Just throwing this out there: major sports are often locked in to "that's the way we've always done it." It took something like 20 years after Red Hickey and the 49ers began using the shotgun with Billy Kilmer before another team/coach was willing to try it. And look at all the re-tread coaches and managers who find continual employment without ever accomplishing much - Joe Kuharich, Don Zimmer, Tommy Tuberville, Frank Solich.

Terrell never developed the throwing motion pros like, he didn't play on a pro style team, and let's not forget that he took down his team and his coach through his personal actions. To take on Terrell goes against the institutional; "We never did it that way before," mentality. No one in the NFL believes that a running QB can survive the season and no one believes that a team can play a system such as Ohio State's or Oregon's and win in the NFL. It's the football equivalent of not bunting the runner to second.

That's not necessarily true, Marcus Mariota is one of the top prospects for next year's NFL draft.

Not saying this just to be disputacious, but as soon as a QB such as Vick, Pryor, Newton, Mariota gets drafted, the first words out are: can he last a whole season?

The toll on running backs is probably the answer. IMO Until a Cam Newton wins more than one Super Bowl and lasts more than five seasons without a serious injury, the NFL is going to see most "running" QBs as a liablity

Just sayin': Yeah, he could have grossed around $2M (2011 - 2013) with Oakland; however, after the agent's commissions, 5 game suspension (loss income), taxes, living expenses, and helping his family, etc. he probably has way less than $1M left. I'm not sure what he got from Seattle; but, in the NFL you usually have to make the team (each year) for the contract to kick in and actually get the money.

Looks like he will have made a minimum of 2.7M for his career (no matter what seattle was offering). BUT you have to remember Oakland is in California, so all of his taxes combined would be around 67% (40 fed, 15 med/ss, 12 cal plus anything the city may take), so his take-home would have been around $900k. That's depressing. That's without considering what his agent takes. Does anyone know if he held a home in Florida that he lived in for 6 months and a day?

Eh, not quite that dire. 15% med/ss is actually only 7.65% and that full amount only applies to the first $110k or so, then it drops down to 1.45%. The max fed rate has been 35% for the past couple years and that is only once you get over $388,000. The California rate only hits 12.3% when you get over $500k.

I'd guess the total tax rate is closer to 50% than 67%.

Yes, THIS is how dull the OSU-KSU game is.

Again, going to respond to this game because I hate playing Kent State!
I read in a wiki this morning that Med/SS was 15% combined, but now I see that was wrong. Stupid Wikis. I'm not sure when the increase was, but the fed rate is currently 39.6% when you make 406k (he broke that every year, with his signing bonus the first year). For the cali rate, he was only under 500k in year 2. So yea, it is closer to 50-55%. He probably also has a few deductions that would bring that down a decent amount to the mid 40s. 50, 55, 67, either way it is too freaking much.

The max fed rate went back up to 39.6% from 35% beginning 1/1/13, but those tax rates are marginal, so only the amount in excess of $388k is taxed at 35%, the rest is taxed at brackets of 28/25/15/10 %. Same deal with California -- everything is marginal, getting into a higher bracket doesn't mean that the entire amount is taxed at the max rate. The average rate will always be quite a bit less than the max. The truth is bad enough that hyperbole should be unnecessary, in my opinion.

Regardless of all that....yes, a large chunk of his gross salary has been paid out in taxes and agent fees. To be anywhere close to set for life, he will have to have been very conservative with that money, which I would be pretty shocked to learn.
