PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Kosta Koufos, Ohio State (C, Denver Nuggets) "Being a one-and-done meant living the dream sooner. Being able to play in the NBA, going up against the best athletes in the world -- Kevin Garnett and Shaquille O'Neal and guys that you used to look up to in high school -- it's exciting. When you play with talent like that every day, your skills go to the next level. I would smile after every workout, thanking God for every opportunity He's given me."

Koufos' improvement a big plus for Nuggets

The Denver Post

Konstantine Demetrios Koufos is nine syllables and 7 feet of Greek gargantuan.

Kosta, as he goes by, was deemed a throw-in to the Carmelo Anthony trade in February, but it is possible Koufos will play some key minutes for the Nuggets this season. In Thursday's preseason game at Phoenix, Koufos scored 15 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks, showcasing his growth from even the past few months.

"He's confident, he's big, he had a great summer from the standpoint of his performance with the Greek team," Denver coach George Karl said Friday after the team's practice at the Pepsi Center. "Now it's, can he go on the game court and prove that his work has been worthwhile?

"Our front line, how and who plays, it's probably going to be dictated a lot by who's playing well. I can't guarantee anybody minutes, but I think they all could play."

Koufos will battle Chris Andersen, Al Harrington and Kenneth Faried for playing time off the Denver bench, but Karl has gushed about Koufos' growth.

"I played a big role for Greece and it was good for me, just playing in a different type of environment in Europe," said Koufos, who was born and raised in Ohio but has dual citizenship. "I did a lot of conditioning, lifting, work on my body ? and I feel great.

"I just want to play hard every possession. Run the floor hard, set good screens, rebound and block shots."

Kosta Koufos - F/C - DEN - Jan. 5

Kosta Koufos double-doubled with Nene (foot) out on Wednesday against the Kings, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with 11 rebounds, one steal, and five turnovers in 24 minutes.
Koufos may have produced more if the game hadn't gotten out of hand, but then again on most nights the Nuggets won't face such a poorly playing team. Nene's foot injury has raised one eyebrow over here as we await further details, and if news comes back bad for whatever reason Koufos could be an interesting pickup.

Nuggets' Koufos comes up big in win over Hornets

The Denver Post

NEW ORLEANS ? Two courtside fans tried to heckle him, but they didn't know how to pronounce his name.

Kosta Koufos is 7 feet of obscurity to most casual fans, but on Friday night in New Orleans, he was a game-changer.

Trailing 63-62 after three quarters, the Nuggets beat the Hornets 96-88, thanks to six points, four rebounds and three blocks from Koast-ah Koo-fuss.

"We get a wild-card win from a bench guy that, going into the game, I wasn't even expecting to play," Denver coach George Karl said.

The reserve big man averages 13.8 minutes per game, but Karl played him the entire fourth quarter ? and for the night, Koufos had a plus-minus rating of plus-19, best of any player in the game.

The Nuggets fed off his energy ? seen in shot swats, tip-ins, and simple sprinting up and down the floor.

"It was huge," Nuggets guard Ty Lawson said. "He was hitting the boards, hitting big shots. He's playing unbelievable basketball. We need more of that from him. We'll probably see more minutes from him."

Kosta Koufos: Kosta Koufos plays well in easy win
Kosta Koufos - F/C - DEN - Feb. 15

Kosta Koufos had nine points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks in Tuesday's easy win over the Suns.
Koufos has played well in the absence of Timofey Mozgov (and Nene) and is averaging seven points, seven boards, 1.4 steals and 2.0 blocks per game over his last five. Mozgov will be back in the near future from a sprained ankle, meaning Koufos' run is likely coming to an end

Plain Local School District Superintendant Brent May, left, presents former GlenOak Golden Eagles basketball player, now with the Denver Nuggets, Kosta Koufos, with a plaque retiring his No. 31. With Kosta is his mother Kathy Koufos, high school head coach Jack Greynolds Jr., and Father Dan Rogich, of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church

In the ceremony honoring Koufos, the 7-footer was greeted with several standing ovations. Three GlenOak community members spoke, including former coach Jack Greynolds, before Koufos took the microphone.

In a brief address, Koufos said having his jersey retired ?is a truly an honor and a blessing.? He also offered a message to the current GlenOak players.

?I hope this jersey is a reminder that if they work hard, they can go anywhere they want to go,? said Koufos, a former Ohio State Buckeye who is averaging just over five points and five rebounds a game with the Nuggets this season.

During the game, Koufos mingled with people from his old stomping grounds and helped with a group of young kids who performed a show of skills at halftime.

Giammarco enjoyed having the former high school All-American back.

?It?s always nice when you have someone of Kosta?s value with the success he?s had in high school, in college and the pros,? Giammarco said. ?He?s a role model to the kids and the community, and we love having him around.?

Kosta Koufos: Koufos could be in line for minutes for DEN
Kosta Koufos - F/C - DEN - Mar. 3 - 1:20 am et

Kosta Koufos scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting with seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two blocks in 21 minutes off the bench on Friday.
Koufos might have some short-term value if Timofey Mozgov's ankle injury is serious, so keep an eye on him if you need a big man. In that event, it's likely that Koufos, Kenneth Faried, and Chris Anderson (DNP-CD) all pick up the slack, with matchups and Anderson's health determining how much each guy plays.

Koufos update. Nuggets reserve center Kosta Koufos had scored nine, eight, eight and 10 points in the previous four games but is battling tendinitis in his knee and sat out Sunday at San Antonio. Denver coach George Karl spoke highly of Koufos' impact off the bench.

"Last year, I thought he should have played ? we picked him up in a stage of the season in which our veteran guys were still playing at a high level," Karl said. "I just think his work ethic is first class. And his result has been getting consistently a little bit better. And on the court lately, he's been solid. ... And in the NBA, solid big men make a lot of money."

This season, Koufos was given a three-year contract extension for a total of $9 million. He averages 5.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in 15.9 minutes.
