TE Blake Thomas (official thread)

Jacoby Boren and Blake Thomas are two recruits who were on board before Tressel?s departure. They stuck with the program through everything and seem to feel they?re going to be rewarded, though both admit they don?t know everything about him. Boren is Lewis? prep teammate at Central in Pickerington, while Thomas is a tight end out of storied St. Ignatius in Cleveland.

?I am very excited to play for Urban Meyer,? Thomas said. ?He knows what it takes to win games and I have a lot of faith in him as a head coach. I can?t guarantee that national championships will follow, but what I can tell you is that our dedication and hard work combined with his coaching ability will be very hard to stop. I don?t know too much about him but I do know he?s a good coach and knows how to run a program.?

Less than three weeks removed from helping St. Ignatius win its record 11th Division I state championship, tight end Blake Thomas said he got a text in the morning about the sanctions.

"I wasn't really surprised and was kind of prepared for it," said the 6-4, 240-pound Thomas. "It's only one year. I have plenty of time to play in bowls."

However, Thomas said he did have hopes the NCAA penalties would not be too harsh.

"Yeah, I was kind of thinking of that," said Thomas. "After all that [OSU] has done with coach Tressel stepping down, some guys de-committing, taking scholarships away. They did as much as they could.

"But like I said, we were ready for it. It really is a bummer."

Anyone think that Blake Thomas could end up red-shirting and converting to a OT? I was impressed on how well he handled Strobel 1 on 1. To me, blocking is the strongest part of his game. DIdn't appear to be used in the passing game much at St. I.

SI recently did a high school All American team for this year. Blake was honorable mention at Tight end. I would say the chances are extremely remote at best.

Rumor: Blake Thomas - career finished due to chronic injuries

Saw this over on 11W:
Blake Thomas Injury

I haven't seen anything posted about this and please note that this information was passed along from a friend of a friend of the family (the sourciest of sources I know). We should wait for an official statement or 11W staff confirmation, but I am hearing that Blake's career might be over as well. He suffered numerous "stingers" last year and the medical staff was very concerned that he could have serious complications if he were to further hurt himself. This is terrible news as everyone in the CLV/Buckeye/Ignatius family was really rooting for this hard working kid.
I really hope this isn't the case, but that's what I heard. Terrible news if true.
This follow up post is by an individual who claimed to be Thomas' father when there were rumors Blake might transfer back in the spring:

Unfortunately this is true. Blake has had several severe 'stingers' over the past year and when we had a thorough MRI and some other tests done after last Saturdays scrimmage - in which he played very well I might add - they revealed a condition in his neck that is causing nerve damage. With every hit he risks the chance of paralysis in one or both arms. The doctors on the OSU staff - who are absolutely outstanding - told Blake that they could not let him continue due to the high risk. He was/is devastated. He loves his teammates, coaches and OSU. Although he won't be on the field he will be with his teammates in spirit. Go Bucs!

Ohio State tight end, former St. Ignatius star, Blake Thomas sees football career likely end with injury
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
August 17, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A week ago, the Thomas family had one of those weekends, seeing the opportunities ahead for one child and helping another child deal with disappointment.

At St. Ignatius, senior John Thomas took over the full quarterback duties when fellow senior quarterback Pete Mahoney was unfortunately lost for the season to an ankle injury.

At Ohio State, redshirt freshman tight end Blake Thomas found out that his college football career is almost certainly over.

?One's career is flourishing and the other's is most likely ending,? their father, Kevin Thomas, told Cleveland.com today.

The decision on Blake Thomas was made after he suffered another stinger in practice last Saturday. It was something he had dealt with before while redshirting during his first season in Columbus in 2012. Kevin Thomas said the OSU medical staff wanted to investigate the issue further, and an MRI revealed a chronic condition that could put Blake at risk for much more serious injury if he continued to absorb hits.

?It's too bad,? Kevin Thomas said. ?They haven't completely ruled him out, but there's concern if he took a large hit he could risk paralysis. They shut him down. When it comes to the neck, you don't take any chances there.?

Those neck/spine/back injuries are really nothing to be messed around with. I can see where it could've become a scary situation.

I hope, if indeed he's forced to step away, his college academic career thrives.
