McKinley blanks Buchtel in opener

CANTON There are times when McKinley’s offense can take a broken down, ugly play and turn it into the prettiest girl at the prom. And then there are times when, well, those plays can look like they really need Eric Glover-Williams to dress them in the make-up room.
. . .
Filtz, in his second season, had a heavy dose of Glover-Williams and sprinkled in enough to running back Jarrod Smith to keep him hungry and Buchtel honest. The Bulldogs’ passing game wasn’t much of a threat and left many watching a one-dimensional offense with two dynamic runners.
“You see what effect (Glover-Williams) has,” Filtz said. “When things look like they’re slowing down, he pops a big play. He’s a dynamic player.”
Glover-Williams finished with 155 yards rushing on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Smith had 131 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Glover-Williams completed 4 of 9 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown pass.

Canton McKinley 35, Buchtel 0: Eric Glover-Williams makes life difficult for Buchtel
By Jeff Brewer
Special to the Beacon Journal
CANTON: Canton McKinley star Eric Glover-Williams is one of the most elusive high school football players in the nation.
After one series, it appeared as if Glover-Williams would turn the Buchtel Griffins inside out.
The Bulldogs dominated on the scoreboard, winning Friday night’s season opener 35-0, but the Griffins’ defensive unit earned some respect after chasing Glover-Williams around Fawcett Stadium.
“I thought our defense played pretty well,” Buchtel coach Ricky Powers said. “We just have to do something on offense. We have to move the ball. We have to help the defense out a little bit.”
Having recently committed to Ohio State, Glover-Williams, a junior quarterback, is projected as a slot receiver for the Buckeyes. He accounted for three touchdowns, two rushing and one passing.
“[Glover-Williams] is a dynamic player and, man, we’re really glad to have him on our team,” McKinley coach Todd Filtz said. “I think he continues to get better as an athlete, as a leader, and as a student.”
Glover-Williams finished with 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, and completed four passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
McKinley’s first possession resembled a video game. Glover-Williams capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run. He carried five times on the drive for 57 yards and appeared unstoppable.
“We want that first drive to set the tone for the whole game,” Glover-Williams said. “We just pounded the ball for the first game.”

I went on down the road tonight to watch EGW and McKinley play. It was a rough night for Eric. He fumbled away his only opportunity on a PR and then suffered an apparent ankle injury on his second or third carry of the game. He missed the rest of the first half, came back and played much of the second half, but that consisted of handing the ball off and stiffly launching passes. You could tell he was afraid to test his leg at all and eventually he got pulled. The good news is that it didn't appear to be too serious. McKinley ended up winning with a last minute drive.

Guess I'll have to go back in a few weeks, let him get healthy again to see the real EGW.

Eric Glover Williams - McKinley's Electric Source

Although I have watched him grow and improve as a football player since his freshman year, watching Eric Glover Williams last Saturday was enjoyable. Not so much that he is one of the top talents in the Ohio Class of 2015, but that he is a threat to make a big play every time he touches the ball. When you see he start forward, anything can happen. Mr. Excitement when he touches the ball.
Contained most of the time last Saturday by a well disciplined GlenOak defense, he did show me some potential break- aways during the game. His yards lost plays negated any total yards for the night. Playing quarterback, he touches the ball every play. Although he is very durable and plays with a lot of energy, he must pick his spots when to run the ball. Senior RB Jarrod Smith takes some of the pressure away from Eric, because he is a very capable ball carrier as well.
I really think that one play shows what Eric is all about. His pass was intercepted by threw an one of GlenOak's top juniors. Kyle Hall. On the return, Eric was knocked down, got up chased Hall on caught him. Actually he caught him around the five yard line. The play may have covered 70 yards. I cannot remember the exact stats, but I do remember the effort of Glover Williams to stop a touch down. Bad ankle or not, he looked strong on that play.
