SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

Often overlooked, Lighty just wins

AP Sports Writer / March 24, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio? There's a film clip that Ohio State coach Thad Matta loves showing to his players.

It's not of a great victory, a stirring last-second shot or even a painful defeat.

It features David Lighty, who had unknowingly broken a bone in his foot earlier in the Dec. 17, 2008, game against Jacksonville, continuing to play.

"He's got a broken foot. And he's running back and he makes this incredible effort and steals a pass," Matta said. "The point (for the players watching it) is, you're perfectly healthy and you're not playing hard. This guy's got a broken foot and this is the energy he gives us."

Lighty is probably not the first person you'd notice on Ohio State's powerhouse basketball team.

Jared Sullinger, the meaty freshman center? Sure. Or maybe silky smooth shooter William Buford or 3-point specialist Jon Diebler.

But make no mistake about it: The fulcrum of the Buckeyes is the fifth-year senior who's been through so much.

"I've said since the beginning: I love him. I think he's the (Big Ten) MVP. He probably won't get it because people aren't smart enough," Illinois coach Bruce Weber said earlier this season. "He does everything that you need to win the game. Nothing against Sullinger, he's tremendous. The other guys are great. But Lighty, to me, is their heart and soul and he's the reason they win."

David Lighty energizes Ohio State
By Brian Bennett

CLEVELAND -- Ohio State showed up at Quicken Loans Arena for an early-morning shootaround this past Saturday in between the second and third rounds of the NCAA tournament. Watching David Lighty, you might have thought it was the Final Four.

Lighty ran onto the court in the near empty building shouting, "Let's go!" Two arena workers sitting at the top of the arena let out an "O-H." Lighty returned the cheer by screaming "I-O!" at the top of his lungs.

That was just a regular morning for the Buckeyes senior, whose energy and boundless optimism provide the fuel for the tournament's No. 1 overall seed.

"There will be times where I've just gotten out of bed and my bones haven't even woken up yet, and he's already jumping up and down," teammate Dallas Lauderdale said. "It just gets me juiced up as well. He's always happy and in a good mood."

Ohio State (34-2) heads into its Sweet 16 matchup against Kentucky on a major roll, having thrashed its first two tournament opponents by a combined 61 points. On a team that seems to have a peg for every hole, Lighty is the consummate glue guy.

"He holds the whole thing together," senior Jon Diebler said. "He's someone you need to have on your team to be successful."

7 of 7-are you kidding me?

What Lighty did aganist George Mason is really almost unbelieveable when you think about it...7 of 7 three pointers, all contested shots. When that is happening it is hard to beat the Buckeyes.....21 un-answered points....this guy can be amazing when he is on.

I'm not letting this thread go to the alumni section lying down.

My last 2 years as a student at Ohio State got to work within the athletics department. All I can say is that there's not a more stand up guy that's representing our university then Mr Lighty (his fellow seniors Diebler and Lauderdale are also class acts). Really disappointed to see these guys have to end it like this. Will be hard for Buckeye basketball to replace these 3, not sure it will be the same.

loved you David... I wasn't always confident with the ball in your hands but you always seemed to make the right play. Your defense was spectacular...and even underrated today.

Not many 6'6 players can consistently shut down power forwards or wing guards. You have a long career ahead of you and Buckeye nation will always be behind you.

We get it.

David Lighty came into OSU the same year as me, and lived through all of the ups and downs that I've had the joy of watching through his career here. Comfortably slotted as one of my favorite buckeyes of all time, regardless of sport.
