A 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive linemen from Fitch holds Cory Linsley, J.T. Moore and John Simon in the highest regard. Now, young Buckeye fans in Northeast Ohio will practice to become the next Billy Price. Bound for Ohio State, Price knows the responsibility he takes on playing for one of the most passionate universities in the country. He?s already lived it his entire life.

?In Youngstown, we?re known for hard work,? Price said. ?There is a lot of hometown pride for me to carry down to Columbus.?

Price was offered by some other top Division I programs, like Notre Dame, Michigan and West Virginia, but the big city atmosphere with a close-knit community really hit home.

?They want to bring the families in to be a part of the program,? Price said. ?It?s what Coach [Phil] Annarella preached and it?s exactly what Coach [Urban] Meyer is going to do.?

He had over 40 tackles in his senior season and anchored a line that averaged nearly 300 yards per game. The Falcons fell to defending champion St. Ignatius, 35-26, in the first round of the playoffs.

?We definitely put an impact on those guys,? Price said.

He?ll begin practice for spring track in January.

?T.J. Koniowsky is phenomenal,? Price said. ?He?s an animal in the weight room and he?s going to keep pushing me. Coach [Mickey] Marotti at OSU will push me until I can?t go any more. That?s what football is all about.?

The comparisons are inevitable.

It's something the 6-foot-4, 305-pound Austintown Fitch High School senior defensive lineman Billy Price relishes as he heads down to Ohio State University in the fall to play football for the Buckeyes.

The side-by-side comparison to former Cardinal Mooney High School standout John Simon, who terrorized opposing quarterbacks with his hard-charging bull rushes, is something Price expected. Simon is 6-2, 256 and plays more of a hybrid linebacker/defensive end position, but the two share a similar outlook on the game.

"When I've talked to him, I've talked to him down at campus a few times," said Price, who signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday at Fitch High School. "He said, 'Grind. It's college. You got to grind.' He's definitely set the ways in how they should be. I'm definitely model my game after him."

The comparison is something Price and Fitch coach Phil Annarella have discussed.

"I know Billy has a lot of respect for John Simon," Annarella said. "He and I talked about that a few times. Being from the area, I think that motivates him. It motivated him in the weight room. He knows he's not going to get by on natural ability. He's got to do the intangibles and the extra work needed to be successful. He's doing that right now in the track program. He'll probably get to the state track meet again in the shot and discus.

"He was a real joy to coach."

Price, the Northeast District’s Division I defensive player of the year, expressed relief once his signature was on his letter-of-intent form.

“It’s time,” said the Falcon senior who said he will be defensive nose tackle at Ohio State. “I knew where home was so this is a big sigh of relief.

“It’s the stamp on how it should be,” Price said. “If you grow up in Ohio, you should be an Ohio State Buckeye. It’s a dream come true. I’m proud to say another Youngstown individual [is going] to Ohio State.”

Like Smith, Price said he was still contacted by coaches even after he made his verbal commitment to Ohio State.

“It eased off a little bit but [non-Big Ten] schools contacted me,” Price said.

“Recruiting doesn’t stop [if] you are verbally committed — people are still going to try and come get you.”

Price never wavered.

“Once you go [to Columbus] and see the facilities, you have an expectation,” Price said. “If you go anywhere else and that expectation is not reached, it’s ... you see the best and you want to be the best. So to be in another facility that wasn’t adequate enough, it kind of shows.”

Price is aware that his dream comes with extra attention.

“To be a Buckeye, it’s a whole other responsibility,” said Price who will major in business. “You’ve got make sure you represent the community with the utmost honor.

“You’re the center of attention for Ohio, you’re the icon for the state of Ohio nationwide,” Price said.

“You’ve got little kids looking up at us and we’ve got to make sure we set the example.”

Falcons? Price second in discus

Only one athlete at Austintown Fitch?s Division I district has ever thrown the discus farther than what Falcon senior Billy Price threw on Wednesday.

Problem was, it came on the same day.

Price uncorked a season-best throw of 190 feet, 3 inches to place second behind Marlington senior Anthony Wilks (190-7). Both throws crushed the previous district mark of 182-5, set by Boardman?s Corey Linsley in 2009.

Another week on their home turf brought more success for the Austintown Fitch track and field team.

With the Division I Northeast Ohio Regional meet once again held at Fitch Falcon Stadium, three Falcon athletes earned spots in next week?s state track and field finals on The Ohio State University campus.

Billy Price?s discus throw of 187 feet, 11 inches sent the Fitch senior to the top of the medal stand.

After a second place finish in last year?s Regional finals and seventh place finish at the state meet, Price had some extra incentive this time around despite stiff competition from the likes of Marlington?s Anthony Wilks.

?I was really nervous for today,? said Price, an Ohio State football signee who will report to campus June 10. ?These guys came out of nowhere and it all depends on who?s going to show up on that day.

?For the first throw, you always want to make sure you?re in the finals and then once you get into the finals, the door?s open and just go get it. My first throw was a safe throw, 174 (feet), to get into the finals and as it progressively went on, my next two throws were a little off. I had to change a few things. Once finals came, with those additional three throws I got that fixed and let it fly a little bit.?

Price will compete in Friday?s shot put event as well, hoping to cap off a celebrated high school career with another victory in his last meet at home.

?It?s anxiousness,? he said. ?I?m ready for that next step, but you?ve got to savor the moment as it is now and don?t take anything for granted. It?s go time until that final throw.

?The state (meet) is phenomenal. I?ve been down there the past three years and it?s a phenomenal weekend.?

