RB Robert Smith (B1G Freshman of Year, 2x Pro Bowler, All Pro)

scooter1369

HTTR Forever.
This Sunday at 3pm at Borders Books at 4545 Kenny Road, Robert Smith will read from and discuss his book The Rest of the Iceberg, An Insider View on the World of Sport and Celebrity.

This I've gotta see.

He's quoted in the Dispatch as saying "Young people need to know that education is the most imprtant aspect of their lives. There's nothing wrong with dreaming of being in the NFL or becoming a famous singer. But I think too many of these kids lose focus on their education, fall behind, and never catch up."

Here is the one guy I want teaching my kids about focusing on education. :shake:

He did leave early. It's not exactly that simple though. He quit the team before his true soph season, to focus on school. Rejoined a year later. Left for the NFL after his third year, but did get his degree. Originally was pre-med, but ended up with some sort of business degree(can't find a link).

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I knew he was smart, but I was under the impression that fame had gone to his head a la Clarett.

I was obviously mistaken. Thankfully.

The difference is -- Robert Smith was never behind in terms of education. He came out of high school highly qualified, and took a year away from football for academics, and when he left for the NFL was in good standing. Had he not been able to make it to the NFL, he would be doing fine in life today.

Looking at the number of top recruits year by year who never make the grade (just go through recent Top 100 lists), there are plenty of kids who DO have the ability to possibly make it big in the NFL, but whose academics are so poor that they never set foot on a college field. His advice is certainly as sound for them as it is for the kid who never makes it.

The negative attitude so many "fans" have toward Robert Smith has always baffled me. He has a certain amount of arrogance, sure, but wouldn't you say that is pretty common in elite athletes? He sure is nowhere near as arrogant as Lance Armstrong, or even Chris Spielman.

You know I hear the same things about Robert Smith and what an ass He is, I have seen in in public away from the limelight so to speak on two occasions. One time He and Joey Galloway came into a resturant I managed for lunch it was slow that day no body really saw them and they ate and tipped the waitress well and left. The other time was last summer. I again was working as a manager in a resturant in the Easton area. Robert Smith, and I am assuming his gf came in adn sat down at the bar. We were packed that night so they had to wait for a table. As He was sitting there a little kid, maybe 8 years old came up and asked nicely for his autograph. Smith looked at the kid, and was like sure who should I make it out to etc. Very nice about it, after the kid walked away, his gf looked at him and was like that will be enough of that, the last thing We need is everyone asking for an autograph, he just sort of rolled his eyes and looked away from her and started talking to the other couple that was with them. Overall from what I have seen he is a class act, and hopefully He got rid of the bitch

I feel the same way. I was fairly young when Robert was playing for us and loved the guy. It did seem odd that he sat out a year for academics and left for the NFL early but I'd never heard anything bad about the guy. Like I said, I was younger and didn't live in the Columbus area so at the time all I had was what I saw on Saturday and read in the paper on Sunday. There does seem to be a lot of negativity towards Robert, though.

I saw him on the Daily Show, and he kept giving Jon Stewart a hard time for not reading his book. At one point he even said, "you didn't even read my acknowledgments!" It was all in good fun, though.

I liked his point about pro sports players being portayed as "heroes." He thinks that someone saying that he is a hero is ridiculous when you have people putting their life on the line every day for this country. I thought it was a very humble thing to say.
