QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

OHIO STATE'S J.T. BARRETT PLAYS NEW ROLE IN WIN OVER MARYLAND; WILL IT STICK MOVING FORWARD?

61251_h.jpg,qitok=H3c48h6u.pagespeed.ce.MgAoqvp11K.jpg

Just seconds before Ohio State took the field Saturday against Maryland, J.T. Barrett put his helmet on and started throwing some passes on the sideline to a teammate. Directly after that, the Buckeyes’ redshirt sophomore quarterback dapped up head coach Urban Meyer.

Barrett didn’t look like someone who had spent the first five games of the season as Ohio State’s backup signal caller. In fact, he looked like someone who knew he was going to play significant snaps against the Terrapins.

That turned out to be exactly the case, as Barrett trotted out onto the field as soon as the Buckeyes reached Maryland’s 25-yard line in the first quarter. Six plays later, Ohio State found itself in the end zone.

“J.T. is just a very good player,” Meyer said following the 49-28 win over the Terrapins. “He provided an obvious spark for us in there.”

Great day for JT!!! Gave the Offense a spark in the red zone. Hope this continues throughout the rest of the season.
My guess is unless cardale plays awesome jt will slowly take over the starting job. He is currently taking over at about the 25. I bet that will soon be the 30. Then when we have a drive that starts inside the 50 he starts. Then in 3-4 weeks he is starting most of the drives. Just a hunch. Unless cardale moves the ball well. I just hate this big play stuff. Its fun and feels great, but it killed our defense. I prefer ball control and slowly moving down field, wearing out their defense and keeping ours on the sideline. Then when they are worn down and tired get cardale out there to take the top off.

Well Cardale played pretty awesome. 75% completion percentage for 291 yards and 2TD's

16 Jump Street: J.T. Barrett's Metamorphosis Into Tim Tebow Nearly Complete

15-10-17-FB-1318-DH.jpg

It was a couple of weeks ago when the subject came up regarding the proposition of J.T. Barrett as a red zone specialist for the Buckeyes, much like Tim Tebow was for Urban Meyer at Florida as a freshman in 2006.

It was a legitimate thought because the Buckeyes had only converted 6 of 16 red zone opportunities into touchdowns through their first five games, and the effectiveness of a running threat down in the red zone is something that always stresses a defense. Without that running threat in there, a defense has less to worry about.

Since that running threat has been added, however, the Buckeyes are now 12 for 12 in converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns. That's not all simply J.T. Barrett, but the impact is clear.

So with the plan in place to continue this course, the next step in the full-blown conversion to the kind of red zone ace that Tebow was in 2006 was, of course, the implementation of the jump pass inside the 5-yard line.

And with just over six minutes to play in the game, Barrett took a snap at Penn State's 5-yard line, ran towards the line of scrimmage, and then jumped up to get a look over the line of scrimmage and tossed the ball to a wide open Braxton Miller in the end zone.

"Yeah, it was good, Barrett said after the game. "We knew that they were going to bite on that pretty hard so I just laid it up. Braxton did a good job of getting open versus man."

It was a brilliant play and perfectly effective, but whose idea was it?

"Who do you think?" offensive coordinator Ed Warinner said laughing after the game. "That’s Coach Meyer’s play."

J.T. Barrett was the Right Option to Beat Penn State

BarrettTDLunge.jpg

Watching the end of Ohio State’s 38-10 win over Penn State felt like the return to J.T. Barrett as the starting quarterback.

In a fourth quarter where Barrett led the Buckeyes on two full touchdown drives after taking over behind center late in the third, the chants of “J.T. J.T.” start from the south stands of Ohio Stadium and carried through all 108,423 fans in attendance.

Those watching from the stands weren’t the only ones who saw Barrett as the deciding factor in what was still a close game in the third quarter.

“I think Barrett makes a difference for them, there’s no doubt about that,” Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin said after the game.

“There’s no doubt that was different.”

Different is the key word with Barrett.

Before revealing a starting quarterback in the season opener against Virginia Tech, OSU head coach Urban Meyer said both players would play. Meyer didn’t know how or why, but said both guy had to be ready each week to help the team win.

On Saturday night, that guy was Barrett.

“I thought we actually were playing pretty good when it was a traditional drop back quarterback,” Franklin said.

“Now Barrett comes in and the speed and the athleticism that he has not only to beat you with his arm but also to beat you with his legs.”

THE KEY TO J.T. BARRETT'S RESURGENCE IN OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE? A SHIFT IN MINDSET

61774_h.jpg,qitok=zliqgH1I.pagespeed.ce.IqAUiVTZHY.jpg

J.T. Barrett isn't one to show much emotion.

Even when he scores touchdowns, a fist pump and hug with one of his offensive linemen is usually the most excitement the Ohio State quarterback shows throughout the course of a game.

After the sophomore dialed up four touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes to a 38-10 victory against Penn State Saturday, however, Barrett cracked through his shell of composure as he strolled to the podium to meet reporters.

"'Sup?" Barrett asked, a grin showing two rows of his pearly white teeth inhabiting his face.

It was just for a brief moment, but that is all that was really needed. This was a different Barrett than the one who last spoke with the media early in Ohio State's fall camp.

"I felt good," Barrett said. "I liked what we had game planned for them, we just had to execute the game plan. I felt good out there."

Please see the light, Urban. Jones did his job last year... but this is J.T.'s team. If the Buckeyes want to make the playoffs, this is the way to go.

I think it's nice to have both as a threat. The need for defenses to prepare for both is fun. Clearly the team is playing well with both playing like this, so let's not just write Cardale off completely. He was very effective against Maryland, and though he struggled a little against Penn State, he protected the ball, and we still scored 21 first half points with the Cardale, then Braxton, then JT plan. As long as Cardale continues to protect the ball, he'll be fine. If it's all JT, then that's fine, too. But I LOVE making defenses guess. And I love having options. There may be a game where the read option isn't as effective, but the downfield passing game is.

I'm just going to sit back, and continue to enjoy this ride. The team as a whole is playing at a much higher level right now than they have all year.

Rutgers won't be a cakewalk, they have found some weapons. Hopefully we can use these games to just give MSU and ttun more and more to have to worry about. The way the lines are playing, there is no excuse for this team not to be 10-0 headed into the MSU game.
