PG Shannon Scott (Long Island Nets - NBA G-League)

Shannon Scott

Also a McDonald's All-American, Scott may be the most college-ready player of his class. Noon and Helwagen both said they believe Scott has the best chance to see significant playing time his freshman year.

"I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we're going to see him and Aaron Craft out on the floor at the same time," Noon said.

The 6-foot-2 point guard from Alpharetta, Ga., won a state championship his junior year of high school and is known for his high basketball IQ. Though experts say he needs to extend his shooting range, Scott's diverse range of skills make him a threat to make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes.

"He's a great table setter and he can score as needed," Helwagen said. "Scott is just a dynamic guy. He and Craft, if they get it together, are going to be awesome together."

Thanks for the link. I'm excited to see Scott in Scarlet and Gray.

I do have to admit that the comments by Helwagen give me a chuckle when I think about comments made about Scott and Craft in Craft's thread last season.

After departing for Columbus, Oh. on June 18 to begin summer school and preseason conditioning with his new teammates, Scott ? the 2011 Neighbor Player of the Year ? is adjusting admirably to the grind of 7 a.m. workouts followed by daily classes.

He was well prepared.

Some 560 miles away from his family and friends in north Fulton, Scott is displaying the same sharp focus and maturity that benefited him tremendously as a prep standout at Milton.

?The stuff we did at Milton really helped me prepare for what we?re doing here,? said Scott, who recently impressed Ohio State coaches and teammates by bench-pressing 185 pounds and turning in the second fastest mile time on the team.

?All of the (other) freshman haven?t done this stuff before, so I?m ahead of where I should be right now,? Scott added.

Scott has made a habit of staying ahead of the curve.

The son of former University of North Carolina great and Olympic gold medalist Charlie Scott, Shannon accepted his God-given abilities and tirelessly pushed to refine them. His hard work earned Scott a spot on the 2011 McDonald?s High School All-American East squad and scholarship offers from more than a dozen colleges.

Now at home with the Buckeyes, Scott is learning from rising sophomore point guard Aaron Craft each day, looking to find his niche in Ohio State?s backcourt.

?We?ve played against each other a lot, and sometimes I?m in the backcourt with him, too,? said Scott. ?He?s a really good player, a good defender. He?s really helping me better my game and teaching me things I need to know.?

Sharing the backcourt with Craft at the two-guard position would be just fine with Scott.

?Any way I can help the team. Off the ball or on the ball, it doesn?t really matter to me,? said Scott.

I rewatched some of the McDonald's AA game, and Scott's quickness really stands out, even among the fastest players in his class. He isn't just fast in a footrace, he's fast with the ball, fast to loose balls, has quick hands, and has good anticipation skills that make him even more dangerous defensively when combined with his quickness. And he has a good basketball IQ. There were at least 3 plays where he should've gotten an assist but didn't because his teammate blew an open dunk, so he should've had 5 or 6 assists, and he had 5 steals in only 12 minutes. I don't see any way that Matta keeps this kid out of the rotation this season - he's just too smart and talented. He contributes offensively with his playmaking skills and defensively with his ability to get to steals, and his excellent speed helps him beat opponents to loose balls and be darn near unstoppable in the open court. Really excited about Shannon playing for OSU.

He looked smooth in the McDonald's! Reminds me a bit of Conley.

I think the Conley comparison is accurate but Scott is a bigger/longer guard than Conley but just as quick. Hell, he's almost the same size as Sibert but with Conley quicks. Very long arms.

Also has a better looking jumper than C. Jr.

If he turns out to be as good as Conley, I think we would all be happy with that. Let's just hope he takes the Buford school of education and not the DQ Cook school.

He may start at the 2. Buford could play a small 3 if Matta decides to use a 3 guard rotation this year. Fast break heaven!
Shannon at the #2. Personally, I don't think so. Craft will play the #2 and Shannon will play the #1 with Buford at the #3. I will admit that it might be hard to differentiate what position Scott and Craft will be playing when they are both on the floor together but Shannon will be the lead guard. I certainly hope that I misinterpreted your post.

