Nebraska fans - first class treatment in Lincoln

I would be remiss if I didn't comment on how well the Nebraska fans treated the Buckeye visitors in Lincoln over the weekend. Perhaps this has been mentioned in the game thread which I haven't read yet, but even so, it deserves its own thread, at least temporarily.

My buddy and I got to Lincoln around 9 am on Saturday morning. We spent a lot of time walking around the stadium area, tailgating with some Nebraska fans, and talking to many of them after the game was over.

The number of times we heard any Buckeye fans being treated rudely by any Huskers: zero.

The number of times that we heard "Welcome to Lincoln", "We're glad you're here", "How do you like Lincoln"", "Good luck today", and simliar comments: I can't give a good estimate, and it's not because I was drinking, it's because the number was an amazingly high one.

We met BP guest knapplc (that ends in 'L C', not 'I C"), and he was escorting a group of Buckeye fans, explaining who was in the statues besides Tom Osborne and telling them other things about the stadium. He walked us around the area for a while, and then we ended up back at a tailgate that was close enough to one of the statues that my tired old arm could've thrown a football that far. It was the same lot that Warren Buffett parks in, but he doesn't normally join the tailgaters. We were treated very well by our gracious Nebraska fans, and had a fine time tailgating there and talking football, while hoping that the high winds wouldn't blow away their tailgate!

On a side note, MaliBuckeye stopped by, and he was kind enough to explain that the first part of his user name comes from Malibu (I honestly had not figured that out) without asking me if the 73 in my name came from my IQ.

In the afternoon, we left the tailgate to head over to the Buckeye Bash at a theater downtown. That was a good time, I got to shake hands and say Hi to Gordon Gee and Archie Griffin. After those two talked to the crowd and the cheerleaders were on stage for a bit, they had a little Buckeye trivia contest. The emcee was asking questions from the stage and folks would just yell out the answers from the audience. Some wiseass in the front row got 5 in a row correct before the pressure got to him. They only gave me 2 free drink coupons for all of those answers, but it was getting late and I could barely down them both before leaving the theater - we couldn't take drinks outside, and I wasn't going to waste free beer!

After that, we went to the game, and like almost everybody on this board, we loved the first two and a half quarters a lot better than the last quarter and a half. After the game, we went back to the Nebraska tailgate where we'd spent a fair amount of time earlier in the day. We congratulated them on their big comeback victory, and wished them well for the rest of the season. Everybody agreed that we'd root for the others' team to beat TSUN. They were pleased that we came back to talk to them after a rough loss, although based on how well they treated visitors it's the type of thing they deserved in return.

Side note to Gatorubet - In case you were wondering what happened to the shoes Tommie Frazier wore in the 62-24 game, I'm now on good terms with the Husker lady that has them (She really does - he signed them - and any money he got for them was OK since that was his last game :wink2:).

We heard some stories of some Nebraska fans that were shocked at how badly they had been treated in Madison the week before. That's not a surprise to most Buckeye fans that have been there, but it was a rude welcome to many Huskers into the B1G.

I realize that I can't convince everybody how they should treat visitors to Columbus. But how opposing fan bases are treated does make a difference in how a University and a community are perceived. If somebody wants to be rude to a Wisconsin fan because of how they were treated in Madison, I can understand that sentiment.

But when the folks from Nebraska make the visit to the Horseshoe next year, please try to remember to treat them as you would like to be treated; because that's what they do extremely well, and that's what they deserve in return.

Okay - but what will you have to do to her to actually SEE the shoes?

Great post. I'd love to get out to Lincoln for a game.
Highly recommend it.

We got in around 4pm Friday - went to "The Steak House" on Cornhusker Hwy and made our way down to O Street. We went to a handful of bars, the Elk Creek Water at Sandy's was pretty damn good, especially being made with Bacardi & Everclear (found that out at the next bar). Missed the Sidetrack Band which was a bummer, but had a damn good time. The only bar district in B1G land that was better than Lincoln's was Iowa. And not by much.

