OL Grant Schmidt (transfer to Cincinnati Bearcats, transfer to South Dakota St. Jackrabbits)

A burb of Minneapolis... OK.. and that's an area known for top shelf D1 talent?
They rated Animal a 3-star...

If we're talking hockey, you have a point

If this kid is in FL, Texas, Ohio, GA, Jersey... everyone in football-world knows about him

The Buckeye recruiting net runs far and runs deep.......amazing how one uncovers a nugget of gold from a lot of rocks. If Urb can keep this coaching staff together, I would bet hard cash that they can 'coach up' a lot of these 3*'s to be like Malcomb Jenkins, James Laurinitis, AJ Hawk, and several others that have donned the Scarlet & Gray over the decades. Go Bucks

Funny how people keep bringing up 3* kids when we haven't gotten all that many consensus 3*s since Urban has been the coach. Schmidt is a 4star on 2 major sites. I'm sure the staff will coach up all the guys to the best of their ability, or face getting passed up quickly in favor of their younger counter parts.
And having coached in Utah, we shouldn't be that surprised that Urban found a kid from South Dakota. I'd expect us to go after more kids from Kansas, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, UtAh and the Dakotas if the staff feel the kids deserves an offer.

This is true. Wayzata is a well funded program in a large metro area. However, their football program competes with their hockey program and, unlike Dublin (with the exception of maybe 2 metro area high schools) there are no other other high school football programs they play that would be considered average in Ohio. Cretin Derham Hall (Jashon Cornell's school) is the only school in a rather large radius that has any pedigree. Grant probably has to travel 4 hours to some of his games.

I'm just pointing out your use of "out there"... South Dakota is much more football wilderness than Minnesota especially Wyzata (a public school sports powerhouse in a rich suburb). It was a stretch comparison. Though I do agree is Schmidt was playing in any of the football factory states he would be higher rated

K.. but if you're gonna hang on my specific words.. you can put a bullseye on me and go for it..
cuz it ain't like I'm going to wordsmith a message board post

In looking at the origination of college football athletes.. Minn is #35.. going neck and neck with CT, ID and NM.. each with about .4%
SD isn't even listed in top 41
thus my point.. guys that rate football players are not very likely attending games in Minn or SD
Texas, FL, Cal, GA, Ohio represents 60%+ of all the kids that play college football

I have a feeling this diamond in the rough... could be a very good find

And to piggy back off of that, he is still rated a 4 star by two of the main sites despite that disadvantage. Only reason I am even interested in his state is that he would be our first guy to ever sign at OSU from SD, which is pretty cool. Kid is very talented and I am excited to see him in this class.

Roger Maris was born in MN and raised in SD. First pro team was the Indians. Also, Jay Gatsby was from North Dakota if I recall correctly and he did well after moving East. Some how these points tie into the conversation. Haha

Three Ohio State commits get rankings adjustments
The one move down for Ohio State was Grant Schmidt. He's now a high three-star with an 87 grade. He was one we felt like we had ranked a little bit too high initially, further review of his film and where other offensive tackles around the country are ranked didn't merit him holding onto that fourth star in our eyes. He remains a high upside player though. With his frame and experience, he has a shot to develop quickly in Columbus.

ahhh, the crapshoot that is college football recruiting. I'm pretty sure that after watching all 20,311 OT in the nation, my eyesight, (plus my memory), would be a bit blurred, and would not remember which kid was which. Put a star on him and move on. Heck, if he was offered by tOSU, that's worth an extra star right there. 'Course if he was offered by Alabama (insert SEC team name here), then he's auto-magically a 4* player......I think Brady Taylor and Evan Lisle will be studs, once they get some weight distribution (thanks Mickey Mariotti), and technique (thanks Tom Warriner), and go against the big time DL recruits that tOSU has. No one can measure heart, until it is laid on the table. I could go into all the first round draft choices that tOSU has had that were 3*'s, but we all know those. Uncovering the 'hidden gems' of a player potential is what these coaches are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do. UFM and his crew of coaches don't really have extra schollies to take a flier on a kid, unless they (in a concensus meeting), feel like he'll - at least be competitive, and be able to step up if the kid in front of him goes down with an injury. I rather praise Grant for 'stepping up in class' and going to a football factory like tOSU from his small town. This kid shows competitive spirit, rather than taking the 'safe' route of starring at SD State. My hat is off to him. I will be rooting for him, and for other kids like him, who reach for the brass ring in the sport that they love. Apologies for the rant, but other than a momentary thrill of recruiting thrills, don't really give a rip, as long as these kids want to be Buckeyes. Go Bucks, and all the kids reaching for the stars.

Rant appreciated. And "small town kid" triumph stories aside, it will quite something to watch if the two giants (Feder and Schmidt) end up turning themselves into good enough linemen to start on Buckeye/Warriner offensive lines.

GRANT SCHMIDT HAS CHANGE OF PLANS
It's getting to that special time of year when a few future Buckeyes ready themselves for the next step in their life: enrolling early in college. One Buckeye commitment who had not originally planned on early enrollment, Grant Schmidt, has been working hard to do just that after all.

"I have to finish an online government class and take the SAT, basically just bust my (butt) but I think I can do it," Schmidt said about getting to Ohio State in January. "I just finished my application, it was pretty long."

As an offensive lineman in a class that could finish with five lineman, Schmidt sees the chance to enroll early as very valuable.

Continued...

If he enrolled early, that would be awesome news towards depth on our Oline. With him still being quite raw, he'll get to play top competition, learn the play book, and learn college level technique. Hopefully he can get in early and get right to work. It'll only pay off, ask Marcelys Jones who's been in the 3 deep all year as a true frosh