2011 Basketball Preview: Shannon Scott
October 10, 2011, by Eric

Another of the new freshman coming to town is young Shannon Scott, a promising point guard out of Alpharetta, Georgia. * Others have him slated to be the ?next great Ohio State point guard?, but we?ll hold off on that anointment until we get a chance to see him play a game.* However, what news has come out about him has been nothing but promising.

Hometown: Alpharetta, Georgia
High School: Milton
Position: Guard (1)
Year: Freshman
Height: 6-2
Weight: 170

High School Awards:

- McDonald?s All American (2011)
- Jordan Brand All American (2011)
- Georgia Mr. Basketball (2011)
- Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year (2011)
- First-Team All State (2010)
- First-Team All District (2010)
- Male Athlete of the Year, NeighborNewspapers.com (2010)

Shannon Scott is a 4 star point guard out of Alpharetta Georgia.* He?s been ranked the #6 point guard in the country by Scout.com, and the 34th overall player by ESPNU.* As a junior, he lead Milton to a state championship in Georgia while averaging 14 points, 7 assists and 2.5 steals per game.* He also participated in the McDonald?s All-American game and picked up an incredible 5 steals in 12 minutes of playing time.

High School Film:

He?s #5 in the following video. About halfway through his team switches jersey colors from dark to white, though the gym stays the same. Just a heads up.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoDXK0yZdSY&feature=youtube_gdata_player]Shannon Scott - Milton (GA) 2011- The Next Great Ohio State Point Guard - YouTube[/ame]

Strengths:

Shannon Scott is as much a point guard as a basketball player can get.* He is the consummate floor general, the kind of player that can direct his team and deliver the ball to where it needs to go.* He has superb decision making skills and instincts, and is a true WD-40 guy ? the grease that keeps things moving smoothly.

He?s a solid defender, as his steals during the All-American game attest, which will allow him to see playing time for the Buckeyes early.* He?s also got a solid mid-range game, and can hit the pull-up jumper after blitzing down the floor at full speed.* His great basketball IQ allows him to really see the floor and he regularly maintains his dribble until he knows where he wants to go with the ball.

Weaknesses:

At times, Scott tends to get moving a little too quickly and will occasionally travel ? often due to something the defense is doing.* He also has a tendency to leave his feet when passing out of a lane drive, which will lead to charges.* He could also stand to work on his three point shot, but I imagine that won?t be a significant point of emphasis during the offseason.* His shooting is probably good enough for a distributer at the 1 position for now that they?ll spend time on his shot for next year.

Role for the Team:

There?s only one thing Shannon Scott does, and he does it with incredible skill.* The Buckeyes are going to have to work to find a way to get him on the court, and they will with his defensive abilities.* The current speculation, and what we already mentioned with Aaron Craft, is that Shannon Scott will start at the 1 with Craft occupying the 2.* This would allow two guards with superb ball handling and stealing skills to make life miserable for opposing teams in the early going.

It is possible, though unlikely, that Scott will come off the bench as the 6 man.* I think that is more likely from Jordan Sibert, as typically you want a guy to give you a spark off the bench either offensively or defensively.* Scott isn?t a ?spark? kind of guy.* He?s more of an even-keeled, calm kind of player that makes the offense run more smoothly.* He?s definitely the kind of guy you want on the court to set a tone for the game.

Either way, Mr. Scott will be joining the Buckeyes on the court this season one way or another.* He seems like the kind of player that could make a significant difference for this team, particularly filling in for some of the roles vacated by graduating players.

Shannon Scott has improved each game IMO after a shaky start. Scott had 6 assists and 3 steals in the victory over JSU but also had 5 TOs. Look for some decent PT tonight against N. Florida. The good thing with Scott is Matta can ease him along with Craft playing the majority of the meaningful minutes.

Scott had 2 PFs last night. Both were picked up late, once Ohio State had taken complete control of the game. Both calls were blocking fouls.

In both cases, in my opinion, Scott had demonstrated position and was drawing a charge. The first one was particularly egregious officiating. Scott sees the play developing (A drive off the right wing). He steps into position, has time to fold his arms, and he stands there for a good half second or more. SCU player hits him and Scott is rung up for a block. Ravenal, I think, blocked the shot. Not sure, but Rav could have fouled. In any event, the call was a block on Scott.

In the second, it was a closer call, but it appeared to me like Scott was in position well before the SCU player got there.

Any one else notice these?
