Buckeye Football Commitment Impact: Tate Martell

TateMartellOSU2.jpg

The Buckeyes received a commitment from Las Vegas quarterback Tate Martell (Bishop Gorman / Las Vegas, NV) Sunday night, giving Ohio State its second quarterback in the 2017 class. Martell is the Buckeyes' second commitment in the 2017 class from national power Bishop Gorman, joining defensive tackle Haskell Garrett. So what kind of impact does this commitment have on OSU now and down the road? Let's take a look.

The Player

Tate Martell is rated the No. 1 quarterback in the nation per Scout and the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by 247Sports and Rivals. He has led his Bishop Gorman team to back-to-back national championships and a 30-0 total record as a starting quarterback.

As a sophomore Martell completed 124-of-200 passes (62.0%) for 2,537 yards with 40 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Last year as a junior he completed 133-of-237 passes (56.1%) with 32 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also rushed for a total of 1,037 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two seasons as a starter.

As a quarterback, it is easy to see how comfortable Martell is whether in the pocket or on the move outside of it. He is accurate from either venue, and dangerous from wherever he finds himself.

Yes, he is only 5-foot-11, but he is very quick and plenty fast enough to compensate. His toughness has never been a question, nor has his durability, as he has not missed a game as a starter the last two seasons.

As a runner, Martell can get to the corner and pick up first downs at the sticks, but he also has an incredible ability to keep plays alive behind the line of scrimmage. He is a calm play maker who appears to make players around him better.

Martell will play in the Army All-American Bowl in January and will also be participating in Nike's The Opening in Beaverton, Oregon next month. He was once committed to Washington and Texas A&M.

The Comparison

Even before Martell was a Texas A&M commit, he was drawing comparisons to former Aggie Heisman winner Johnny Manziel in part because of his height, and in part because of the way he would evade sacks in the backfield and end up making plays down the field.

Tate Martell is one of Urban Meyer's highest-rated quarterback recruits ever

usa-today-8107314.0.jpg

ban Meyer has recruited and coached an incredible lineup of quarterbacks during his tenure at Florida and Ohio State. After inheriting Chris Leak at Gainesville, his very first quarterback commit in the 2006 recruiting class was future Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.

His newest quarterback commit, 2017's Tate Martell, is currently the top dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 class and further extended Ohio State's lead as the best recruiting class in the country according to 247 Sports Composite Team Rankings. He'll join 2016's Dwayne Haskins, who Urban Meyer called "the best QB recruit he's ever seen."

So how does Martell compare to the best quarterbacks that Meyer has recruited?

Seems like a choke you over checkers type of young man. A guy from Scout said on Bruce Feldman's podcast that Martell was the most competitive player at the Elite 11 Camp and one of the 2 most competitive players he's seen there in the last 5 years (other one being Shea Patterson fwiw...)

Makes you wonder if Urban didn't maybe just get his mini-Tebus
