OL Rob Sims (official thread)

Rob Sims: 'I've got some wrongs I've got to right'

Rob Sims has just five weeks left on the original four-year contract he signed with the Seattle Seahawks, but the big left guard says there's unfinished business.

While Sims has been the team's best offensive lineman when healthy this year, he's largely been overlooked in a season of struggles on that unit.

Many fans think the best thing to do would be to blow up the entire line and start fresh next year, but that ignores the need to build continuity and consistency in a front five. The key is finding the right five and Sims would like to be part of that future.

"In the NFL, nobody stays on the same team (forever)," he said. "But I'm not ready to go. I still think I have some things to fix around here, mainly in the running game. I've got work to do. If I'm ever going to call myself an elite guard in this league, my time is now to start making that happen. So I'm not done here yet, I don't think."

The Seahawks will likely want to keep the 26-year-old Sims as he hits his prime. He's had injury problems, playing only one game last year before tearing his pectoral muscle and then missing two games earlier this season with a bum ankle.

But at 6-foot-3, 312 pounds, the former fourth-round pick out of Ohio State is one of the strongest men on the Seahawks and appears to be solidifying himself as a fixture at the position previously manned by that fellow named Steve Hutchinson.

And, yes, Sims is aware of the sizable footprints. He was drafted by Seattle a month after Hutchinson signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He played the same position. He knows the story.

It's part of the reason he feels there's unfinished business in Seattle, just like many of his maligned line mates.

"We all have the same feeling," Sims said. "We all feel we've got something to show. I've had a chip on my shoulder since I got here. I've been in Steve Hutchinson's shadow since I got here. That's something I've had to deal with my whole career.

"He's part of the reason I push so hard. Obviously it's left a bad taste in people's mouth that he's not here. It's kind of hard being the other guard that is here when everybody keeps talking about the guy who isn't, especially when you think you're doing a pretty good job.

"So I've got some wrongs I've got to right."

Sims wants to be part of Seahawks' future

Rob Sims knows Sunday could be his last game for the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field, but the fourth-year offensive guard isn't thinking that way.

Rob SimsHe'll run out the tunnel to face the Tennessee Titans with a touch of uncertainty over his future, but isn't freaked out about his impending free agency even though the club is now without a general manager and the franchise faces a massive makeover after going 9-22 the past two years.

"I'm more of an optimist," Sims said this week as the Seahawks prepared for their season finale. "I don't think it's the last one.

"I feel like I've put enough out there to show everybody, even whoever the new GM is, that I want to be here. That I'm part of this team and I'm a company guy. Who knows? I might think about it a little bit, but I'm not ready to leave Qwest Field. And I don't think I will. But we'll see. It's not up to me anymore."

Sims' uncertainties include the current Collective Bargaining Agreement situation, with owners and players just beginning to wrangle out their labor differences.

It's possible that Sims, fellow lineman Chris Spencer and other NFL players in the final years of their deals will be restricted free agents in an uncapped salary situation.

Sims said he's in limbo, waiting for the offseason to see if Seattle offers a long-term deal. He leaves no doubt what outcome he's prefer.

"I think I've invested my whole being into being a Seahawk and hopefully they see that and know I want to be here," he said. "If not, it'll be a tornado and whirlwind and I'll figure it out later.

"But for right now, I have one more game to go out there and prove to them that I belong."

Sims is part of a line that has been through plenty of turmoil the past two seasons, between injuries and insults. He's a powerful man with a thick neck, enough so to withstand the criticism and want to remain a part of the rebuilding process.

Seahawks tender contracts to five free agents

The Seattle Seahawks tendered one-year contract offers to five of their restricted free agents on Thursday, a procedure that guarantees the club compensation if any of the players signs with another club.

The Seahawks initiated the right of first refusal on offensive linemen Chris Spencer and Rob Sims, defensive end Darryl Tapp and wide receiver Ben Obomanu.
the Seahawks could have used an "upgraded tender" on Sims, raising his draft-pick compensation as well as his salary level. Instead they left him with an original-round tender, which in his case could leave the door open to signing elsewhere since the compensation is only a fourth-round pick for a starting left guard.

Remember, however, that Seattle will be able to match any offer made to Sims or the other restricted free agents if it chooses.