The people were awesome. It became almost comical. EVERY fan Friday night would come up, ask if we were from Ohio and say "Welcome to Nebraska!" and shake our hands. They pride themselves on being "the best fans in the country" and man, it was really kind of weird. Not one ill word was spoken to us ALL night. They're happy to be in the B1G, hate Texas, and had a bad experience in Wisky.

It was embarassing having to apologize for our fanbase in advance for next year.. these guys were great, and I hope they get treated the same around here. We warned them of Penn State and apologized for Whisky.

Great time, cool city, awesome stadium. They love their football about as much as we do - great addition to the B1G.

I live in Omaha (home of the CWS), but there's no atmosphere in the entire state like gameday down in Lincoln. I don't get down that way too often (I'm not a blue hair with tickets since Moses was a student, LOL), but when I do, it's me and the wife.

We don't drink (I know, I know - I USED to drink), so we do our own 'tailgating' where we have an early breakfast, go to the stadium before the gates open, and have fun with the rest of the fans there.

There's just something about getting into the Old Girl on 10th and Vine and seeing her when she's empty. If you love the pagentry and tradition of college football, it's a humbling sight. It's also amazing to see her fill up prior to kickoff.

You guys have TBDBITL, Script Ohio, Skull sessions, and other traditions. That's what I love about college football.

But as a Husker fan....there's nothing above the singing of Touchdown USA, Hail Varsity, and the Husker Power chant leading into the Tunnel Walk. You have to be there for that to appreciate the way that basically, two guys built Nebraska football into a brand (Devaney and Doc Tom).

I love to read these stories from visitors after they've had a chance to visit. Thanks for posting. I'm really glad everyone had a good experience in general. I know the game didn't work out, but Nebraska fans put all of their energy into those 7-8 home games a year and want to make it the best experience possible. Even when we lose, Nebraska fans line the opponent's walkway back to their locker room and applaud. It's just a really cool experience. I promised myself I would take my kids to do that one day so they learn what it can be like.

OSU fans won't understand this next part because they would never be in this situation, but the negative part of being annoyingly nice fans is that we don't get too worked up during a game unless it's a big one (like OSU). It takes a special opponent to get our stadium as worked up as it was last Saturday. I hope in time our fans learn as much passion from the Big Ten fans as hopefully everyone learns a little bit from the NU fans.

Great stuff, thanks again for sharing....

I wouldn't say it's because OSU fans are "too nice" but there is certainly a rather blase (I hate that I can't write this word properly :pissed: ) attitude about the stadium during the walk-over home games. More just being spoiled than being particularly nice.

It's pleasing to read that people had a good time in Lincoln. When my in-laws lived there, I found it to be a cool city. Never been there for a game nor got to be any where that housed a lot of 'Husker fans, but in general, I'd say that Nebraskans are good people. Of course, being married to one makes that statement rather biased.

Again, thanks to knapplc and BB73 for the morning hospitality, and for the rest of Lincoln Nebraska for the warm welcome. Even coming home today (wearing my scarlet and gray proudly), I was asked several times if I had a good visit and was treated well.

Then, I was told that the only hope they had was Braxton getting hurt... which is why they hired the sniper at halftime.

A little late, but I wanted to relay my experience as well, even though it sounds like every Buckeye shared the same hospitality and stories that I had.

Picked up a Nebraska fan and another Buckeye on the way out to Lincoln. Stayed a few miles away from the stadium with the Cornhusker's in-laws. Great, fun, people...and it didn't hurt at all that 2 of the guys that showed us around were Budweiser reps, so the beers were flowing.

Unbelievable. It became a bit of a joke with my fellow Buckeye fan as we encountered this a countless number of times. What Bill laid out here is word-for-word what I heard and I'd laugh it off and let them know that it's been nothing but incredible.

The concern for how we were treated was remarkable. They really do take pride in being gracious hosts and the best fans in the country.

Went from
:banger:
to
:so:

You know those camera shots of the fans that have that 1000-yard stare that they love to capture?

I would have been a prime candidate, poster-child for a screen capture that opposing fans laugh at for years to come. Luckily, they avoided my ugly mug (at least, I haven't heard of any friends mention me getting some airtime... embarrassed to claim me, perhaps).

