RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

Did he lose the fumble because of poor mechanics of holding the ball or did the ball come out due to a defensive helmet jarring it lose? I thought it was a latter.

Looked like Rod was holding it correctly but the defensive player put his helmet on it. Urban said that is the best way to force a fumble. I don't think Rod should lose much playing time for this one.

well, what do you do with smith? 136 all purpose yards, 1 TD, but another fumble. he's obviously a playmaker but if this goes on much longer i don't see this ending well.

Ending Well? Can't we just justify that fumble the same way people justified Carlos Hyde's fumble against Nebraska?

Anyway, this guy is a monster. He's a SOPHOMORE! Only going to get better and obviously, he's got to improve his ball security. I've got a lot of faith in him to do that and become the player he has shown flashes of.

I remember a young Eddie George early in his career fumbling the ball at the goal line that ended up costing the Buckeyes a game (Illinois?). He got it figured out and went on to do pretty well. I hope Rod Smith gets it figured out like EG did. This kid could be special.

That was a good play by the defender. 2 hands on the ball would have helped, but I don't think its necessarily something that will put him in the dog house. The kid has gotten progressively better with ball security this season, and he'll continue getting better. Can't wait to see how much damage he does once he gets an iron grip on that ball.

I want to see Rod do well, I just felt awful for him when that ball came loose. You know he knows better & is trying out there. Or else he would have signed the papers - but Urban knew he would battle & I've been rooting for him.

Some players can get over a fumbling problem, some cannot. But why does everyone with a fumbling problem get compared with Eddie George?

He hasn't come close to earning that comparison yet, stop using it everyone please. Thanks.

People are not being compared to Eddie and running style, numbers, or potential when bringing up the subject of fumbling. People bring up Eddie because he had issues with fumbling his freshman year and ended up being one of the best at Ohio State. People are saying that even though Rod Smith is having fumbling problems early, he still overcome that and can have a great career, just like Eddie did. They are not comparing his running style or his numbers to Eddie.
