Linsley Ready To Start Shoving People Around


What do you do with a high school football player who is 6-4 and 275 pounds, nimble for his size and able bench press more than 400 pounds?

You put him in the trenches on offense and defense and watch him move people all day, of course.

That is what Youngstown (Ohio) Boardman lineman Corey Linsley brings with him to the 2009 signing class for the Ohio State football program ? brute strength combined with surprising athleticism.

?I think I?m a pretty good athlete,? he told Bucknuts.com last week soon after becoming one of 25 prep student-athletes to sign a national letter-of-intent with Ohio State. ?My coaches always tell me what separates me from a lot of the other guys is my footwork and my athleticism.

"I think combining that with the training we?re going to get at the next level and the fact that I?m already very strong ? growing up in Youngstown and lifting weights is just a habit ? I think all that combined will allow me to transition a lot easier. At Ohio State being already athletic and already strong, I think it?s going to be a lot easier for me than it is for a lot of other guys.?

OSU head coach Jim Tressel certainly believes Linsley has a chance to excel. On national signing day Feb. 4 he described the youngster as ?very powerful? and added that Linsley has ?excellent feet.? He also pointed out that Linsley had just logged a toss of 58-6 in the shot put during a high school indoor track and field meet.

Track and field and football go hand in hand at Ohio State.

As winter arises, the season on the gridiron winds down. By the time the sun melts the snow and flowers begin to blossom, athletes set down their helmets and pads for shorts and running shoes.

Offensive line recruit Corey Linsley fits this recent trend of multi-sport athletes to don scarlet and gray.

He will arrive in Columbus trying to earn time between the hash marks at Ohio Stadium in the fall. But the Youngstown native will also focus on his future in track and field come spring.

Linsley was the regional and league champion in shot put at Boardman High School, with a throw exceeding 58 feet.

Having athletes compete in multiple sports hasn't bothered football coach Jim Tressel, said Kevin Noon, publisher for buckeyegrove.com.