OSU Bound Billy Price - Football and Track Guy
As I congratulated Austintown Fitch two sport star Billy Price, we both agreed that "it has been a long time." First saw Billy his sophomore year playing OL/DE for Fitch. Remember that he ran well, but, at the time, thought that he was alittle over-rated by the internet media. Liked him better his junior year. Also was impressed with his power at the State Track Meet last year. This year he was a dominating player in the game that I saw him play.
All Billy wants to hear is defense. All along, I have looked at him as a very good offensive center prospect. Listed 6'2-290, but he may be bigger than that now. Excellent explosion. Strong hands. Like his quick first step. Not as tall as most linemen, but he has such leverage. Maybe a 3-tech guy on the DL, but still like him snapping the ball.
Last night he came to the Regional track meet with a best 190 feet discus throw. Last night, he tossed the discus 187 feet. That throw was in the finals. Friday night, he brings a 57'7 shot put toss to the Regionals. Strong back, but quickness and explosion is just as impressive to me. Looking forward to watching him the OHSAA State Track Meet next weekend.
As I watched him last night, I was really impressed with the way he handled himself around the ring. No tough guy swagger. No fist pumping. In fact, he talked with his number one challenger. Communicated well with the officials. He just did his thing, with no show. After the event, he made time to talk with people.
Billy committed to Ohio State University and will be reporting this summer. Do not know for sure where O-State football coaches see him playing. If he wants to play defense, I am sure that he will get his chance. At the end of the day, he very well could be lining up at center.
I will say Billy has been one of the tougher young men whom I have worked with for a while. Tremendous young man, but we were never on the same page. Quite possibly, he thought of me as a recruiting reporter. Or, he may not have agreed with my thoughts about the center position. Whatever the case, I have watched him grow over the last three years into a very good college prospect.
"It has been a long time,"and I have tremendous respect for what he has done as an athlete. His character speaks for itself.

Daniels, Price ready for Big Ten

After three trips to the state track meet, Fitch's Billy Price is familiar, comfortable and excited about Columbus.

He's about to make it his home for the next four years.

The Ohio State football commit will spend this weekend in the capital city, make a quick return home to Austintown, then it's back to Columbus next weekend for good. A camp for freshman begins on June 10.

"It'll be sad," Price said. "I have tons of family and friends here who I'm going to miss. This has been my life for the past 18 years and now it's on to something new."

Rivals.com rated the 6-foot-4, 280-pound Price as teh ninth-best prospect in the state and the 13th-best defensive tackle in the country.

Fitch's Price closes career in style

COLUMBUS - Billy Price spent his last weekend as an Austintown Fitch athlete in the city where he will be going to school and playing football in the fall.

Before he could focus his complete attention on his future, the 6-foot-4 senior had business to attend to at the state track and field meet, where he competed in the Division I shot put and discus on Saturday outside of Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

As if to remind him of the competitive nature he will see in the Ohio State football program, Price fell to St. Edward's Aaron Zadella in both events, finishing fourth in the shot put and second in the discus.

Despite being a competitor, Price said Zadella was on a roll in both events, and there's nothing that he could have done about it. It also helps the sting of losing go away when the other guy will don the scarlet and gray like Price is.

"Aaron is a great kid," Price said. "He's going to Ohio State for throwing. He's got throwing and I've got football. To fall behind the state champion in the shot put and the state champion in the discus throw and to fall behind in the indoor weight throw, I'm fine with it. I'm OK with it."

Price's runner-up clinching throw in the discus travelled 184 feet, 4 inches, and it came in his third heave in the final heat. He almost didn't make it to the finals, however, fouling on his first two throws. He also came dangerously close to fouling on his final throw in the preliminary flight, but he managed to qualify in second, a spot he held on to.

A similar situation occurred in the shot put, where only one of his throws was counted. He threw 59-5.25, better than his regional qualifying throw.

Zadella won the discus in 196-6 and went 61-4.5 in the shot put.

"It felt good," Price said. "To end the year and my track career at Austintown Fitch on a good note, I think everything went well today."

With this being his third time competing at the state track and field, Price said he feels comfortable competing in the city. Because of his comfort level and the way the citizens treat Buckeye football, Price said he's going to enjoy moving to Columbus.

"The environment in the city itself, it's just crazy," Price said. "The amount of people who love their football here in Columbus is fantastic. That's really going to drive you, keep you motivated when the season drags on a little bit.

"So, I think it's going to be nice down here."

Fitch senior Billy Price found a theme in the last day of his throwing career.

?Make things exciting,? he said, ?then on the last throw save yourself.?

Maybe ?exciting? isn?t the right term. ?Suspenseful,? maybe. Or ?stomach-churning.?

In both the shot put and the discus, Price fouled the first two throws in the opening flight, only to save himself with the third attempt to make the finals. While it wasn?t a recipe for greatness, it was good enough for a runner-up finish in the discus and a fourth in the shot at Saturday?s Division I state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

?The first two throws, I was trying to chase the best, I guess, and I was working too hard and not focusing on the essentials,? said Price, who will play football at Ohio State next season.

Price?s coach, T.J. Koniowsky, has a theory that Price throws better when he?s a little distracted, which proved true in the discus. After fouling his second throw, Price?s focus was interrupted by an elderly man suffering from heat exhaustion.

?He had throw up on his shirt and I was straight up like, ?I don?t even care about the competition right now; I just want to make sure he?s OK,?? said Price, who gave up his seat in the tent so the man could get treatment in the shade. ?It kind of relaxed me and got my mind focused on what it needed to be.?

Price threw a 183-footer on his third attempt, then topped it with a 184-4 on the last throw in the finals to place second behind Lakewood St. Edward?s Aaron Zedella, an OSU track recruit.

?I?m glad I ended what I started,? said Price, who struggled at last year?s state meet and briefly considered dropping track after football season. ?You open a door, you make sure you close it on the way out.?
