Tom Herman (Head Coach FAU Owls)

Urban Meyer’s advice to Tom Herman: “Step back and stop meddling”
By Doug Samuels on March 12, 2015

Tom Herman’s first few practices on the field as a head coach were more of a challenge than he was expecting, and it had nothing to do with his new team.

After being very hands on as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator the past decade straight at places like Texas State, Rice, Iowa State, and Ohio State, taking a step back wasn’t as easy to do as Herman originally thought.

“I have an unbelievable coaching staff that is really, really good at what they do, so I try not to meddle as much as I would like to when I get the itch to get out there and coach. My fun comes the first 10 minutes of practice when I get to work with the punt team and get to be hands on and coach technique and that stuff.”

Dude has definitely taken Urban's blueprint. The drills, the competitiveness, the verbiage ("two steps beyond", "1-0"). Everything.

UH has even scheduled a student appreciation scrimmage and a "Life Skills" program (e.g., Real Life Wednesdays). There is a buzz amongst former players, students, alum, and high school recruits. Herman's going to do big things there.

I imagine he will be a head coach at a power 5 school within 4 years.

Herman has literally taken Urban quotes verbatim and just changed the name of the school ...

Major Applewhite's road to Houston OC job went through Ohio State

...

"It's not Major Applewhite's offense. It's not Tom Herman's offense. It's the University of Houston's offense," said Herman. "When you get at our point in our careers, a lot of guys go, 'Well, this is how I do things.' Well, I need a guy that can take what we've done -- whether it was at Ohio State, Iowa State or Rice -- and say here it is, learn it and if you have something that fits within our core beliefs and values and can make us better, I'm all for it. ...

For like 2 years before somewhere bigger swoops in.
If he succeeds**, there will be a B12/B1G/PAC/whatever school that'll take a keen interest. That's when it really gets interesting, and choosing that next school is a big step too (see Hazell at Purdue)

** and it's honestly hard not to see him succeeding at the Mid Major level where a HC can get 9+ wins by basically continuing to be a Coordinator and make 1 side of his team badass.

That's a big domino. Could tip off something special.

This is from April 12: http://footballscoop.com/news/tom-herman-is-looking-to-build-a-fence-around-houston/

“I don’t know about each individual situation but if we’re all serious about doing this then we’ll have to talk and see who all is on board and who’s iffy,” said Katy product Collin Wilder said. “We’re still trying to pan everything out and see where everyone is at. I think if one or two guys do it, everyone else will,” Wilder said of the possibility of a large group committing to the H-town takeover. “My situation is complicated right now being committed to Texas Tech and that’s why I haven’t really promoted anything yet. But I feel like if everyone buys into this we could put together a really good team. It would be like a Houston area all-star team.”

Collin Wilder (a 4-star Safety prospect) decommitted from Texas Tech five days after that statement.

"H-town takeover" was an event Herman hosted in early April where he pitched a few dozen Houston area kids his vision of making UH a 2010's version of the 80's Miami Hurricanes. If he can get full buy-in, he could build a stacked team and never have to travel more than 100 miles in any direction from campus.
