RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

Meyer acknowledged that Carlos Hyde should have gotten the ball more against Wisconsin. He wouldn?t get an argument from his junior running back, who ran for two touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, but didn?t feel completely sated. Hyde carried only 15 times for 87 yards.

?I just felt like if they would have given me the ball more, I could have gotten the momentum going,? he said. ?But that?s my coaches? decision. I live with it and do what my coaches say.?

His tone wasn?t angry, just disappointed. But Hyde got the ball when it mattered. He gained 11 on a sweep to the right side to start Ohio State?s overtime touchdown drive.

?All game, they weren?t respecting that,? Hyde said. ?They were just following Braxton, not following the running backs. They called the play and they weren?t ready for it.?

Three plays later, Hyde ran in for an easy 2-yard score.
?I wasn?t really satisfied with that touchdown because I feel we shouldn?t even have been in that position,? he said.

I was so baffled that he wasn't getting more touches that, by the beginning of the fourth quarter, I had convinced myself that their offensive game plan was drawn up as much to deceive TSUN as anything else. The coaches would certainly call that bs, but I cannot come up with any other explanation.

Sometimes I think that Braxton doesn't give the ball to Carlos because he is making a wrong read at the line of scrimmage.

I would be interested to see what Grad and some of the other coaches have to say on this. My little experience as a coach on the other side of the ball showed me the Wisconsin D was totally out of position and babsically decided not to care bout the option to Hyde on several reads but as Carlos pointed out the ball didn't come is way.

Carlos is a beast. If Carlos goes over 100 Yds this weekend, I think the Buckeyes win by 10+

There were very few designed RB plays though. Should have been more.

There were 41 rushing plays. 3 of them were sacks. 20 of them Miller ran. 2 of them Philly ran. That left 15 plays for Hyde.

I'll have to re-watch the game to find out how many of those 15 runs were options and how many were just up the gut. But two of the up the gut runs went for TDs. That should have been enough to say give him the ball on designed runs more.

My son and I were watching the game and he never played. He asked me what Wisconsin was doing to Braxton. We used the DVR to look. They were mostly one on one with the WR's. They were bringing the safety down as a spy. The DE's first priority was to set the edges. The LB's were flowing with Braxton. When he went to run, he was hemmed in at the edge and when he went to cut inside, he ran into the LB's and spy.

So my son asks me, "What do you do to counter that?" Now, I am virtually an idiot with offensive x's and o's, but I told him they have already shown it - throw screen passes if the DB's are off or give the ball to Hyde. My gosh, he was gashing them every other time he did get it.

If a fat old man sitting in his easy chair eating bean dip knows what to do, how can an obviously gifted OC keep asking Braxton to run what the D has committed itself toward stopping?

For heaven's sake, take what they are giving you! Let Carlos hurt them until they had to come off their origninal game plan and then go back to it.

I remember Urban saying in the summer, "This is an easy game. It's the coaches that make it complicated sometimes." Prescient.

That said, thank you Coach Herman for giving me exciting O to watch this year, and the Buckeyes are 11-0 even if they did choose to get #11 the hard way.

Both Iowa and Northwestern ran above their averages against Michigan.
You know Hyde, Smith, and Miller will be chomping at the bit.

You are undoubtedly correct, but wouldn't you think that the coaches would be seeing the same thing and talking to Braxton about it?

Regardless, I hope to see Carlos trucking Wolverine defenders this Saturday (and receivers getting open, and Braxton juking guys out of their jocks, etc., etc.)

Sometimes I think Braxton thinks that he can do things with the ball that others cannot and that is just my opinion:crazy:

Count me in on wanting to see A LOT of Carlos Hyde running the ball on Saturday against the skunkbears. About 20-25 carries sounds about right to me. Make it where they have to key on Carlos and then that is going to give Braxton the open lanes to break off some nice runs.

One thing we can be sure of: Urban Meyer is going to have this team ready to play.

GO BUCKS!!

Beat scUM!

From what I've seen of the scUM defense, I'd be happy with 11 carries for Hyde.

Each one being 80-90 yards a carry
