Nick Saban (ex-HC Alabama Crimson Tide)

Somebody's Heine' is crowdin' my icebox...
Per college football news Nick Saban of LSU might be headed to Cleveland. No links yet, but on there front page in breaking news it talks about it. I dont know if I like this choice, due to the lack of success college coaches have had at the professional level. I guess we will have to wait and see...

Had great success as a DC in Cleveland. I like the fact that we are going back to our team history to find a guy. I like someone who connects with the tradition of Browns football and understands the way our fans want our team to play. Screw Miami North...I want a dominating D, punishing runners and a leader at quarterback.

I was under the impression we were looking for a GM first. Jim Brown is talking to Ozzie now. PLEASE bring some of the old guys back! I want the new Browns to start feeling like the old ones.

Good point about him being a DC for four years with the Browns. But, LSU is coming off a sub par season. I know they lost alot but at times LSU didnt look very good this year. I know you cant totally blame that on the coach, but some has to be put on his shoulders. If Saban does get hired, alot of changes are going to be needed to be made very quickly. Cleveland fans are getting tired of this bullshit.

Did I miss this the Browns getting their General manager position all straightened out?

I thought that was their first order of business, then the search for a coach.

Everything I have read says hiring a GM is the first choice. He will then help select the coach. I personally am not sold on another college coach for the Browns. So many have failed and only a few have had any kind of success. I would rather yank a coordinator who is currently in the NFL. However, the GM choice is going to be the more important choice. Also, everything I read before was that Saban wanted personnel control, which is not going to happen in Cleveland now with any coach.

There's your problem right there. If JB is in charge of the hiring, no way Saban gets the job. Why is he involved at all?

He's not in charge of anything...

Oh yeah, maybe this would help your formula:

Mike Brown + a bazillion dollars= Randy Lerner.

"Mike Brown + a bazillion dollars= Randy Lerner"

Right, so instead of bargains like David Shula and Bruce Coslet, he can hire the high price morons like Butch Davis.

I'm not sure I've seen enough from Randy Lerner to show intelligence.

The reason you haven't seen much of him is because he really hasn't done anything yet... of course he didn't hire Butchems.... and he has hired a consultant to help him find a GM... the one thing Randy has going for him is that he doesn't have any delusions that he has the football mind of his daddy... which Mike is finally figuring out... only took him 15 years... but.. hey...

I'm not sure I've seen enough from Randy Lerner to show intelligence.
Not only that, we've all seen barely enough of Randy Lerner to know anything. If one things for certain though, Randy Lerner has to be given respect where respect is due. His father held butch davis in high regard and believed he was the man to fix the browns. Right or wrong, you have to respect that Randy honored his fathers vision of the browns future and let Butch have his shake and backed him up last year with the contract extension and the consolodation of power. Probably kind of like carrying out his dad's last wishes. Even though I was calling for butch davis' head for a long time, I respect that.

When it became apparant that Butch wasn't going to bring a winner to Cleveland, Randy did what he had to do and pulled the trigger on butch regardless of the contract and knowing it would create a giant power vaccum in the organization. He's decided on an organizational model, and has stated that if it means waiting till after the super bowl to bring in a gm, he's willing to wait. The names that are circulating for potential GM's are all seemingly good options (Newsome, Savage, Pioli) who have proven ability.

So there's nothing that you can really do in the meantime except try to cast a line and see who's interested, which the organization is obviously doing due to all the rumors. But Lerner is actually a browns fan in the blood. He knows the browns just haven't felt the same since 94. So what he's doing is building up good will and trust with tbe fans, and he's doing it agressively. He's got big name guys with a lot of respect amongst browns fans ought there spreading good vibes in the media. You can't knock that, it's a great strategy. (Especially when you realize Jim Brown isn't the devil. He's a good, generous, honest, decent man.) Anyway, the bottom line is that Randy isn't anything at all like Mike Brown. At all.

Say what you want about Randy Lerner, but he is about putting the fans first and he wants Browns fans to have a winner in Cleveland.

Browns fans will need to be patient with Lerner, but they also realize that he is dedicated to bringing a winning franchise back to Cleveland.

Randy went quickly from being a fan to becoming an owner with his father's passing. I think some of his initial decisions were based on being brand new to the whole owner thing but also any decisions contrary to his father's actions might have been considered by Randy to admit his father was wrong. How tough would it be to lose the man you looked up to your entire life and then have to admit your father may have made some bad decisions.

I have no doubt the Lerner family owning the Browns is the best thing that could happen to that franchise. Randy is quickly learning and is now going about the process in the right way by hiring football minds to run the business. I think he realizes he is a fan who needs to rely on football professionals to right this ship and that a meddling owner is not what is needed now.
