Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

A discussion in another thread gave me the idea for this, but it would be too far off-topic there.

In the past three seasons, both of these teams have lost 5 games. While looking at losses isn't the only way of comparing teams, it is a method that is being roundly ignored w.r.t. this match-up. Final ranks below are AP/USA Today.

Year__USC losses____final rank_||_OSU losses____final rank
2005____Texas____________1_____||____Texas___________1____
_______________________________||_____PSU____________3____
2006____OrSU___________21/22___||_____FLA____________1____
________UCLA____________NR_____||_________________________
2007___Stanford_________NR_____||_____LSU____________1____
________Oregon_________23/24___||_____ILL__________20/18__

While CC and his ilk constantly talk about how USC has a better record in Big Games, this is still the Jim Tressel that is 6-1 vs TSUN and won 4 straight bowl games (3 BCS) before 2006. No one else has lost to all three of the past national champions, because no one else has played all three of the past national champions.

And they ignore the data in the table above. JT has beaten who he was supposed to beat for the past 3 years with one (top-20) exception. No one, and I mean NO ONE, else can say that. Not even the "invincible" Pete Carroll.

Only teams that played in BCS bowls have beaten OSU in the past 3 years. No one, and I mean NO ONE, else can say that. Not even the "invincible" Pete Carroll.

Excellent points, Big Daddy! While it may be true that USC wins their big games, they are virtually guaranteed a big game every year since winning a piss poor conference puts them in the Rose Bowl. And PC has only played the actual Big Ten champs once, in 2003. I will say that all of the OSU bashing just makes me love Bucks even more. We don't need outsiders jumping on the Ohio State bandwagon! Ohio State football is for the people of Ohio and the OSU alums all over the world!

This probably belongs in another thread, but...

...my son is 5. Early on he was severely autistic, so even as recently as last football season, he was not able to really understand or appreciate football or the Buckeyes and I was not able to express it to him.

He is now largely recovered, and is even testing above age-level in several areas. He hasn't experienced a football season, not really; but I have been able to talk to him about the Buckeyes.

The other day, after watching a replay of the 97 Rose Bowl with me (Big Ten Network) he was overheard telling my wife "I want to be a Buckeye like daddy when I grow up".

The point: My son has never set foot in Ohio, and he is not yet an alumnus. But he is all Buckeye.

I agree, PC isnt invincible and our records are a self indication of how well both these teams have played over the past 5 years.

However, All 5 games that USC has lost have been extremely close and or competitive. Now i'm not making an excuse for losing to god damn Stanford or UCLA - BUT they can say that they don't lose by 2-4TD's.

Great story, DBB, and one that deserves to be on any thread. I guess I should have been a little more inclusive, anyone who truly loves the Buckeyes in their heart makes the Nation stronger. People who just root for whoever's popular can fill their closets with USC, UT, LSU, FLA, and UGA gear.

methomps, ya oughta take DBB's hint and enjoy Sept. 13th with the Buckeye Nation at Orange County's Dave & Busters at Irvine's Spectrum. Heck, you can even buy some scholly raffle tickets that enable our local Bucks:wink2: to send SoCal students to Ohio State! Additional bennies: you can learn the Buckeye Battle Cry, and, among true fanatics, watch TBDBITL half-time show with the famous "I-dot."

I mean, it would break up one of those lazy surf, sun, girl-watching, pizza & beer guzzling, wasteful fall days, and you could be back in Redondo for that special midnight rendevous around the fire ring.

You might want to note that USC's Big wins often, too often in my opinion, come in LA. Home cookin' and talent will do wonders for your overall record.
