RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

Some players can get over a fumbling problem, some cannot. But why does everyone with a fumbling problem get compared with Eddie George?

He hasn't come close to earning that comparison yet, stop using it everyone please. Thanks.

Believe it was actually Tressel who started the comparison between Rod and Eddie. During Sugar Bowl practice, he said Rod reminded him of both Beanie and Eddie.

No one is comparing him to George but rather simply stating that even the greatest backs had early fumbling problems, so use some reading comprehension please. Thanks.

Because defenses don't go after the ball anyways?

They do but the attention when tackling some players is focused more on wrapping up and getting to the ground. See our change in defensive focus starting with purdont, we went from a ball slapping slipped tackle d to wrap up and stop.

Who the ball carrier is does make a difference. See the nfl, when the d has an opportunity to take down a qb you see often times an attempt at jarring the ball, while you see this with this it's far less prevalent.

The original post made me picture Coach Meyer with tears in his eyes taking Rod out behind the barn and putting him down.

Apparently I have to spread more rep around but that just killed me laughing :rofl::rofl:

But on a more serious note sometimes the issue is just getting more comfortable with the ball in your hands. I admitedly had fumble issues my junior year but when I got the ball alot my senior year, I had zero fumbles on around 300 touches. It is something that can disappear and yesterday, that was just a damn good hit on the ball. In any event, I hope Rod works it out of his system because he is starting to really shows flashes of greatness.

He's getting awful close to going from having "early" fumble problems to just having fumble problems, period. Teams already know when he's in the game to go after the ball.

The helmet-on-ball hit by the DB is what caused Smith to fumble, not because Smith was carrying the ball sloppily.

Exactly. He still scares me with his upright running style but is getting more forward lean and runs very hard. Huge talent. Eddie-like style runner.
Compared to Dunn who I have become more and more impressed with. Dunn reminds me more of MoC. Losing weight has really helped Dunn.
Both guys run very hard! And can catch the ball.

I'm sure he'll get things turned around. As others have mentioned, kind of a different breed than Carlos. Plenty of ability to run you over but also enough athleticism to be shifty and make you miss. Get the ball security down and he'll see more carries in the future. I'd like to see them split him out. Not sure what the straight line speed is, but that's a heck of a matchup against a DB or a safety in a nickel situation.

well, what do you do with smith? 136 all purpose yards, 1 TD, but another fumble. he's obviously a playmaker but if this goes on much longer i don't see this ending well.
