LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

Father's illness inspires LB Mike Mitchell's new start at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Mike Mitchell sped down the dark West Texas highway knowing he had forgotten to set his DVR. He would make it back to Lubbock in time to catch the second half of Ohio State’s national championship romp against Oregon, and made sure to text a few Buckeyes -- Ezekiel Elliott and his old roommates -- when it was over.

"I know how hard they worked," Mitchell said. "They deserved it."

He could have made a much shorter drive to Arlington to see his former teammates win it all at AT&T Stadium that Monday night. He had spent a year facing off against Cardale Jones on the practice squad, a year building toward this grand moment. But Mitchell had better plans. He spent the day with family in Plano.

Linebacker Mike Mitchell left Ohio State to play at Texas Tech so he can be closer to his family. They are why he left the eventual national champs to start over at Texas Tech. The sophomore linebacker came home to be closer to his father, former NFL linebacker Ken Mitchell, during his continued bout with a debilitating neurological disorder.

"We tried to talk him into staying at Ohio State," Ken said, "because he’d have a starting role. I said, 'Mike, c'mon, we can get through this.' But he said this was something he had to do. He said, 'This is more important to me.'"

So, are we still blaming losing him on not burning his redshirt?

Now transferring from TT.....

Tech also announces Mike Mitchell will transfer. Will be the former ESPN 300 LB’s 2nd transfer. Originally arrived at Tech from Ohio St

Does anybody in here knows where MM will play at, if he is transferring from Texas Tech. He gives me the impression that it appears Mike is very much un-decided what he wants from Life.

So, in one fairly fell swoop we got Mike Mitchell, Mickey Mitchell and Austin Grandstaff to come to Columbus from Texas. All very promising athletes, from whom to date we've seen a few minutes of play from a tall wing guard who doesn't play defense, and who now is bolting in a manner similar to Mike Mitchell.

I'll admit Mickey Mitchell is the one of the bunch I was most excited about, but I have to be wondering right now what the heck is going on with these guys. And I'm hoping that, one day, we'll actually see Mickey in a Buckeye uniform. I'm not all that optimistic, though, unfortunately.

Agreed with LitlBuck. There was a connection AAU maybe?, that had them both coming to tOSU, even with Mickey's big brother Mike moving on to the Goatropers. Not sure whether this is part of the 'vagabond' recruits, but cannot see how this will come out well for Mike. Hope I'm wrong. Grandstaff seems to personify the 'if I ain't a gonna play, i'm outa here' attitude, but not entirely certain that minutes was the major reason. Not sure why Mickey is still being jammed up by NCAA, but they're certainly not busting their tails to work out for the kid's benefit. Maybe vagabond is too harsh, and carpetbaggers would be more apt. Regardless, hope these young people can find their niche, and feel good about what and where they are. In any case, Go Bucks!
