QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

so now he's a hot NFL commodity that will leave two years early? Eesh. There are hundreds of websites that are dedicated to mock drafts including multiple years out, and quarterbacks top the list of guys they track. Who has him this high ?

Two brutal comparisons. Wilson has a very good arm and is just as athletic as Barrett.

RG3 meanwhile is a world class hurdler with a big arm, terrific accuracy and a deadly deep ball (at least in college). Barrett is not in the same galaxy in terms of arm strength or athleticism and throws a pretty average deep ball.

Uh, two years early? Last time I checked he's a redshirt freshman right this moment, meaning he'll be a redshirt sophomore this upcoming season. So, if he goes pro after the 2016 season as I think is most likely, that would be after four years.

As for "brutal" comparisons, apparently you missed that part where I specified that Barrett did what he did in his very first season playing, while RGIII and Wilson all played multiple seasons. Barrett's first season was better than Wilson's final season and not all much below RGIII's last season. Now, am I saying he's as good as they are? Nope, not now at least. But to think that a guy that is two inches taller, 20 pounds bigger, and faster than a current Super Bowl QB, and had a better freshman year than that Super Bowl QBs 5th year, can't be a serious draft prospect with one to two more year experience is, well, flat-out stupid.

I'm aware of how old he is. It seems you are unaware of your declaration that he's "gone, period" if he repeats his 2014 performance in 2015, hence the two years early comment.

What is your idea of a high draft slot when talking about Barrett?

If he is a clear cut high NFL pick someday, what does he do well in terms of NFL skills ? His crafty running, ability to run through or around tacklers and strong operation of the option are not valued skills at the next llevel
He distributes well and throws with good accuracy but needs to improve his deep ball quite a bit to be a true NFL commodity let alone a high one.

Leaving after three years is not two years "early" even if he has a fifth year seeing as most folks consider the normal timeframe in a program as four years. That might be semantics, but that's how I see it.

You mean sort of like Russell Wilson's year at Wisconsin? Russell didn't get picked until the 3rd round because many executives thought of him like you think of Barrett now, and now they see what a 5'11'', 205lb QB with skills, heart, determination, and decent passing abilities can accomplish in the league. And now that JT has a year under his belt, when/if he is the starter again you can bet that Meyer won't be as tentative with him as he was first half or so of last season.

Won't disagree much with you there. And I also think he needs to be more consistent...I think that's his biggest knock. That said, his having the second highest QB rating in the country, even after the VT clusterbang, and doing so in his very first year, leads me to believe any real improvement this (or next) season will make him quite an attractive prospect to more than a few NFL teams. Keep in mind he set the conference all-time record for TDs accounted for. The kid flat moves the ball down field.

how many redshirt sophomore qbs declare for the draft?


Wilson was looked down upon because of height. He was a winner, a leader, had a very nice arm and very nice athleticism for a dropback qb.

Barrett will undoubtedly improve and solidify himself as a mid round pick Imo. His arm strength and injury history will be too much for scouts to get onboard with a high draft slot.

Nfl scouts and mocks were abuzz over cardale after 3 games because of his Nfl size, rocket arm and ability to stand tall and escape the pocket. What he does this fall will be the difference between a top 15 pick and a later 2nd or 3rd round slot (assuming this super friendly qb system leads to solid play)

That's the other part of this. The incredible system, blocking, running game and skill players make their lives easy in a way they will not enjoy in the Nfl. Also, if cardale starts and goes pro, there's the risk of his rawness in the league causing scouts to attribute their success to system inflation

Johnny Manziel, who got drafted 22nd overall. Barrett may not be quite as good as Manziel was in college, but he won't be a head case like Manziel and thus more attractive to NFL managers.

Don't see how his injury history will come into play, provided his ankle heals fully.

Not sure what this has to do with Barrett. Is Jones the more prototypical QB? You bet. Just because Jones could end up a top 10-15 pick doesn't mean that Barrett won't be in the top 35-40.

I so love debates about what a player can or cannot accomplish. If there is one thing I can say about the NFL it would be that there would seem to be plenty of players in the league that have something more than the usual measurable stats. QB stats often turn into the biggest bunch of bullshit every year when it comes to the draft. I mean at least half the league has a sub par QB anyway, most have more than one. Doesn't Tebow have more playoff wins than most starting QBs atm? JT could be a legitimate NFL caliber talent by 2016. Winning games helps that along rather well.
