PG Shannon Scott (Long Island Nets - NBA G-League)

Well, for the Buckeyes sake, I hope so, DZ. It appeared to me that this past year he and Craft weren't working as cohesively as they should have been. Thought it was more on Scott than Craft, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Now it's Shannon's show, and he's the first banana, rather than the second. I don't really see anyone behind him, and no one to really give him the on court support that he gave Craft. So, as they say in football, he'll be on an 'island', and tOSU basketball will live or die with Shannon Scott's PG play this year. I hope that someone steps up to support him from the #2 (or #3) position, as the elite teams all have two pretty good guards out there at all times. Thad has a big challenge in front of him this year (I guess as always), and he'll put a creditable team on the floor. It'll be up to the players to produce. As always, I will be rooting for the Buckeyes to be great, and hope Shannon steps up his play for the 2014-15 year. Go Bucks!

Yeah, the Scott-Craft combo while very good on defense was kind of like tying an arm behind your back on offense. I think Scott did not perform very well at all offensively when Craft was out there with him, but when Craft was not in the game I think Scott played better. Scott just was not able to find a rhythm or get confidence shooting the ball when he was playing with Craft. Not sure exactly why Shannon struggled that much in those circumstances but it seems there's no chance of Scott playing off the ball this year so I feel really good about how he will play. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Shannon make one of the 3 all-Big Ten teams this upcoming season.

You're right it's going to be important to get a 2 guard who can shoot the ball out there and spread the floor. Hopefully between Kam and D'Angelo they will be up to the task.

Gotcha and agree. Thad's got some raw material, and it appears (to wit: Kentucky) that freshmen are ready, willing, and mostly very able (again: Kentucky) to produce on the floor. Actually would be better to put five newbies (freshmen) on the floor together, rather than integrating one or two into a fivesome with upper classmen.....as that would give the newbies the same training/teaching at the same time, versus having a couple of newbies learning where to be with some veterans who KNOW where they're supposed to be (one hopes!). Oh well, forgot the two you mentioned, DZ, and yeah, there's some talent there, so spot up and let 'er fly....Go Bucks!

in the article linked Shannon says that sometimes it was a little difficult playing with Craft last year

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Shannon Scott looks back at the last three year with fond memories, but he'll never admit to what is probably true.

Scott will never say that he didn't come to Ohio State to be the second option at point guard his first three years, that he sometimes felt limited in his game co-existing with Aaron Craft or that he may have reached his full potential sooner under different circumstances.

He prefers to stay short with it.

"It was hard sometimes," Scott said. Because this wasn't the plan.

A former four-star prospect of Alpheretta, Ga., Scott committed to Ohio State before anyone – maybe even Matta – knew that Craft was going to blossom into one of the best defenders in college basketball.

missed the Ohio State assist record by 1 last night

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Had Shannon Scott known that Anthony Lee's missed dunk cost him his spot in Ohio State's record book, maybe his initial reaction would've been different.

"He got it back later," Scott said of Lee's miss. "So I'm good with that. He's fine."

Then Scott was told that had Lee made the dunk he would have tied Aaron Craft's program record for most assists in a game with 15, a mark the former point guard set in the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

When Scott found out, his facial expression changed.

But maybe that was because Kam Williams and Amir Williams, the two other Buckeyes sitting at the podium after Ohio State's 74-63 win over Marquette on Tuesday evening, let out big, resounding "ooooo" sounds.

Scott is leading the nation in assists right now at 12.5 per game.

I think he was held back moreso than anyone else has been for OSU in recent years due to the style of play and other players at his position. The team last year especially had him playing out of position and in a style of offense that was not conducive to his success. With him being the unquestioned leader of the offense in the position where he is best and the fast pace offense they want to run, he should continue to get great opportunities to shine and I wouldn't be surprised to see him contend for All-Big Ten if he puts it all together like he is capable of.

OK, so far so good. Shannon is playing quite well, and his assist average points that out quite elegantly. Hope he keeps it up, as there are more scorers this year than last. I'm one that was from 'Missouri' on this, in other words - show me. He is playing well, and without Craft (who was the better player), Shannon is getting more of the young 'uns involved, and it the proof (so far) is in the results. I for one am impressed, didn't see this coming, this well or this early, but am happy to see it. Amir is playing with passion, and there are two or three freshmen on this team that will get some great minutes and have some points. It's all good, so Go Bucks!

New OSU record for Scott: more assists in one game. He gave 16, one more than Craft's previous mark (since 1986, there were no official assists stats before that).

He has now 41 in 3 games, leading the competition with an incredible average of 13.67 per game.

Historical record of more assists in one season is 248 (Conley in 07, a bit more than 6 per game), so it looks like Shannon will have a serious go at it if he stays healthy throughout the season.

Updated

Countdown to record after 8 games: 248-63= 185

I'm really interested to see how much Scott can keep this up throughout the year. I think he'll really blossom into the PG many thought he could be without having to share the duties with Craft and with more than one shooter on the floor that can knock down shots.

Shannon's vision and execution have been terrific, but we shouldn't forget that in order for the PG to get a dime, the pass recipient needs to knock down the shot. That's been an issue the past couple years, but appears to not be such a big problem this season.

Could be an exciting year.

Early in the season, Ohio State senior point guard Shannon Scott has been in quite the giving mood.

On Monday, the Big Ten decided to give back.

Scott was named the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after dishing out 30 assists in the Buckeyes' two wins last week over Marquette and Sacred Heart. He shares the honor with Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky.

Against the Golden Eagles, Scott finished with eight points and 14 assists. Against the Pioneers, however, Scott was even better. He dished out a school-record 16 assists and scored 11 points for his second-career double-double.

Scott currently has 41 assists through the first three games of the year and leads the country averaging 13.7 per game.

Like what Mike pointed out. For me, Scott has produced over and above what I anticipated. Given the 'friction' between Scott & Craft anyway (perceived by just me or not), Shannon has played the PG position quite well. I truly believe that this year's edition of the basketball Bucks has more weapons than last year, and more guys that are not afraid/willing to put it up. Makes the PG's responsibilities easier, think it was Mike (again) that said 'they gotta knock it down' when they launch. Again, I'm not intelligent to know whether it's the PG play or the play of the other four out there to know why the offense 'moves' better than last year, so maybe it's a combination of what's on the floor, and Scott's the one that stirs the drink. If he can get Amir to play passionately, then I'll cede Shannon the PG of the decade award. Go Bucks

I would like for him to do less shooting early in the clock and more distributing because we have so many other good shooters. It is not that I mind him shooting but I just do not want him shooting early in the clock when we are in a half-court set.
