Mike Weber Meeting Expectations for Buckeyes

MikeWeberCheckIn.jpg

The day before Mike Weber signed with the Buckeyes in 2015, his future was a complete unknown simply because nobody was really sure if he was going to end up at Ohio State or Michigan.

Once that portion of his future was figured out, however, then it became somewhat safe to begin thinking about what he could become. As an Army All-American, talent wasn't an issue, and following in the footsteps of Carlos Hyde and Ezekiel Elliott meant that workhorses were welcome.

Weber made his name available to everyone during his first fall camp last season when he displayed the kind of toughness and ability that has become embarrassingly commonplace in the Scarlet and Gray. He became the second Buckeye freshman to have his black stripe removed last year, but a knee injury set him back and he eventually redshirted.

This past spring, however, Weber was splitting first-team reps with fifth-year senior Bri'onte Dunn, and looking good the entire way. He's still obviously young, so he had to fix his share of youthful mistakes. The improvement was readily apparent, however.

"He did [improve]," running backs coach Tony Alford said following spring ball. "Yes, he did. He definitely improved. He definitely has grown up a bunch. He had a really good spring. He's a physical player, which we thought he was, but he really started gravitating toward really trying to learn this offense the way we like him to, so yeah."

He reminds me quite a bit of Doug Martin. Short, muscular guys with good lateral mobility and vision are so hard for defenders to play against. With the trees we've been bringing in along the O-Line, it's going to frustrate the crap out of the opposing teams just trying to find him.

They could try looking in the end zone

If he was good enough to be fought over when he was a doughy recruit, he ought to be intense now. One of the things that has been a significant upgrade with Urban, is the selection/coaching of RBs. JT obviously had MoC, until he didn't, and brought Hyde in. Hyde didn't become a pro-caliber talent until UFM & Co. got him on the right page and coached him up. Now, we've got a fully weaponized Weber and Williams right behind him with at least Dobbins coming in who just won the Opening. As He says, the future is bright at Ohio State.

Kid looks like a good one. Amazing the transformation these guys go through.

FWIW, JT had a lot of good backs, MC, Pittman, Beanie, Herron, and as you noted, brought Hyde. We had a lean period for a couple years because MC went AWOL, but otherwise it's hard to complain.

JT actually recruited pretty well at RB, just a number of guys never made the transition from HS to college(whether it was academics, injuries, etc). Let's also not forget about Brandon Saine, Jordan Hall, Jamal Berry and Rod Smith(and 3 of them have even made NFL rosters, I'm not sure about Berry). OSU has been solid with RBs for a while now, can't wait to see what Weber brings to the table as I feel very confident about him
