Hermitage's Grant, a top national defensive recruit, will get his wish this fall
Norm Wood's Inside Recruiting Inside Recruiting
May 2, 2010

When you've conquered one high school football position the way Curtis Grant has dominated at outside linebacker, it's understandable he might look for ways to make the game more challenging.

So, after two years of harassing coach Patrick Kane of Hermitage High in Richmond to put him in on offense a little more often, Grant is going to get his wish in his senior year. Why not? If you're Kane, you might as well find every possible way to utilize one of the nation's best players.

"We kind of used him a little bit at the end of last season as an H-back," Kane said. "We don't really have a tight end. We're kind of a spread team. We'll be using him a lot more on offense next year."

Don't be confused ? Grant's biggest impact will continue to be made on defense. Grant, a 6-foot-3, 222-pound rising senior, is considered by scout.com to be the nation's second-best outside linebacker recruit.

He already has more than 20 scholarship offers. Programs like Virginia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Florida, Southern California, Louisiana State, Ohio State, Nebraska, West Virginia, Miami, Tennessee and Michigan have all made overtures.

Grant is such a household name in recruiting circles he's probably not even going to bother this summer to attend on-campus recruiting camps, according to Kane.

Though Grant has played a lot at inside linebacker at Hermitage, his size and 4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash makes him an attractive candidate to possibly play outside linebacker in college. Last season, he finished with 154 tackles in 12 games.

ESPN RISE High School Football - ESPN RISE

Leading the linebacker group was LB MVP Curtis Grant from Hermitage (Richmond, Va.). Grant, a 6-foot-2, 226-pounder with speed, toughness and a mean streak, showed why he boasts offers from just about every top college program.

Travis Hughes of Kempsville (Virginia Beach, Va.) is shorter than Grant but boasted a more impressive frame and has the same non-stop motor.

"Both of those guys were incredible," lead linebacker coach Chris Gizzi said. "They're both good enough to build your defense around. Put them in the middle of your defense and their ability and work ethic will rub off on everyone else."

Where do you guys put our chances here? Are we really in the picture, or is it more that he just hasn't eliminated us yet? On the one hand, he plans to visit us. On the other, that's really the only pro-OSU news there's been. Then again he hasn't really been singing anyone's praises, so I'm at a loss really. What do you guys think?

See if he visits & then go from there

Tony Steward is perhaps the hardest-hitting linebacker we have evaluated since starting the ESPNU 150 - ESPN

Top prospects

Curtis Grant (Richmond, Va./Hermitage)
Ht.: 6-3 | Wt.: 220 pounds | Stars: 4 | ILB rank: 3 | ESPNU 150 rank: 44
College: Undecided
He grew on us during the ESPNU 150 evaluation process. Grant's great blend of size, range and athleticism became more apparent as we viewed additional film. While fluid for his size and capable of matching up with backs in coverage, his slow diagnosis skills and inconsistent hand technique through traffic give us some concern.

Panthers' linebacker adjusts to life as a coveted recruit
Curtis Grant -- Hermitage's star middle linebacker (Added: September 09, 2010)

Curtis Grant by the numbers
Age: 17
Height: 6-3
Weight: 230 pounds
Scholarship offers : 27
40-yard-dash : 4.5 seconds
Bench press : 310 pounds
Squat: 525 pounds
Hex bar deadlift : 610 pounds

Every day around 2 p.m., a white U.S. Postal Service truck arrives at Curtis Grant's house on the north side of Henrico County. Along with the bills and coupons that arrive in each load, every day, another piece of mail arrives from a different NCAA football program.

On the front of the envelope is the school logo. Inside is a short note -- often handwritten by the head coach -- wishing Grant luck in his senior season at Hermitage, reminding him the value of teamwork or simply quoting a Bible verse.

"You name it, we get it," Gloria Grant, Curtis' mother, said.

The Grant family has gotten used to such attention. It's part of life when your son is one of the top 10 high school football players in the entire country. Grant has 27 scholarship offers -- probably the most ever in the Metro area -- many of them coming from the best programs in the country, including Alabama, Florida, Southern California and Ohio State.

So the question persists: Where will Grant go to college? Don't hold your breath waiting for the answer. Grant, a middle linebacker who is ranked the ninth best player in the country by Rivals, won't choose a school until after his senior season. The decision could come as late as national signing day, Feb. 2, 2011.

And if Grant is the highest-profile player left in the country to make his commitment, ESPN could be in the Hermitage library to cover his announcement.

Until he pulls the trigger, don't expect him to give any hints as to where he's going. While many high school seniors embrace the spotlight by announcing finalists, Grant has shied away from making his selection process a public spectacle.

"It's all right," Grant said of the attention. "But sometimes it can be a head case."

Speculating on Curtis Grant
By Eric Kolenich

RICHMOND --

Curtis Grant's father has indicated that there are a few things Curtis is looking for when making his college selection. That enables us to rule out a few schools. There are no guarantees here, mostly speculation.

Grant took visits to UCLA and USC. Grant's father said if Curtis were to pick either of these schools, he'd try to convince him to change his mind. Both schools are a long trip for Grant's family to come watch his games. Plus, Grant wants to play in a bowl game, and USC is on probation, so that most likely rules USC out, too.

He wants to play his freshman year. No coach has given him the guarantee that he can do that yet. They've all told him, if he beats out the player ahead of him, he'll start his freshman year. This doesn't narrow down the field too much, because there are so many programs with talented linebackers who aren't going anywhere next year.

Alabama has Dont'a Hightower, a sophomore, UNC has Kevin Reddick, a sophomore, and Clemson has Corico Hawkins, a sophomore. With the exception of Hightower, who weighs 260 pounds, the other two have weights comparable to Grant's 230 pounds.

Another factor is stability of the coaching staff. Alabama's Nick Saban is signed through 2017. With Urban Meyer's past health issues at Florida, he adds a factor of instability to the progam.

Then there's UVA. Grant's father predicts UVA to probably be out of the running. A lot of local players have committed to UVA, and Grant wants to start his own football family. He also said there's no home-state discount, meaning Grant won't go to a lower-level program just because of the state-ties.

Lastly, there are still wild cards to consider. Grant is still looking to make trips to Ohio State, LSU and maybe Michigan. If Grant finds that one of those schools has the right combination, he might go there.
