Scholarship Breakdown by Class

18:55 mark- Urban says we're at 85-86 scholarships. Obviously, there's more behind the scenes going on that isn't out there in the public, but I'm sure he's referring to other guys with injury concerns that may not be able to continue rather than transfers. Makes sense why we went heavy on certain positions, specifically at O-Line (Urban mentions OT as a position we are really thin at and needed 3-4 guys in this class).

EDIT: Another thin position is at corner. Kerry says at 3:45 that all 5 of the DBs we brought in are going to start off at corner. I was thinking that they all seemed like true corners when trying to break them down between CB & S on my list, but goodness.

Jamal Dean never plays a snap at corner, IMO. The bigger question with him is does he grow into a LB ala Devan Bogard or Chris Worley. Norwood, Ward and EGW are corners to start. Arnette looks like a future safety to me. Granted Kerry Coombs knows more about these kids than I ever will but that is just my take.

Since we've entered a bizarro world where Alabama fans/writers are tabulating oversigning by OSU, I thought I'd review the attrition:

2009

1. Dismissed - Berry - off-field issues. Gave up studies/team for personal struggles.
2. Dismissed - Newsome - academically ineligible. Xfer to Ball St, thrived, drafted, plays for Colts.
3. Dismissed - Carter - academically ineligible. Transferred to juco. Went CFL, finally reaching pros.
4. Dismissed - Clarke - started as a youngster, dismissed for off-field incidents.

5. Transfer - Bellamy - early contributor, lost desire to play football. Walked away. OSU wanted him to stay.

(1. Pre-urban - Transfer - Longo - transferred to UC for playing time)

2010

6. Injury - Griffin - major ST contributor, played often, injured in yr 3. Medical waiver.
7. Injury - Hagan - projected medical waiver since a year before he signed his LOI. Grad assistant.
8. Injury - Mcvey - never healthy. Major talent that was never cleared medically. Waiver.
9. Injury - Moore - did not dress in rs senior year. Not sure if he was on a waiver, contributed as a GA IIRC.

10. Dismissed - Williams - off-field incident cost him his spot. Transferred.
11. Dismissed - Smith - dismissed as a contributing senior in the middle of the year. Multiple issues.
12. Dismissed - Turner - never actually enrolled, major off-field issues. I'm guessing the author counts him?

13. Transfer - Reed - played WR as a frosh, injured. Missed next year. Xfer to UF, where he played his first love: QB.
14. Transfer - Graham - pro style QB. Transferred to Hawaii as soon as Urban was hired.
15. Transfer - Durham - transferred after 2 years where he started at Pitt.

(2. Pre-urban - Louis - transferred after JT was fired.

Since we've entered a bizarro world where Alabama fans/writers are tabulating oversigning by OSU, I thought I'd review the attrition:

Here are the class-by-class recruiting totals for Ohio State and Alabama since 2007 (Satan's first season at Alabama):

...... OSU .. Ala
2015 .. 27 ... 23
2014 .. 23 ... 26
2013 .. 24 ... 25
2012 .. 25 ... 26
2011 .. 23 ... 22
2010 .. 19 ... 26
2009 .. 25 ... 27
2008 .. 20 ... 32
2007 .. 15 ... 25

We've "oversigned" just once (this past class) in those nine classes, while Alabama has done so in five classes including a whopping 32 recruits in 2008. We've signed 25+ only three times whilst Alabama has done so seven times. Alabama has signed more recruits than Ohio State seven of those nine classes, signing 232 recruits total (25.8 per class) compared to 201 recruits (22.3 per class) for Ohio State.

We have officially "lapped the field" in Big Ten recruiting.
But that doesn't mean that "on any given Saturday" someone will pull the upset.
There are still lots of good players and coaches in the Big!

Based on the article linked above I am updating the chart to remove Bogard, Reevers and Tanner - leaving us at 87.

Personally I am much less interested in how we got to 85 this year than the number of ships we will have for next season - and none of these three nor a grey shirt will help with that issue.

That said, please do not speculate on who the non-qualifier might be.
