RB Bri'onte Dunn (dismissed from team)

="OHSportsFan, post: 2373318, member: 1936"]Really hoping this turns into a Etienne Sabino (mid-career redshirt) situation, but the lack of rumblings his direction is concerning.[/quote]

Difference is though, sabino was at a position of need where we could afford to wait for him out of necessity. Dunn doesn't have that luxury, as we're just stocked st
the RB position. And he could get passed up very quickly.

Losing 2 RBs after this season (Hall and Hyde). The position opens up a lot more next year, no?

The fact that Ball and Elliot get reps are telling, however.

1. Altercation with police early in his career
2. Not contributing on special teams
3. Loaded...... LOADED backfield

These 3 things coupled with a coach who is a great recruiter, who is in no mood for compromise, and is in a hunt for a NC. Dunn has simply not put himself in a good position especially in an environment with zero margin of error.

the "altercation" occurred before last season and didn't affect him then, why would it now?

The special teams thing is very weird - he was on them last year as well.

And yes the backfield is super loaded. Like scary loaded.

Did Urban or any other coach explain to Dunn during the recruiting process that special team play was a requirement for a player to see the field at his position? Bri'onte was all but a done deal to Michigan with his cousin. Also curious to know if this special team play rule only applies to the RBs.

I am reading between the lines here, but I don't think there is any "special teams rule". I think there is a "meet the expectations laid out for you whatever they may be" rule. No explaining needed for that one.

I would have lost a lot of money yesterday betting against five running backs getting multiple carries in a game in which none were named Dunn or Hyde. The competition is stiff and the effort needs to match that.

But that's just me reading tea leaves.

Yes, the position opens up after the season, but if he's not even getting carries as it is now, then how does that put him in a better position when the season ends? It's still very early in the season, but I see guys like Wilson, ball and Elliott moving up the depth chart at a rapid pace. It's not even set in stone that smith will be a starter next year. We are very loaded now and I haven't even included the incoming 2014 kids(and coach urban and co. Have shown that they'll play a true frosh in a heartbeat if they feel he's ready) like parris Campbell, and even curtis Samuel could see sometime at RB. Getting every game rep now is key

From a 9/3/13 OZone article:

Three coaches answered questions on Monday, and each of them delivered the same message.

"We kind of have a rule around here that you can't play unless you're involved in special teams," coach Urban Meyer said.

"We have a philosophy that if you want to play your respective position, you have to provide some value to this team on special teams," running backs coach Stan Drayton said minutes later.

The difference between the three-star recruit that becomes an every-game starter and five-star guy that rides the bench isn't talent. It's the ability to contribute on special teams.

Three different coaches have now stated there is a special teams rule. I don't know, when three coaches make the same statement, I tend to believe there is a special teams rule. I am only interested in when this rule was explained to Bri'onte. I have no problem with a coach asking a player to play on special teams . Even Troy Smith played early in his career as a return man a few times.

I do not believe there is a hard and fast rule that you must play special teams. I believe there is a hard and fast rule that you must be willing to do what is necessary to help the team win. Many times that may require play on special teams. Reading between the lines, Dunn may be willing to play hard as a running back, but Meyer demands you play hard at whatever you're asked to do. That should not need to be explained during recruiting.

Love Brionte as much as the next guy, but personally speaking I find following the team much more enjoyable when cheering for the players that are playing than sulking about the players that are not.

That said I'm sure Brionte is going to get a shot if he keeps his head up. There are guys ahead right now, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a shot sometime in league play.

He's got terrific "potential" but "competing" means more than just being good with the ball in your hands. Some kids may not like that and may decide to go elsewhere. I'm not saying Dunn will leave. But it's possible.

I think it would be a smart move. While the power back is something that urban can and does use, we probably only need 1 or 2 on the roster. This year that's hyde and smith (and to some extent ball). Next year hyde is gone and smith is a senior. Give them a little separation.
