All eyes on Mike Mitchell
Mitchell keeps a low profile in Texas, but he's coming up big at The Opening

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Mike Mitchell may not have known it then, but his performance at Friday's SPARQ rating national championship at The Opening wasn't just for him.

He was representing the entire Lone Star State.

As the last participant in the SPARQ 40-yard dash, Mitchell needed a blazing time to take the national title. Not only did he produce a 4.39-second 40 time -- ridiculously fast for a 6-foot-4, 220-pound linebacker -- but he also set the national SPARQ rating record with a score of 154.47.

The Opening

Many of the nation's top prospects will battle it out at The Opening at Nike HQ.

When the 40 time was announced, the Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian star was mobbed by The Opening players many of them being Texans. Although Mitchell grew up in Winter Park, Fla., he's been in Texas for more than two years, long enough to earn the respect of his peers.

"We've got the best athlete in the country," Tennessee commit Kameron Miles (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) said of Mitchell. "It made me proud. That's Texas. He's Texas."

Landing him would take some sting away from losing Anzalone. Two, extremely athletic LB recruits that I think are destined for great college careers.

I concur. And he'd look great in the middle with say, josh perry and boom perkins on the outside in the next few years. Coach urban is building up a stellar defense at all facets. Would love to see what coach fickell could do with him at the college level.

Prestonwood LB Mike Mitchell says Ohio State his front-runner, but others still in mix
GREG RIDDLE
Published: 10 July 2012

Prestonwood linebacker Mike Mitchell, one of the state?s top football recruits, said he could make an oral commitment in three or four weeks and that Ohio State is at the top of his list.

?They?re the front-runner, but I guess there is still a possibility of someone else,? said the 6-4, 220-pound Mitchell, who is ranked fifth in the state and 45th in the nation in the Class of 2013 by Rivals.com. ?It?s just a great school with a great coaching staff. Everybody knows coach [Urban] Meyer. He?s got an awesome reputation. It would be a great opportunity to play there. ? I?m planning to make a trip up to Ohio State in a couple of weeks.?

Mitchell, who transferred from Plano West, is still considering Florida State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State and said he hopes to get in contact with Georgia. He also said Florida has started to show interest since he ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and won the SPARQ national championship with a record score at The Opening last week.

Mitchell?s younger brother, Mickey, is ranked by ESPN as the the nation?s second-best basketball recruit in the Class of 2015. Mike said he could end up at the same school as his brother.

?If he likes the basketball program at the school I?m at. If they?re a good team, like Ohio State would have a good basketball team, it could work out,? Mike said.

In the near future, there might be defenses as good as ours, but I highly doubt there will be any better.

Lets let them actually don a Buckeye Jersey first, ok . Mike hasn't even committed yet and anyone who visits Fla State will be a tough get. Just imo.
