Last year without Braxton would've been ugly. This year, hopefully, other units have improved enough that we can be better than ok with JTB. I'm still optimistic and I listened to Trent Dilfer, a guy who knows something about winning by not overplaying at qb and is a better analyst than player, go on and on about JT on the radio this morning having worked with him at the Elite 11, etc. Dilfer says he's the right player for this ind of circumstance: disciplined leader with more than a little ability. I'll take that... sounds like Krenzel.

I get what you are saying but I am certainly not declaring we are better off without Braxton, because as you said we are not. I've maintained all off season that this is a very fast and explosive (albeit young) offense that we have surrounded Braxton with which has not changed.

Like Urban said today his skill guys are chomping at the bit because there's about 100 yards per game or so that are now for the taking. He knows this just went from being the Braxton show to being a more TEAM effort. Much like Urban I do not expect the production from Braxton to be all on Barrett but rather spread around. Like Urban said and much of my point was suppose to be this offense will resemble the one which Guiton lead which is one of balance and being less predictable.

If I had said "oh [Mark May] I don't care Braxton is out because Barrett is better anyways" then I see your point but clearly that's not my point. Again, like Urban said today one cog was removed and another was put in but otherwise everything around it remains unchanged.

Feel free to disagree but don't ever lump me in a category as a fair weather fan who will turn on them at the drop of a hat.

Yes. All of this. When Kenny was in it was incredible how successful options and zones were when called. Kenny did a better job at getting 3-4 backs involved and 5 WRs per game. He wasn't as skilled as Braxton but he was better at distributing.

I too just see a very deep offense that may average less points but can be every bit as dangerous.

I think a lot of that had to do with Coaching staff and Hyde being suspended. It was easier to mix in more backs when you didn't have a Beast like Hyde taking over games with his ridiculous ypc.
The play calling seemed to get pretty predictable with Brax too. It's 3rd and 7 and the RB motions out of the backfield... gee... I wonder... it's not a QB draw is it?
I could do w/o another tunnel screen for awhile too.

The play calling also had a lot to do with the opponents. You can experiment a bit with the play calling and rotate players a lot more against opponents that you know are inferior.

All that said, I don't think JT will be as good as Guiton coming out the gate. I'm hoping things have geled by the time conference play starts... but VTech is looking like a very major hurdle for a very young team that unexpectedly has a new QB with a new OLine and new skill players. I'm sure Beamer is licking his chops... I suppose silver lining is that there won't be much material to prepare for whatever JT's offense will look like. Just the Spring game and Navy (where I have a feeling it'll look more like a Tressel offense at times... but now with more tunnel screens! :wink:

I'm more concerned with Navy than VT. Navy's offense could present a real problem, it's on the road, and first game jitters = a potential recipe for disaster.

VT, on the other hand, is in the Shoe, they've been exceptionally mediocre the past two years, and they also have a first year starter at QB. VT a few years ago would worry me, but they haven't been the same since they lost to scUM in the Sugar Bowl after 2011.

Maybe I'm under-rating Navy, but run defense was the one thing the defense was good at last year and there's not a lot of change in that respect for the front 7.
We have the talent on offense to get our points even if it's mostly on the ground and they stack the box.
I'm envisioning something like 17-6 at halftime; maybe 27-13 at the end. Keep everything buttoned up, build everyone's confidence by keeping it simple.

I don't know a lot about VT this year, but Beamer can generally be relied on to field a good defense. This is JT's trial by fire. If it was later in the season, I don't think it'd be as big of a deal... but 2nd game for a team completely retooling on both sides? Can't help feeling it'll be close.

I'm just hoping that if JT4 were to falter or play below some people's (monumental) expectations, that we support him and let him grow. I am expecting some growing pains, and just hope our defense can help us through until JT has a full grasp of what he's doing. And if he happens to set the world on fire ala Jameis, I'll be overjoyed.

I'm basically a pessimist; however, I got a really good feeling about JT doing real well this season. Meyer seems to be saying a lot of good things about him. (Yeah, I know what you are saying, what choice does he have?, well he has the option of playing Cardale Jones.) Really expect JT to have a great year and by November everyone will be saying "Braxton who?".

Don't disagree there. I think it will be close. But, their D was very vulnerable over their last 3-4 games last year, and they have been pretty inept on offense for a few years now. Navy's gimmicky system scares me more as an "upset" threat.

Va Techs offense might be even worse this year.....they still haven't decided on a QB and as bad as Logan Thomas was throwing the ball he was still their biggest running weapon, the supposed replacements arent on his level when it comes to athleticism, on defense Secondary is awesome but front 7 has a lot of questions.
