RB Warren Ball (transfer to Akron)

Warren Ball
6-2, 205 pounds
Running back
Columbus DeSales

Q. Let?s start with yesterday. How did that go over at your school? I know there were other athletes who went on to neat things. What was that day like? As you anticipated?

Ball: ?Oh, it was amazing. It was a little more than I anticipated. The entire student body was there. It was an outpouring of support from friends and family. It was a great experience to see fellow classmates and friends going to great colleges. It was a fantastic day.?

Q. What you think about what you saw with how your class shaped up compared to maybe where it was back in like June?

Ball: ?It?s ridiculous. I think we?re ranked maybe sixth now by ESPN and maybe fourth by Rivals. Urban Meyer has done a fantastic job and that whole staff with recruiting. It?s remarkable. I?m very excited for what?s ahead.?

Q. You were one of the guys who stuck by Ohio State through everything. Why was that?

Ball: ?Because I knew that (playing at) Ohio State was a dream of mine since I was a child. I?ve always been a Buckeye fan and I knew no matter what happens Ohio State is always Ohio State. It?s more than just one guy, per se. That?s where I want to be.?

Q. Do you remember what was being said around the dinner table when Urban was hired and what you guys said or what you were thinking as a family?

Ball: ?We were actually watching the television, and the day they announced it, it was on ESPN. It was amazing. We had a feeling that it might happen or even a hope that it might happen but to actually see it announced, it was remarkable.?

Q. Warren, these recruiting websites, they can go in either direction. They can blow you guys up, quote-unquote, or they can be a little bit critical, too. I remember one thing I read about you was that you were still unproven in terms of durability. Is that a fair statement because you?ve had some injuries, or what would your response to that be?

Ball: ?I don?t think so. I?ve played football for about nine years now and I never had injuries until my sophomore year, which was a torn groin. And then junior year was a high-ankle sprain, which meant I couldn?t put pressure on it. Just freak things, and that?s the game of football. Things happen. But I had a healthy senior season and I have a healthy career going forward.?

Five DeSales football players signed letters of intent to compete at the college level, including (from left) Alex Washington (Navy), R.J. Ball (Butler), Jalen Noble (Air Force), Warren Ball (Ohio State) and Charles Chandler (Kent State).

Many schools would be excited to send one student-athlete to the next level to study and compete in his-her respective sporting endeavor.

For DeSales, the opportunity was afforded to seven students, on national signing day at the school Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Warren Ball will matriculate down the road at Ohio State University as a running back, a commitment he made verbally a year-and-a-half ago.

"It definitely has been a journey," said Ball, "for over a year now. To finally have it over with, and to officially be a Buckeye, is definitely a blessing. I'm very grateful."

Ball remained steadfast in his commitment despite the upheaval the OSU program has been through.

He committed to a team coached by Jim Tressel, and remained so when DeSales alum Luke Fickell took over following Tressel's resignation amid NCAA violations.

Then, when two-time national champion coach Urban Meyer was hired in late November, Ball again remained an OSU recruit.

"He was committed from Day 1," DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins said of Ball, "and even with all the turmoil, his goal was to play at Ohio State, and he has that opportunity. He's never wavered from that, but regardless of who's coaching, as a freshman, you have to do everything all over again.

"Once he signed that letter, now it's time to get to work. He has the right mentality for that, and the right work ethic. I think he'll be excited to report in June and get going."

High-school football: Ohio State recruit eager for debut in ?Shoe
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday April 19, 2012

Brionte Dunn is already enrolled at Ohio State and going through spring practice, but the other blue-chip running back the Buckeyes signed this year ? Warren Ball of DeSales ? is getting ready to play on Friday in the Ohio North-South All-Star game in Ohio Stadium.

It raises a question: Who is getting the jump on whom? Dunn?s first public appearance in Ohio Stadium won?t come until Saturday, when coach Urban Meyer presents his first Ohio State spring game.

But as a member of the South team on Friday, Ball has first dibs.

?The anticipation is really building up,? Ball said yesterday before the South?s practice. ?I am really looking forward to playing in the stadium for the first time. It?s going to be my home for the next four years.?

He saw many games the past couple of seasons as a guest of the Buckeyes due to his high-profile status as a prospect. Friday won?t be the same as a Saturday in the fall, but Ball can imagine.

?I know it?s going to be fun,? he said.

Whether Ball will play this season is unknown. Dunn, from Canton GlenOak, appears to be making a bid for the No. 3 back behind Jordan Hall and Carlos Hyde after enrolling in January.

?There is a little bit of an advantage being here (early), but you catch up fast,? Meyer said. ?We?ll see what happens in training camp.?

Ball could have pursued getting a head start at Ohio State, too, but he said it?s tough to graduate early from DeSales.

?And the high-school memories, that?s a one-time thing,? Ball said. ?I wanted to enjoy that. I?ll be here in June. ? And I think it will be fair game.?

I don't know of any thing mild that requires surgery. Good luck to Warren. Hope that he heals quickly and gets onto the field. I thought that he might see some action early in the season. I guess depending upon the surgery he might redshirt but that is pure speculation right now. Best of luck to him!

Did you read "mid" or "mild"
