LB Nick Conner (Official Thread)

Oh. My. Hurry up and get him.

Not as big as Laurinaitis. I really like his resemblance to AJ Hawk, even his offensive play. Quick, smart and gutsy.

I actually meant to put that in my original post, agreed 100%. Seems cliche to compare a white LB from Ohio to Hawk but his playing style is just uncanny to Hawk. Every year I usually have one guy that I want to have an offer by the end of the spring and Conner is my guy. I would just be shocked if we don't have an offer out to Conner by the end of the spring. He is the exact type of player we have been missing in our defense recently.

I have no idea why we haven't offered yet but hopefully it is in the works. Local kid that could wind up being the best of any LB we take in the '15 class.

Exactly. This the cream of the crop for Ohio in any year. I know we are in on some big time OOS LBers but if you don't take a kid like this, might as well tear down that fence around Ohio.

PS: the other thing that makes Connor an interesting prospect is that he could be an excellent HB in Urban's system as well.

Please don't slow play him too long.

I think he could easily put on 15 pounds of muscle without losing speed and then he'll be ready to take on BiG blockers. My favorite player in the next class.

It's not stopping us from offering other kids or other schools from offering him is it? He'll get his offer but I'd hate for someone else to really impress him and get their hooks in him before then.
Can't recruit Ohio kids, let alone Columbus kids, the same way you recruit OOS kids. Plain and simple.

Does that mean we should not offer those kids earlier to see if we can get the out of state kids first? I'm not clear on what you mean there. Meaning, when we offer them we get them immediately closing the door on others possibly, not that we don't want them.

For lack of a better way of communicating this there are offers and there are OFFERS. Offers mean "hey we like you, why don't you come for a visit or camp in Columbus and we can go from there. But we are probably not ready to accept a commitment from you at this time". An OFFER means "we are ready to accept your commitment today...please be a Buckeye". Look at the difference between Trevion Thompson and Johnnie Dixon last year. Seemed to be that Thompson had an offer while Dixon had an OFFER. Even after Thompson visited it never seemed like the staff was pushing hard for a commitment. While they were working Dixon daily trying to build a relationship so he would eventually verbal to OSU.

With out-of-state kids, you can send out "offers" with little concern they will take you up on the offer immediately because they probably have never seen the campus little alone sat down with the staff to talk about their future as a Buckeye. They probably haven't dreamed of being a Buckeye all their lives. Half the kids who say they have been offered by OSU couldn't commit tomorrow if they wanted. OSU knows with out-of-state kids they are less likely to pull the trigger immediately. With in-state kids, you have to be very clear whether a kid has been offered or not. Because if you send out an offer it is most likely going to be interpreted as an OFFER and you better be ready to accept that kid's verbal. If not, you could run into an ugly mess...an in-state kid tries to verbal to his home state school only to be told "sorry, we didn't really mean we were offering you to the point that you could accept that offer...we just meant we wanted you to come to camp so we could get a better look at you".

I'm not sure if that clears things up or just muddies the waters. Back to Nick. We can take this discussion to the 2015 OSU recruiting thread if we need to.

Perfect. That's what I was interpreting your meaning as. I get it.

I just thought that Nick was a guy who was definitely in the OFFERS camp considering. He certainly is a guy, imo, that Tressel would probably have already locked up. No knock either way here, just maybe a style difference and probably a recruiting strategy difference in our two head coaches.

I think you said it perfectly. Under JT, Nick would be a Buckeye already. Under UM, he still might be but it might take a little more a journey to get there.
