The best part is the fact that I now have faith in the backups so if JT bangs a knee again or gets sick, we don't all have that immediate fear that the backup was going to be bad. 12 Gauge immediately erased all that fear but that's so rare.

I can see him being a total surgeon this year, picking people completely apart in this offense. If the line gels with their talents and gets it going fairly early on, JT will end up in New York for the Heisman ceremony. And he'll deserve it.

J.T. Barrett Was on a Mission This Spring

Urban Meyer has talked lovingly about the quarterback competition last season between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett, but neither player was as fond of it as Meyer was.

Competition is what makes good teams great, but a competition between a quarterback who was coming off of the most prolific season in Big Ten history and one who had just led his team to a national title isn't exactly an every day occurrence.

Both Barrett and Jones knew what the other was capable of, but what made the competition a hindrance to the quarterbacks was that everybody else knew what the other was capable of as well.

So instead of trying to be like J.T. Barrett, Barrett was trying to be more like Cardale Jones, because he thought that would give him a better shot at winning the job. Jones, meanwhile, after he won the competition, then had to look over to the sideline after every failed conversion on third down to see if Barrett was warming up yet.

It was not an ideal situation, and Barrett eventually realized his mistakes. Thanks to that realization, Barrett was able to refocus on simply doing what he excelled at last season, and then expand from there.

According to quarterbacks coach Tim Beck, everything that Barrett did this spring was right in line with the confidence he needs to have in himself in order to succeed this season.

"The best thing about J.T. is that he approaches every practice the way he works," he said. "He's on a mission. He practiced like he was on a mission. He played extremely confident, fast. Even in the spring game he had a couple of faux pas, a couple of interceptions, balls deflected, but when he was back there throwing it, he threw the ball really well. His accuracy and placement were excellent."

J.T. Barrett Readying Young Buckeye Offense for Big Things in 2016

16-04-02-FB-0135-DH.jpg

The Buckeyes worked out in Ohio Stadium Thursday morning, taking part in another annual rite of passage, which basically makes it any other day in the summer for an Ohio State football player.

This year's team, however, is not just any other team. It is young and unproven. That's what makes these summer workouts so important, and that's when the leadership on the team steps up and shows the young players how things are supposed to be done.

It was no surprise when Urban Meyer named three captains back in the winter to give his players examples to look up to, but even without those titles Raekwon McMillan, Pat Elflein and J.T. Barrett were already looked up to.

What began in the winter then led into the spring. McMillan led his defense throughout camp, bringing along younger players while also being helped by junior linebackers Chris Worley and Dante Booker on either side of him.

Elflein, meanwhile, was just one of two starters to return on the offensive line, which left him and Billy Price to provide the proper guidance for an offensive line that is going to feature three new starters this season.

For Barrett, he was not only mentoring his backup Joe Burrow, he was also mentoring an entire offense — an offense that lost its three starting receivers, starting tight end and starting running back. This was an incredibly important spring for the Ohio State skill players, but Barrett thinks they did what they needed to do.

"Yeah, I do," he said. "I think it was more being able to see us playing up tempo, playing fast, and just being able to throw on the perimeter. I think we were able to do that."

The fact that they were able to realize those successes despite dealing with so many injuries is not lost on Barrett.

"That’s the thing about it, we did that without our four top guys. So when those guys get incorporated in — we’re going to do a lot of work this summer — so when those guys get in the mix, I think we’re going to have a nice little rotation on the edge."
