Jeff Heuerman catches a pass and dives in for the second TD of the game. Barron Collier led Cypress Lake High School 21 to 9 in first half action in a game played at Barron Collier High on October 8, 2010.

NAPLES ? As thousands of high school football players make their college decisions official Wednesday, National Signing Day will be nothing but a formality for Jeff Heuerman.

The first Wednesday of February has become as important a day on the college football calendar as the first practice or the national championship game. While players can make non-binding verbal commitments at any time, Wednesday is the first time high school seniors can sign national letters of intent, locking them into their college programs.

National Signing Day has taken on a life of its own in recent years. Players stage extravagant ceremonies, announcing their college choices on live television by selecting the hat with their team logo from a group of three or four at the signing table. ESPNU provides hours and hours of coverage, and recruiting websites such as Rivals.com, Scout.com and 24/7 Sports go all out.

For Heuerman, there will be no drama, no made-for-TV suspense. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end made his college choice last spring and, since graduating from Barron Collier a semester early in December, he's been an Ohio State student for weeks now.

?I already feel like I am a Buckeye,? Heuerman said. ?We had a real hard team run (last week). After that, you already feel like you're part of it, letter of intent or not. Once you attend your first class, there's no backing out. I'm already here and I love it.?

Heuerman visited Ohio State on a recruiting trip to the Midwest in April. He fell in love with the Buckeyes, and gave coach Jim Tressel his verbal commitment just two days later.

He never wavered on his decision. Heuerman wanted to be a Buckeye so bad that he worked hard to get his diploma early so that he could head to Columbus for the spring semester.

On Dec. 30, Heuerman, ranked the 18th best tight end in the nation by Rivals.com, left Naples for Ohio. He moved into the dorms on New Year's Day, and started classes and weightlifting Jan. 3.

?The guys are awesome,? Heuerman said of his new teammates. ?One of the things I like most about Ohio State is, a lot of programs have cliques, but here it's one big family.

?There's nothing I don't like. Even the cold is kind of nice.?

VIDEO: Signing Day: Barron's Lohmann, Campbell, Heuerman make it official
By NICK KRUEGER

NAPLES ? An Ohio State cap sat in front of a vacant chair between Torrey Campbell and Joey Lohmann as the two Barron Collier defenders waited to sign their letters of intent on Wednesday afternoon.

After coaches, friends and fellow players all shared memories of the two on stage, the head that the Buckeye hat was meant for arrived, only it was far too big for the hat on the table.

Barron saw off Campbell and Lohmann while being paid a visit from former tight end and linebacker Jeff Heuerman via a Skype connection projected on the auditorium screen behind them. Heuerman has already enrolled at OSU, and was already wearing his new scarlet No. 86 jersey while chatting from Columbus.

Though getting Heuerman on screen was a little more complicated, his presence brought a more sentimental tone to the ceremony when he took the opportunity to thank his father. Heuerman?s family sat on stage, and his father, Paul, spoke to those in attendance about finding the right fit for them. The senior Heuerman was a captain on Michigan?s 1981 basketball team.

?Ohio State?s great, the Florida Gators are great, but if you can find a school where you fit, whether it?s Division I or Division III, get good people around you,? he said. ?That?s what it?s all about.?
