Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Gomes is starting in LF today.

It's a shame that the Reds will have to cut off their nose to spite their face when it comes to Gomes. He could be useful in the right role. The manager refuses to find that role though, so it will probably come down to removing him from the roster entirely to get him out of the lineup.

Gomes has no business getting in the lineup vs. a right hander, especially one with good breaking stuff like Carpenter.

On a good note, Alonso is beginning to tear it up in AAA and is playing left field. He is even hitting lefties close to the same as righties. With Lewis, Heisey, and Alonso all very viable candidates for LF, there is simply no reason the Reds should be trotting Gomes out there on a regular basis. He has 1 good month to his entire resume. That is it. Walt will need to step in and DFA his ass, because Dusty will keep praying to the baseball gods that Gomes turns in a month like last May. In the mean time, he is going to cost this team wins.

edit: Oops, it's McClellan today, and Carpenter tomorrow. Still a rightly though.

Per Mark Sheldon: Arredondo activated, Leake optioned to Louisville.

It's about damn time.

Yep, that one was only a matter of time. That is probably why Dusty used Leake last night. He wanted to squeeze one more inning out of him to save the bullpen, even though it made no sense to put him out there in the 7th.

Arredondo has major league stuff, and can pile up the K's. I haven't seen him pitch during his rehab, but his numbers looked really good. From his K rate (1.34 per inning) I am assuming his velocity is back in the mid 90's. If so, this would be a major upgrade in the bullpen.

I saw him pre injury and have been excited as hell about ever seeing him pitch for the Reds.

Dude was filthy, as they say. If he's even close to that, which isn't that uncommon anymore post TJ, this was a great move.

Finally a first pitch swing. McClellan has been lobbing them right over the plate on the first pitch. His weak ass 87 mph fastball should be put in the seats most of the time, especially where he has been putting it on the first pitch.

I don't understand teams that shift on Votto. He goes the other way all the time. I guess he doesn't hit many ground balls to the left side, but he hits liners all the time that way that could sometimes be caught by an infielder.

He hits a lot up the middle. The thing that strikes me as odd is, he's the kind of guy who can make an adjustment and punish a shift it seems.
