Caught a good one.

Well, since the campus of tOSU didn't scare this kid off, (there's more people on this campus than there are total within about 100 square miles of his residence in SD), then maybe so. Never figured out how the recruiting mags could compare a kid from Fla/TX/GA/Cali/OH with a kid from SD realistically. Just a dumb thought, do they still play 7-on-7 football there? He passes the look test, and just from his background he's my new favorite recruit for tOSU......Go Bucks. Will be fun to see how well Warriner coaches up this 3*, and what his potential might become. Just a general comment, we're bagging a bunch of 3*'s, with not a lot of big time offers, wonder how many of the 'big-time' schools NOW will take a run, now that tOSU has put their brand on these kids?

Schmidt is actually a 4 star on both 247 and Rivals, albeit that we were his only major offer it seems. I think he is a tad under the radar just from being from SD but I am sure he affirmed his talent in person at camp. Not sure if he attended any combines?

I don't know if this is a trend or just coincidence, but it seems like the Buckeyes are targeting a lot of long, lean, athletes with good upside potential (Schmidt, Burrow, Green, Dean).

If Schmidt signs with Ohio State, he will become the first Buckeye football player from the State of South Dakota.

A lot of Buckeye "fans" (not here) seem to think that this kid can't play because he's from South Dakota. Well, Riley Reiff (All American at Iowa in 2011, first round draft choice of the Detroit Lions in 2012) is also from South Dakota.

CongratulAtions to Mr. Schmidt. I don't care where he's from, if he can help the Buckeyes become a better team then I'm all for his addition. Can't wait to see how he progresses by working with coach Warriner. Load up on the big uglies every year and build that quality depth.

BIRMINOLOGY: YOU DON'T KNOW SCHMIDT

"But Jeremy, he's only a three-star!"

No matter what you know about new Buckeye commit Grant Schmidt — and in most cases the answer is "very little" — you don't know Schmidt.

What you do know is that he's big (6-foot-6 and 275 pounds), that he currently has a bit of an underwhelming offer list (Ohio State bested Minnesota for his verbal commitment). You may think that the South Dakota native is a "stretch" or a "reach" by the Ohio State coaching staff, but you'd only think that if you were not paying attention to Urban Meyer's recruiting history; Meyer would rather bank a scholarship than give one away to a player he didn't feel could contribute.

Ohio State signed five very talented offensive lineman in 2014 and Schmidt becomes the first of what could be a four-man class in 2015. Where Schmidt excels at this point in his development is simple athleticism. He's not your average, plodding, big-bellied offensive lineman. This is a young man with elite measurables who is still learning the art of being a lineman. One thing that's for sure, he's got the tools that all offensive line coaches would love for everyone lineman they have to start with.

One source close to Schmidt's commitment raved about him.

"He's very athletic, he's explosive," the source told 11W. "He's smart, he's a hard worker and is very coachable. (He has) huge upside."

Contd...

How can anyone say someone can't play based on where they are born. That is honestly absurd. Example. Its not that Americans can't play soccer at a high level, its because soccer doesn't attract the AAA athletes in America. Good athletes with the right body and mind for a position can play, they just need to be brought up to speed.

When I first saw Schmidt and SD
I immediately thought of James Laurinaitis and Wayzata MN
No one sees anyone play out there... so they can't get good ratings
but man, did that work out well for us the first time

The Buckeye recruiting net runs far and runs deep.......amazing how one uncovers a nugget of gold from a lot of rocks. If Urb can keep this coaching staff together, I would bet hard cash that they can 'coach up' a lot of these 3*'s to be like Malcomb Jenkins, James Laurinitis, AJ Hawk, and several others that have donned the Scarlet & Gray over the decades. Go Bucks
