Rugby (6N, Rugby Championship, IRB 7s, etc.)

Fiji won the last stop (London) of the IRB 7s (Olympic) Rugby circuit but New Zealand won the whole series title again. NZ's Tomasi Cama (my all-time favorite rugby player - sorry, Nate) won the Player of the Year award.

I saw five of the circuit stops this year and really liked (as I've said before) the overall play and talent level. The top six or so teams were bunched pretty tightly and Australia is getting better and will continue to be dangerous. I was much happier with what I saw from the US post-midseason coaching change, even if the records didn't always look any better. I think we'll be much better next year. Finally, South Africa had a horrendous run of injuries and will be back strong next year.

Check out some of the replays on NBC/Universal this summer. It's a great spectator sport. Even 15s purists like Steve19 have to admit it.

A tiny university from Marietta, Ga., will bring its rugby team to PPL Park this weekend with a huge chip on its shoulder.

Fifteen of the 16 teams that will play for the Collegiate Rugby Championship were invited, based on program prestige and fan appeal. The other - from Life University - earned its way in by virtue of winning a qualifying tournament earlier in the year.

Life, which has a total undergraduate enrollment of 792 students, won a similar 7s tournament in Las Vegas back in February. The Eagles won seven matches in three days to claim the right to play at PPL.

Life is 3-0 and heading to the championship rounds tomorrow. Defending champs Dartmouth and rugby kings California will also be there.

Damn, Life University got knocked off in the semis by Arizona, 19-12. The Cats will take on Dartmouth in the final after the Big Green rallied in the final 3 minutes to beat Cal in an epic match, 21-19.

Hm, switched channels after Cal scored a huge try to end the half. Thought they'd take control and win. Forgot to switch back.

Looks like NBC is about to show a replay of the semifinals and then the finals after.

Zona's best player gets hurt in the first minute, basically playing now with one arm (and now he leaves the field). Another Cat just got helped off the field as Dartmouth goes up 7-0.

Big start for the Green.

Over the weekend, I saw a portion of the collegiate rugby on TV. I can't remember which teams it was in particular, but I believe it was Cal v. Dartmouth. There was a rather large player carrying the rock and he absolutely trucked someone. Does anyone know which play I'm talking about and whether there's a gif floating out there of it?

Hard day at the office for the Northern Hemisphere teams (England, Ireland, and Wales) losing to South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

I watched the England/SA match and while England did not play soft and scared, for once, even their best work was only enough for a 6-6 tie at the half and a, relatively, close loss against a relatively young Springboks side. This does not bode well for the next two tests. England could easily go home 0-3 and won't finish the tour better than 1-2.

Ireland was blown out by the All Blacks. Period.

Wales, which I'd thought was the closest in form to the Southern teams, lost 27-19 to an Oz team that had managed to lose to Scotland (the Indiana of international test rugby) the week before.

Baby Boks now hitting form. Second half was fun to watch!
