The Next Jameis Winston Is ... ?

If Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel and Marcus Mariota have taught us anything over the last two years, it’s that you no longer have to be an upperclassmen to excel at quarterback at this level. One year on the scout team was all the aforementioned trio needed to explode on to the scene and gobble up national honors and notoriety.

Like no time in history, young hurlers are poised to hit the ground running shortly after arriving on their campus of choice. A little wide-eyed and raw, sure, but no longer overwhelmed by the prospect of leading a team of older teammates. Redshirt freshmen quarterbacks have won the last two Heisman Trophies, a notion that would have seemed outlandish just a few years ago. Who’s next in 2014? Which untested quarterback is ready to follow in the footsteps of Jameis and Johnny by taking the quantum leap from redshirt to rising star?

10. J.T. Barrett, Ohio State
The Buckeyes knew they’d either be cranking up the Heisman hype machine or breaking out the training wheels, pending Braxton Miller’s decision about his future. Fortunately for OSU, Miller will stay for his senior year.

Had Miller foregone his final year of eligibility, Ohio State would have parted ways with its top two quarterbacks of 2013. Cardale Jones would have been the new veteran, but Barrett was coming on very strong. Tough and athletically-gifted in the mold of Miller, he has also impressed the staff with his intelligence, poise and leadership, key attributes not easily taught to young quarterbacks. In the event of an emergency, he’ll be ready to go.

After attending the Spring Game and then watching it on DVR, I must say I was impressed with the play of J.T. He was accurate with a fairly quick release. I think he had the better pass protection than what Cardale was getting, so one has to factor that in also. Seems to have the added advantage of being a decent scrambling QB.

He played just alright. That injury last year was a major setback and he still has a lot rust and is trying to adjust to the college game. It was a tad premature to anoint him the backup to Braxton coming into spring. Hell need some more time to adjust, but I'm very sure he can do it

Who's anointing? From C-deck JT looked to be the better QB on Saturday.

agree that JTB played well in the spring game.

dislike the nickname of JT, that is Jim Tressel. going with JTB here.

disagree that troy was lesser rated. while not as hyped as zwick, he was an elite 11 qb.

best long term qb in ohio that year was brian hoyer of the browns / st. ignatius / michigan state.

but i don't have a ribbon yet so what do i know anyway.

as for the last time a lesser rated qb played better in the spring game, i will go with this

J T sort of reminds me of Troy Smith in a way. I noticed the quick release but the way he runs also is something I was impressed with. Cardale seemed like he was in a hurry to release and find his open man. His receivers were not helping his cause with all the drops, but I think he was under a lot of pressure compared to Barrett. I have to watch the vidieo a couple more times, to get a better Idea of who I thnk will be Millers back up. Sure will miss Kenny Guitton.

Lesser? Cardale was a 3-star and J.T. was a 4-star borderline top 100 guy. I will have to rewatch the game but I remember being impressed with JT's decisiveness. Just a spring game of course but you have to at least be encouraged about his future here.
