Lineman with strong wrestling background probably will remain at guard

Offensive guard Pat Elflein wasted no time in committing to Ohio State, becoming the 11th member of the 2012 class 14 months ago as the crown jewel of Luke Fickell's commits.

As a result, he became the second first-team Division I All-Ohioan to join the Buckeyes' recruiting class -- Pickerington Central's Jacoby Boren was the other.

Ranked the 26th-best guard in the nation by ESPN, Elflein was a four-year letterman on the gridiron and earned 12 varsity letters at Pickerington North.

Elflein's wrestling background -- he was the Ohio Capital Conference Wrestler of the Year after going undefeated in the regular season as a senior -- gives him the low center of gravity vital for his position.

In picking Ohio State, Elflein turned down offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Indiana, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, Purdue and Toledo.

Elflein was attractive to the Buckeyes for his run-blocking and explosion off the snap.

With the athleticism and footwork to play offensive tackle, he'll likely stay at guard.

His calling card is the ability to pull and trap, but his ability to get to the second level and pick up linebackers will be critical for Ohio State's future offensive line.

They are probably making a distinction between 'Fickell commits' and 'Meyer commits' (possibly 'Tressel commits' as well) although that still doesn't make much sense. They also might be using 'crown jewel' to mean the last commitment for Fickell although that would still be wrong on multiple levels as that is not the accepted meaning of "crown jewel" and three players committed after Elflein but before Meyer was announced as head coach on November 28.

What do you think ESPN reporters get paid for, FACTS and EVIDENTS?

Meyer even mentioned the idea of Pat Elflein coming out of nowhere. If he turns out to be the fifth best offensive lineman, they could put him at guard and slide Andrew Norwell or Marcus Hall out to tackle. I still don?t see that happening, but this staff isn?t afraid to hurt anyone?s feelings.

From an O-Zone article. Does this mean Elflein beat out Jacoby Boren for the center spot? There is no word on Boren in that article.

edit: The article does say later that Boren was passed by Elflein today. My bad.

One thing that both Boren and Elfein bring to the table is an incredible toughness and nasty streak. These two guys could very well be playing next to each other next year at C and G.
