Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Do we re-sing Ocab for less, go after another SS, or keep Janish there? I'm leaning towards Janish. He hit about as well as Ocab and is by far a better defensive player.

I'm for Janish and Cozart battling it out in ST.

Not sure I like Gomes for the money and I'm leery of this Arroyo extension talk. Great guy to have around one more year at his current price but after that let youth be served (unless he's planning on turning some of that young pitching depth into something else).

Guess it's time.

Picked up options on Arroyo and Gomes
Declined on Harang and Cabrera

Ramon Hernandez's option was also not picked up (although they may still try to sign him).

As for Arroyo, I am fine with the option. I know there is supposed "long term talks." Yet the front office is not going to just say "no, he is gone after this year." Hopefully they just try and low ball him, then back off.

Gomes is ok if he is only platoon. If he is the main starter again, I will be pissed.

Harang and Cabrera....don't let the door hit you in the ass. Or do, I don't really care as long as you are gone.

First off, I want to admit that I am not as familiar with baseball offseason as the other big sports.

In my opinion, the biggest problem for the reds last post season was the lack of a true #1. Sure they had some great pieces on the pitching staff but there was no true ace.

I am assuming that there is no chance that they get Lee because he would command too much $ and have no interest in Cincy.

With that said, what would it take for the reds to trade for someone like Zack Greinke? He is a great young pitcher who is said to be on the trading block.

From what I remember Greinke didn't have a great year so his value may be down, but it would still take some talent, not Cliff Lee talent though. I think maybe Alonso and maybe another AA-AAA prospect plus a throw in could possibly get it done.

Grienke is more than a rental, though. It would take at least the same amount of talent it took the Rangers to get Lee. Alonso and one of the young starters plus a throw in is my guess. Who knows though. The Royals are not looking for a 1B prospect (they have one...I forget his name). Sadly, that is all Alonso is. I guess he could DH, but that further lessens his value. Maybe switch Grandal with Alonso. Maybe Billy Hamilton or Yorman Rodriquez, but I would hate to see them go.

BTW...I consider Mesaraco untouchable. I don't see the Reds dealing him under any circumstance.

as scott pointed out, don't mind Gomes' option being picked up ONLY if he isn't the everyday starter. Man we need a LF with a bat BADLY this year.

All the MLBTR talk about Arizona shopping Upton gives me wood.
