OL Reid Fragel (Official Thread)

Ohio State players finish Pro Day
Thirteen players from Ohio State's undefeated 2012 season worked out for NFL scouts this morning at OSU's Pro Day, and some Buckeyes appeared to have helped themselves.

There are no "official" statistics kept as each team records its own times.

Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins and offensive tackle Reid Fragel did only limited drills today after doing the full set at the combine.

Fragel said he wanted to showcase his pass-protection skills after working out with former Buckeye and NFL center LeCharles Bentley in Arizona.

Fragel lets combine numbers stand
March, 8, 2013
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The competitor in Reid Fragel wanted to improve his numbers, impressive as they were.

His advisers and the recent feedback from the Ohio State right tackle's trip to the NFL combine suggested he leave them alone.

Ultimately Fragel sided with the latter and played it safe on Friday morning at the Buckeyes' pro day, passing on the measured workouts, focusing all his energy on positional drills and letting the work he has already done for scouts speak for itself.

"After the combine, you just kind of took a step back and look at how you performed," Fragel said. "Whether you did what you thought you could do, if you could do better or not, it doesn't really matter. I personally think I could have done better than 33 reps on the bench, obviously. I consistently ran under 5 [seconds] when I was training, so it's just things like that that eat at you.

"Being a competitive guy, you want to go do better. But at the end of the day, it's now a business and you've got to keep healthy and stay out of some of those things."

Fragel resisted the temptation in front of representatives from 28 different organizations to give his workout totals a boost, but aside from putting up a couple more reps of 225 pounds on the bench or trimming a few tenths of a second off the 5.14 he posted in the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, there wasn't much more for him to prove.

Fragel remained on an opposite trajectory. The buzz around the 6-foot-8, 308-pound right tackle keeps rising with each passing workout. He has the athleticism of a former tight end and Popeye muscles ? his 33 bench-press repetitions of 225 pounds led offensive tackles at the combine. Fragel?s one season of experience on the line is glaring, but he flips that to say, "I have a lot less tread on my tires than a lot of these linemen, and I think that's a positive."

Fragel, the grandson of former Rossford basketball coach Joe Stalma, is one of the Buckeyes? top potential upper-round selections along with Hankins, and defensive end John Simon.

"There?s no doubt in my mind I can do it," he said. "By the end of the season, I was so confident in my game. I felt totally natural."

On Reid Fragel…

* Fragel said he learned a lot working with LeCharles Bentley out in Arizona to get ready for pro day.

* Fragel said he worked out with Alex Boone and Michael Brewster. Heavy emphasis on pass protection drills.

* Fragel couldn't have imagined his move to offensive tackle going any better than it has. Wishes he had one more year to hone his craft.

Reid Fragel/T: Look physically impressive and passed the eyeball test. Turned in a solid performance during position drills.

Players Whose Draft Stock is On the Rise:

FRAGEL.jpg

US PRESSWIRE
Ohio State OT Reid Fragel is in stance ready to block.

1. Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio State, Senior (6075, 308 and 5.13): A former tight end, Fragel made big strides as an offensive tackle in 2012 and is climbing up draft boards because of his potential. Few offensive tackle prospects in this year?s Draft possess Fragel?s height, long arms, feet and overall athleticism. Evaluators have been impressed with his ability to kick slide out to protect the corner while maintaining good base so that he can re-direct and adjust to different pass rush moves. While his draft stock is no doubt rising, the concern that has been voiced to us is that his playing strength needs to greatly improve. For a 300+ pounder he gets driven backwards by bull rushers and struggles to consistently get movement on in-line run blocks. The hope is that he can improve his strength, but teams are always concerned when a player is already 300+ pounds and played at a program, like Ohio State, that has an outstanding strength and conditioning program and still struggles with playing strength. Right now Fragel has moved up into fourth round consideration and could be a surprise late in the third round.

This is a pretty stupid statement.

There are very legitimate strength concerns for Reid, especially whether he can gain more weight given how lean he has always been. But arguing the above given that he switched to OT in his last 9 months of eligibility is pretty foolish.

Ohio State T Reid Fragel has six team visits scheduled, according to draft insider Tony Pauline.
Those six teams are: the Lions, Bears, Dolphins, Giants, Patriots, and Bengals. Pauline calls Fragel "possibly (the) most underrated RT moving toward (the) draft." Our own Josh Norris ranked Fragel as the No. 65 overall player last month. As long as the Buckeye stays more patient in his posture, he has the mean streak to be a starting caliber tackle. Apr 3

Ohio State's Reid Fragel (77) has played offensive tackle for only one year. USA Today Sports Images

One in a series of draft profiles of prospects who the Bengals could have an eye on in the NFL Draft. The Bengals will have 10 picks including two in the second, sixth and seventh rounds. We will also take a look at local prospects:

REID FRAGEL

Position: Offensive tackle

School: Ohio State

Height/weight: 6-7, 309 pounds

Projection: Fourth-sixth rounds

Combine stats/level of interest: Ran a 5.14 in the 40, had a 30-inch vertical jump and did 33 bench press reps. He is one of the prospects the Bengals have in for a visit.

Strengths: Switched from tight end to right tackle last season and had a solid season. He is a good run blocker who has solid technique.

Weaknesses: Late reaction on pass protection, especially in picking up blitzes. Needs to do a better job of finishing off blocks.

Ya know this might sound silly considering the history on this particular site regarding the bocking sleds, but it sounds like Fragel could use some hardcore sled work to improve his lower body strength and drive in his blocking. He already has the quick feet and strength/length in his upper body. Guarantee that it wouldnt hurt.

He probably just needs more than 1 year at the postion. He gained weight rapidly to switch positions. All indications are that it isn't a technique issue which is amazing considering usually guys are big and strong but struggle with technique. If the only knock on him is strength, I look at that as a positive considering he was a TE last year at this time.
