PG Shannon Scott (Long Island Nets - NBA G-League)

He may not run them alot in practice but I'd love to see him run during games.

With Craft and Scott in there along with Smith, Thompson and even our bigs, we should be able to press or fast break a lot. When we are playing great defense and running, we can beat anyone in the country.

I will admit that I was a little down on Shannon last season and part of this season because I expected more from him. From everything that I read and heard about him coming out of high school, I guess I just expected more. Well, more has come and he is starting to show why he is such an acclaimed player coming out of high school.

Ohio State's Shannon Scott gives a late-season boost to Buckeyes' stalwart defense
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
on March 20, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott don't play on the same team in Ohio State's practices that often. The Buckeyes would rather pit the 6-2 junior and the 6-1 sophomore against each other.

"I think coach wants us to attack each other," Craft said. "Obviously, he's a great defender, and I do well sometimes."

But during Ohio State's eight-game winning streak -- the last five games of the regular season and the three games on the way to the Big Ten Tournament title that shoved the Buckeyes up to a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament -- the biggest change has been that pairing.

Craft and Scott are sharing the court a lot more. Together, they're attacking other teams.

When a reporter mentioned Tuesday in the midst of a question that Craft is considered the best defender in college basketball, Matta interrupted to say he is the best defender in college basketball. Even President Barack Obama mentioned Craft on ESPN when picking the Buckeyes to reach the Final Four, to which Craft jokingly replied, "He's got good taste, what can I say?"

Lately, Matta has been mentioning Scott in the same breath as Craft, which is about all you need to know.

"I give Shannon a lot of credit for being perceptive enough to understand, 'What do I have to do to help this team?'" Matta said. "He has really embraced that. You see the look in his eye that he really wants to be a good defender, and that helps our team."

Shannon's line against Iona shows 7 points, 7 boards and 10 dimes. Very strong line for Scott, who continues to improve game by game.

A friend who is a Tarheel fan watched Shannon play great D against Wisconsin and said, "He didn't learn that defense from his father." Charlie Scott was a great player, but obviously was known mostly for offense. :)

4. Shannon Scott got lucky his technical foul didn't help end the Buckeyes' season. The mild-mannered sophomore made a great first-half play on a backcourt steal that led to a layup and a foul. But then he spun the ball at the ISU player who fouled him and was called for a taunting technical.

The layup put Ohio State ahead 14-9, but then two Iowa State free throws made it 14-11 and then Scott missed free throw. The technical was also his first foul, and then Scott wound up on the bench with a second foul with 10:28 left in the half, when the Buckeyes needed him.

“I made a mistake. I shouldn't be doing stuff like that,” Scott said. “But I got caught up in the moment. I can't be making dumb plays like that. I'll learn from it.”

The most impressive player during the one-hour window of practice was Shannon Scott. The junior point guard is the fastest player on the team and he became known for his defense a year ago, but he seems to have really developed the offensive part of his game. Not only was he knocking down jumpers consistently, he was also beating defenders off the dribble and taking it to the rim.
So the question has to be asked: Will Matta stick with Smith in the starting lineup, or is it possible that Scott and Craft will be in the starting lineup as this team’s guards?

Well, I see the dilemma as Scott versus Ross as Matta does not remove guys from the starting lineup after they've been there already. A starting lineup of Scott-Craft-Smith-Thompson-Amir might be workable. Smith will start no doubt.

I guess I was wrong about Matta not bringing established starters off the bench, as to this point he's done just that with Thompson to get both his presumed leading scorer in Ross (who to be sure is a better fit at the 4 than Thompson) and perhaps best player in Scott on the court. Shannon definitely was a deserving starter today against Morgan State, and is perhaps the most improved player on the team this year. Scott is going to have a really great year if he keeps up this level of play.
