QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

8. Everybody is much, much happier to know who the quarterback is.

Watching Mickey Marotti answer if the offseason is easier when the starting quarterback is known, you could almost see him physically shed the burden all over again. He's not the only one, because Barrett felt exactly the same way.

There are no mysteries to the quarterback situation any longer, and having mysteries at quarterback is never a good thing, as we saw repeatedly last season.

As mentioned at the outset, this was a very upbeat group of Buckeyes, and that is in no small thanks to having every idea of who the quarterback is in 2016.

ENTERING HIS FOURTH SPRING AT OHIO STATE, IT IS AT LONG LAST J.T. BARRETT'S SHOW

67969_h.jpg,qitok=jzOega2o.pagespeed.ce.d5xq1F9Qw_.jpg

J.T. Barrett wears two bracelets, one on each wrist and each with its own specific message. On the left, it says ALWAYS COMPETE and on the right, WIN FOREVER.

Motivational slogans? Cool catchphrases? Slick-looking rubber bands? You choose how to look at them, but perhaps they're a way to keep Barrett grounded as he plows through winter workouts with the rest of his teammates for the first time in his Ohio State tenure as the clear-cut starting quarterback.

"Man, I didn't think about that," Barrett said Wednesday.

Barrett didn't even recognize the reality he is knee deep in after a 12-1 season where Urban Meyer yo-yoed Cardale Jones and the guy who finished fifth in the 2014 Heisman Trophy voting back and forth at the game's most vital position.

For the first time in now his fourth year with the program, the Buckeyes are Barrett's—and his alone—to lead. He is the guy at quarterback. There is no controversy.

"At that position, having a guy especially his caliber, a leader, great player in that position on offense in this program running this offense, he knows how to run it — it's vital," starting center and fifth-year senior Pat Elflein said Wednesday. "It's huge."

Meyer and strength coach Mickey Marotti dubbed Barrett, Elflein and middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan captains for 2016 not even a week after Ohio State took down Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, 44-28, New Year's Day. The Buckeyes might name more captains in August, but it wouldn't really be surprising if they didn't.

With such a young team prepping for 2016, looking to that trio of returning starters and leaders is wise. And it all starts with Barrett — after all, he is the quarterback.

"You know he's the leader, he's the quarterback, he's going to be the guy," Marotti, Meyer's strength and conditioning sensei, said of Barrett. "You know. He's a guy I lean on a lot. He's really helped those young receivers, running backs really develop."

Just sayin': WIN FOREVER is Petey's "catch phrase".

There's Something Different Around Ohio State Offseason Workouts This Year: A Starting Quarterback

BarrettMillerSmiling.jpg

A year ago, life wasn’t great for J.T. Barrett. The Ohio State quarterback was working his way back from a broken ankle suffered in the final game of the regular season and had just watched fellow quarterback Cardale Jones lead his team to the national championship.

“I feel like last year when the quarterback controversy came and trying to be healthy, I finally got healthy then I wasn’t aware of where I was at as far as football,” he said.

After an offseason of questions as to who would lead the Buckeyes, Jones won the job but struggled to keep the offense at the level expected.

It took Barrett until halfway through the 2015 season to get back to feeling and playing like himself before winning back the starting job, but heading into next year he is the undisputed starting quarterback.

“It’s definitely going in the right direction,” Barrett said of this offseason.

“Now having that behind me it’s something you don’t have to worry about. Now the focus is always trying to get better and developing skills, working on my craft, and then as a leader on this team focusing on bringing the young guys to the level I’m at.”