After Nebraska scored their TD I turned to my Nebraska friend and simply said, "This isn't good" despite the fact we were up 14. I knew it was over and he saw it in me as I stood in silence the rest of the game (ok, I was still cheering, but it was a fruitless effort).
Everybody agreed that we'd root for the others' team to beat TSUN.
Randomly saw about 6-10 Michigan shirts/fans down in Lincoln.

Took jello shots with one lady in the Embassy Suites/Hineygate type of tailgate area (of course I'll take free alcohol off their hands).

And took some jabs with a couple others Michigan fans as I was talking to a couple Cornhuskers and they walked by. The Nebraskans were impressed with my hatred for Michigan fans.
We heard some stories of some Nebraska fans that were shocked at how badly they had been treated in Madison the week before. That's not a surprise to most Buckeye fans that have been there, but it was a rude welcome to many Huskers into the B1G.
The small sample I talked to said they weren't too bad. But many other accounts say otherwise. Fuck Bucky.

And I warned them about Penn State. They were appalled at why people would do that. Penn State and Nebraska are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
I realize that I can't convince everybody how they should treat visitors to Columbus. But how opposing fan bases are treated does make a difference in how a University and a community are perceived. I also warned some that Columbus will be a little different. And it wasn't something I was proud of.

I'll assume that the first visit and the fact their is little history for hate will make the trip a pleasant one for most.

Absolutely. Disappointed that this won't be available on a more regular basis. I'm still young (22), but I'm very glad I took advantage of this opportunity because I'm not sure how often something like this comes around, just no guarentees. It was a great experience for my friends and I.

I'll do my best to make it out each time the Bucks match up in Lincoln.

Discussed above but I'll add- I joked with a few fans that they treated me better than my immediate family with how much concern and care they showed.

They do love being in the B1G and I welcomed them and wished them the best. Hoping to see them again in Indianapolis (my hometown), however slim those possibilities seem.
It was embarassing having to apologize for our fanbase in advance for next year.. these guys were great, and I hope they get treated the same around here. We warned them of Penn State and apologized for Whisky.
Yep. Did the same.

I really do hope Buckeye fans treat the Huskers with HALF as much respect as I was treated with in Lincoln.
Great time, cool city, awesome stadium. They love their football about as much as we do - great addition to the B1G.
Perhaps the best feeling about talking football with Nebraska fans was their understanding of everything. They didn't have anything negative to say about our off-the-field issues and even related to our troubles, saying that it goes on everywhere (and I got to hear a couple stories from the locals :wink2:...True or not, they understand big-time college football).

Following the game, they were also understanding about the injury and even admitted that they were toast if Braxton doesn't go out. Just the most humble and nicest group I've ever met. It was hard to even handle at times (halfway kidding).

I'm sure there's more to add and I have quite the number of stories from the trip (let's say I drank a lot this past weekend...A LOT), but I'll just leave it with a hearty THANK YOU to Nebraska and what an honor it is to have them in the Conference. The B1G hit a homerun.

First class, indeed.

Its wonderful reading all the stories in this thread, and those in several other threads too - about how well you were all treated. My Buckeye wife echoes that, although since she was with a Husker husband it wasn't quite as surprising to you.

Nebraska is spoken of by (some) sportswriters as "the best fans in college football." I'd never beat my chest and make that claim myself - its much more gratifying to hear visiting fans stories. Wish I'd had a chance to meet more of you - maybe next year at the 'Shoe if we can find a couple reasonably priced tickets. Hopefully if we hang out with BuckeyePlanet folks, we'll be sure to be treated well! :)

On a related note, does BuckeyePlanet host a tailgate party at home games?

Really makes me feel good to read that - thanks! And, as you saw, Nebraska and its fans are just as honored to be in the B1G as you are to have us there. First class, indeed - indeed!

For the rest of the season...

Go Huskers! :neb2:

Go Buckeyes!:osu3:

Sure hope you get Braxton back next week.
