24 tackles in 9 games before injury his shoulder. He injured his knee in 2004 after 4 games and 13 tackles which basically ended his career.

D'Andrea was competing for playing time against guys like Matt Wilhelm, Cie Grant, Robert Reynolds, A.J. Hawk, Fred Pagac Jr., and Bobby Carpenter before being injured in the 9th game of his sophomore season.

The LBs were so devastated by injuries in Grant's freshman season the official record book lists Andrew Sweat, Storm Klein and Tyler Moeller at 'star' as the starters. In his sophomore season he couldn't earn playing time over Storm Klein, a converted fullback and a true freshman (Josh Perry when Sabino was injured).

Despite this disparity in depth, D'Andrea had 31 tackles in his first two seasons to Grant's 10.

The situations are not at all similar.

That said, I am just as hopeful as anyone that the light turns on for Grant this season. From a source who spoke with him in person, Ryan Shazier expects Grant to be starting next to him this season.

Either way, it is beyond ridiculous to call a player an "enigma" before their junior season no matter how hyped they were coming out of high school.