Offer sheet could come quickly for Rob Sims
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2010

The Seattle Seahawks have tendered guard Rob Sims at the fourth-round level, allowing any interested team to sign him to an offer sheet and to give up a third-day draft pick (yes, there are three days now) if the Seahawks don't match.

The development is prompting considerable speculation that, once the RFA market gets rolling, Sims will be one of the first guys to experience plenty of attention.

Sims, a four-year veteran, started 16 games in 2007 and 14 in 2009. Obvious connections are in Cleveland, where former Seahawks coach "the Big Show" is now the oversized cheese, and in Chicago, where the guy who drafted Sims has been hired to rescue Jerry Angelo from a looming pink slip.

In capped years, the restricted free agents don't begin to get much attention until 10 days or two weeks have passed, during which the UFAs are the focus. This year, with so many more RFAs and, in turn, considerably fewer UFAs, the restricted guys could find themselves getting chased sooner than ever.

Rob Sims will be the next to go in Seattle
Posted by Mike Florio on March 16, 2010

The same source who tipped us off to the fact that Seahawks defensive end Darryl Tapp was being traded out of Seattle has given us another tip.

The next one to go is guard Rob Sims.

And this time we're beating Glazer to the punch.

Sims, a restricted free agent, is drawing strong interest from multiple teams. One of the teams is believed to be the Browns, who are now run by former Seattle coach Mike Holmgren.

Like Tapp, Sims is being held out of offseason workouts in anticipation of a deal. Unlike Tapp, Sims has not yet signed his RFA tender, and talks have not commenced with any specific team on a multi-year deal.

Sims has been tendered by the Seahawks at the fourth-round level. A four-year veteran, Sims started 14 games for Seattle in 2009.

So stay tuned. Something could happen soon; something apparently will happen at some point before the draft.

Mora breaks news that Rob Sims has been told to stay away from VMAC.

"Rob Sims is out of there, they've already told him. They aren't letting Rob Sims work out at the facility, so he's gone, he will not be a Seahawk next year. I talked to Rob last week and he told me that they (Seahawks) have given him word that they did not want him around the facility working out because they didn't want him to get injured."

BEARS: Seahawks may deal, but not for Brown
March 28, 2010
BY SEAN JENSEN [email protected]

The Bears have talked with the Seattle Seahawks about acquiring guard Rob Sims, a restricted free agent.

But contrary to a published report, the Seahawks aren't interested in trading Sims for defensive end Alex Brown, two sources close to the situation said.

The Bears are hoping to trade Brown, who is due to make $5 million in 2010 and will turn 31 this summer, and the Seahawks have a need for a pass rusher, especially after trading Darryl Tapp and losing Cory Redding in free agency.

But the Seahawks aren't interested in Brown at $5 million a season. They are thought to be more interested in a draft pick.

Meanwhile, the Bears only would need to give the Seahawks a fourth-round pick if they sign Sims to an offer sheet. Sims is big and athletic, which is what new Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice likes, and he has 34 NFL starts under his belt.

According to one source, Sims is deemed expendable because new Seahawks offensive line coach Alex Gibbs prefers to work with players with whom he's more familiar. But Sims, 26, has been a solid player for the Seahawks, especially given that he has had different offensive line coaches in each of his four NFL seasons.

Sims has started at left guard, which is where he likely would fit in for the Bears. That would allow Frank Omiyale, who started at that position for most of last season, to move to his more natural position of right tackle.

Sims played at Ohio State and was a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks in the 2006 draft.

With his status up in the air, the Seahawks have asked Sims not to participate in their offseason program. The Bears don't want Brown to take part in their offseason program, either.

From Ohio, drafted by current Browns management. Sounds like a good fit to me.
thinking the same thing but unfortunately from above:(
Brownie bits: The Browns still consider offensive line a high priority in the draft. The departure of Rex Hadnot and Hank Fraley in free agency leaves them without an experienced backup center behind Alex Mack. They do not have a strong interest in Seattle guard Rob Sims, a Macedonia native, who is a restricted free agent.

Lions mulling deal for Sims
Posted: March 31st, 2010

The Detroit Lions are strongly considering making a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for restricted free-agent guard Rob Sims, according to a league source

Sims is drawing interest from several teams, and could be signed to an offer sheet. He has a fourth-round tender. At this point, a return to Seattle seems unlikely.

Chicago is another team mulling Sims.
