Broncos claim OL Kirk Barton off waivers
Posted Wed Jul 7th by Jon

A day after being waived by the Detroit Lions, offensive lineman Kirk Barton found himself claimed off waivers by the Broncos.

A big boy, 6-6, 300 pounds, Barton was drafted in the last round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The former Ohio State Buckeye was selected by the Bears. Although he?s been on the rosters of the 49ers, Dolphins, Bengals, Lions, and Bears, he?s only played in one game.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels loves competition (that has become obvious), however, that?s probably not the sole reason for the signing. The Broncos O-line is a little shaky heading into Training Camp, with Ryan Harris and Ryan Clady coming off injuries, and a rookie probably handling the center duties. Adding some more depth was a solid move, even if he only contributes in some camp practices.

Raised in Naples, Florida, Barton was born on November 4, 1984.

Panthers Claim OT Kirk Barton Off Waivers

According to a league source, the Carolina Panthers have claimed offensive tackle Kirk Barton off waivers.

The well-traveled Barton was waived by the Denver Broncos on Monday.

Barton appeared in one game for the Chicago Bears, who selected him in the seventh-round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. Barton has also had stints with the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Detroit Lions.

Panthers starting tackles Jordan Gross (ankle) and Jeff Otah (knee, PUP) are banged up. Offensive lineman Jason Capizzi has been waived.

Bounced around 6 teams? big deal! I don't understand why he wouldn't give it a shot in Carolina.

I'm not in his position and I don't know what he's really thinking, but sounds like he gave it 85% effort. not 100, not 110.

He must have some other kind of career planned.

I heard him on 97.1 the other day, and he said he was almost certain that he would have been released in the final round of cuts, which was in 10 days. He said that he had just driven 19 hours back from Denver when he got the news about Carolina, and apparently didn't feel it was worth moving all of his stuff (again) for that short of a time.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I doubt any of us really know what he has gone through. The physical toll an NFL training camp takes on someone isn't something I know enough about to accuse someone of only giving 85%. I imagine those guys, especially linemen, get beaten to hell day in and day out, and if he didn't want to go through 10 more days of it, more power to him. Not to mention, Kirk seems like a pretty confident person, and to be told by 5 teams in 2 years that he couldn't cut it in the NFL probably didn't make matters any easier.

He must have some other kind of career planned.

He said he is enrolling in graduate courses at OSU and said he's going to be working for the school in some capacity. I don't know if it will be for the football program or in a different area.

As a military member (wife too), bouncing from base to base, country to country on constant TDY's and deployments is hell on a family. So, if he has someone special in his life that he might be looking to as settling down with, it makes a difference in future plans.

Maybe the guy is just looking for something concrete in his job, not having to hope for a paycheck next week - next month - next year. He's college educated and well respected in Columbus, he will be just fine.

Sunday Special: Barton makes smart decision

It came as no real big surprise when Kirk Barton was released by Denver last week. Barton?s practice repetitions were limited. His time in preseason games was laughable.

Why did Denver sign him in the first place?

Good question.

But NFL teams see something in Barton, a Perry High School graduate. None of them, however, ever saw enough to take a real chance on him. Over the last two years, Barton has been through nine transactions. His best chance to stick was in Detroit. Alas, the Lions cut him ... twice.

Last week when Denver released him, the Carolina Panthers were there within 24 hours to claim Barton. Carolina?s offensive line has been hit with injuries and has underperformed in the offseason.

But Barton didn?t report.

He didn?t want to talk much about his future, other than to say he is contemplating retirement.

?I?m 90 percent sure I?m done,? Barton said.

Why wouldn?t he report to Carolina? Why not continue to chase this dream? Barton is 25 years old. He?s married and has a beautiful wife and home in Columbus. He hasn?t seen much of either the last two years as he lived out of a hotel most of this year alone.

Think about his odds of making it in Carolina. He would have had one quarter of one preseason game and four days in practice to convince the coaching staff to keep him around.

That?s not a lot of time to convince men who had 95 percent of their roster made up a month ago, even if the ink was dried on paper then. Realistically, Barton would have been in the same position he?s in now in 10 days.

?Right now, I?m enrolling in graduate school,? Barton said. ?The program I want doesn?t start until the summer, though. It?s a master?s in education in one year.?

Tough decision, indeed. Barton is a heady player who will do well in grad school. Don?t be surprised to see him coaching in the future if, indeed, his playing days are done.

?I can tell you I?m a lot happier now than I was a week ago,? Barton said.

BARTON A BUCKEYE
Former Ohio State captain and offensive lineman Kirk Barton is back on the sideline wearing a uniform ... a coaching uniform. Barton, who was released by the Broncos recently and then claimed by the Panthers, said last week he is likely to retire from the NFL and enter graduate school. An Ohio State spokesperson said Barton was volunteering with the team. Former players have done similar duties in the past. Mike Doss was a volunteer assistant last year. Barton said last week he planned to go to graduate school for education.
