Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Don't worry about Johansen. Going to the media was stupid, but he'll be a Blue Jacket.

Columbus is quiet today. They traded Frattin (piece from the Gaborik to LA trade) for Jerry D'Amigo and a conditional 7th rounder. D'Amigo could top out as a pretty solid third line player. But it's a very minor deal. Mackenzie is now a Florida Panther and Comeau is a Penguin. Pretty quiet day in Columbus on the first day of free agency.

Somebody's list of the top 60 NHL prospects.

The Blue Jackets have 2:

13. Alexander Wennberg, C, Columbus Blue Jackets

Bigger and stronger than when the Blue Jackets picked him 14th in the 2013 draft, Wennberg brings a high-end offensive game to the lunch-pail Columbus offense. "Alex is a very cerebral hockey player … his transition to the North American style of play will be quick due to his intelligence on the ice," Scout B said.

42. Sonny Milano, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets

After spending the summer vacillating on his future, the 16th pick of the 2014 draft opted to sign with Plymouth of the OHL. But whether it was the OHL or Boston College, where he first committed, the Blue Jackets were going to enjoy watching the energetic, skilled forward who was second on a talented USNTDP U-18 team last season with 86 points. Signing with Plymouth also allows Milano to attend training camp with the Blue Jackets, and while the option exists for him to play in the NHL or the AHL, it's likely Milano spends at least one season in the OHL. Voters liked Milano enough to name him on four ballots, including No. 16 on one.

Others receiving votes:
Marko Dano, C, Columbus
Mike Reilly, D, Columbus

a month until TC and still no sight of Johansen signing, still very far apart on talks

Blue Jackets notebook: Johansen talks likely to resume

It has been six weeks since the Blue Jackets and center Ryan Johansen’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, have had contract negotiations, but that is expected to change this weekend.

Blue Jackets management, along with most of the organization’s top prospects, are traveling on Thursday to the annual prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich. Overhardt, will be there, too, starting Friday, and sources said the sides are expected to meet face to face for the first time.

“The last time they contacted us, (the offer) wasn’t something that merited further talks,” Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said.

If Johansen, a restricted free agent, isn’t signed by next Wednesday, he will be asked to vacate his space in the Blue Jackets’ dressing room at Nationwide Arena and to stay away from the building.

CBJ with a come from behind 5-3 win over Detroit last night, play for the Traverse City title tomorrow.

Going to see a whole new roster for CBJ next year as i dont see how you can keep Dano, Wennberg, Rychel off the roster, plus probably Milano

NHL: Ryan Johansen, Jackets continue stare down

With the NHL prospects tournament serving as the backdrop, Blue Jackets management and the agent for Ryan Johansen are spending the last weekend of the offseason in Traverse City, Mich., trying to hammer out a new contract for the club’s star center.
The Blue Jackets are negotiating with the NHL’s collective-bargaining agreement in their right hands. Johansen has no arbitration rights and has not signed an offer sheet from another team. So what choice does he have, they reason, but to sign their market-value offer of $3.5 million per season?

Johansen’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, is using the glare of Johansen’s 2013-14 season — he led the club and tied for 11th in the league with 33 goals — as his guide. His potential sets the market value, Overhardt reasons, which is why he’s asking for roughly $6.5 million per season.

The only leverage Johansen has left — short of an out-of-nowhere offer sheet — is to withhold his services when training camp opens with physicals and testing on Thursday.

Asked if holding a 22-year-old out of training camp, and possibly the start of the regular season, would put undo pressure on Johansen, Overhardt said: “No, not at all. If he’s not in camp, the pressure slips to the other side.”

Coach Todd Richards said he remains hopeful the sides can reach an agreement.

Jackets preparing for life without Johansen

With neither side ready to budge in the contract negotiations for restricted free agent center Ryan Johansen, Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards is making plans to start without his top center.

Johansen had a career year in 2013-14 scoring 33 goals and 63 points in 82 games as the team’s top center.

However, without him under contract, Richards plans to move his centers up a line.

“We want him in the lineup,” Richards told the Columbus Dispatch. “But we’ll move on without him if he’s not in the lineup. It’s like an injured player. If he’s not there, he’s not. You have to move on. You don’t have a choice.”

Ideally, the Jackets depth chart at center would begin with Johansen followed by Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov and Mark Letestu – not a bad looking group.

In his blog, Aaron Portzline suggests that without Johansen, Dubinsky, Anisimov and Letestu could all move up a line without being asked to do too much.

The team also believes 21-year-old Boone Jenner could move from the wing to his natural center ice position.

“Boone is an obvious choice to move, if it comes to that,” Richards said. “His flexibility is a real asset.”

If Johansen isn’t in the mix to start the season, prospect Alexander Wennberg’s chances of making the team also go up.

Johansen is not making a positive name for himself with his demands and what appears will be a hold out.

the CBJ should stick it to him. If he wants to be a bitch and not sign the bridge contract, he's perfectly able to sit at home all year.

Absolutely agree. The CBJ went down this route of signing guys on potential (I'm talking about you, Brassard) and it went to shit. Give the team more than one good season before you start demanding star money.

Except this isn't football or baseball where thats his only option, he could go play in europe or in the KHL, if he goes to the KHL we may never get him back

If he goes to the KHL or Europe then fuck him and the high horse he rode away on. NHL GMs all have long memories and more importantly, your reputation as a player can be damaged by such a move in a way that will taint his entire career.

And don't be so sure he can just walk to European teams. There is a transfer agreement there. Also, if he goes to the KHL, he might as well stay there, because he won't be coming back to the NHL for a few years.

You don't cave to these type of players after 1 good year. That's what got previous GMs in Columbus into the mess they've been in since the franchise was given to the city.
