While the football game on Saturday was disappointing for Ohio State fans, halftime as always did not disappoint. Fans at the game got a special treat as the Spartan Marching Band made the trip to Columbus for the game meaning those in attendance got to see the two best marching bands in the Big Ten perform.

The Spartan Marching Band led off halftime and as a couple people on the video can be heard saying, they are a bigger band that TBDBITL as they include some woodwinds as well as a color guard. The SMB show was dedicated to Marvel Comics, featuring music from Guardians of the Galaxy, salutes to Iron Man and Spiderman. Up next was more music featured in Guardians of the Galaxy, “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Aint No Mountain High Enough” before the show concluded with the theme from The Avengers. The SMB has always been known for having a great sound and drum line and both really shone on Saturday. Many OSU fans probably noticed that the MSU band has a very different style of drill compared to the OSUMB; the SMB tends to perform more a more contemporary style of drill with more set formations and less motion that the OSUMB. The Spartan Marching Band performs this style very well and it is easy to see from this show why they are considered one of the best bands in the country.

Following the performance by the Spartan Marching Band, it was time for The Ohio State University Marching Band to take the field with a show dedicated to the 50th anniversary of one of the most beloved movie musicals ever, The Sound of Music. The show got off to a fast start with the famous image of Maria in front of the mountains as the band played the opening of the title song. The band then segued into “Do-Re-Me” which was set to some block drill. Up next the band put on its own performance of “The Lonely Goatherd” complete with dancing marionettes. Considering the weather, it was appropriate to play “My Favorite Things” which featured rain making a flower grow as well as a large kitten and a pair of presents. The band was then joined on the field by the OSU chorals groups for “Climb Every Mountain” before the show then appropriately concluded with “So Long, Farewell”.

This was another great show that featured a combination of the animated formations that the band has become famous for, some traditional block drill, and a few more contemporary formations. The inclusion of the OSU chorus was a nice touch, not only giving these great singers a chance to shine in front of a huge crowd but it also demonstrated the musicality of the band as they had to blend with the singers.

The band will only get a short break for Thanksgiving this week as they report back to campus on Friday before busing up to Toledo. By tradition, the band never stays in that State Up North, instead staying in Toledo before any game up there. The band will be performing a concert on Friday night at the Stranahan Theater starting at 7:30 pm; tickets are still available (http://www.stranahantheater.org/event/the-ohio-state-marching-band/). The band will then get up early on Saturday to bus to Ann Arbor for the game before then heading back to Columbus.
