Tackling the job

Rookie seventh-round pick Kirk Barton has been working at both tackle positions and is ready for his role Sunday. He'll be one play away from being on the field and is preparing as much as he can by staying late after practice each day.

''I feel good,'' he said. ''I know the scheme well. I just have to keep getting better. You don't want to let anyone else down if you're out there, so you just work as hard as you can.''

The Fred Miller front has been silent this week. The Bears offered him a one-year deal to return as the backup tackle. Now it looks like Barton will man the job, at least for Week 1.

''If he gets called on, he's going to go out there and compete his butt off,'' line coach Harry Hiestand said. ''We don't have any question about that.''

Believing in Barton: The Bears? third offensive tackle behind John St. Clair and John Tait, rookie seventh-round pick Kirk Barton has yet to appear in a regular season game. But offensive line coach Harry Hiestand is confident in the former Ohio State standout.

?He works hard and he?s a great kid,? Hiestand said. ?If he gets called on, he?s going to go out there and compete his butt off. We don?t have any question about that.

?We know what we have in Kirk. We know he is a young, inexperienced player. But we also know how important it is to him and how determined a guy he is. Whatever he?s got, the best he?s got is what he will give us and that?s all we can ask for.?

So Fred Miller is a "tackler" huh? Does he not have a position, or do they just say, "Hey Fred, go tackle somebody, that's it."

(yes, I know he is an OT, just though it was funny they noted him as a tackler instead.)

Harsh and I think I could be an NFL slave for that kind of money.... Just say'n....lol

When people compare pro sports to slavery, they minimize the actual harshness and terribleness that slavery was. Not just the slavery that happened in this country but throughout the world.

Anyway, Barton is an NFL type talent I believe and he will find a place to play for sure.

Miami Dolphins pick up Perry's Kirk Barton
Thursday, September 11, 2008

Kirk Barton didn't wait long to find a new job ? and a familiar face.

Less than 48 hours after the Chicago Bears released the Perry High School and Ohio State graduate, the Miami Dolphins signed Barton off the waiver wire. Barton joins former Massillon Tiger Andy Alleman, who was claimed by Miami earlier this week after he was released by New Orleans.

Barton was active and played in Chicago's win Sunday over the Colts, but the Bears cut Barton loose when they signed veteran Fred Miller out of retirement.

"It is a great opportunity," Barton said. "I think Miami is trying to acquire all the Stark County linemen they can."
