Game Thread tOSU at Wiscy, Nov 17th, 3:30 ABC

3 point dogs on the road. Get the W at Camp Randall. M*ch*g*n week. Be happy. Buckeyes will be good: trust the coaches. They're doing a helluva job with the talent we have. Very impressed all year by every units & groups coaching. We are going to make some noise next season. Sad we won't be bowl elgible, thanks Gene, for the extra practices and a shot at ND too. Fuck M*ch*g*n.

Well, yeah, I did think the team was worried about setting the record and it showed. Everyone in the stadium knew they were going to run it up the middle. I would've like to have seen a bootleg by Phillips there or at least a playaction.

I was talking more about the defensive gameplan they put together for Miller. That was probably the best the Wisconsin defense has played all season. The overtime letdown was disappointing though.

Like I've said, I feel a lot better about heading to Penn State next weekend after this game.

Defensively they looked good. Penn State plays a much different style than we do, with a completely immobile QB, but I don't think there's much reason to be concerned. Plus the boys won't want to head to the title game finishing third in the division, so I see it as a pretty comfortable Wisconsin win...if they play like tonight, that is, and not like they did at Oregon State.

Why is everyone criticizing the coaching staff? Herman wasn't out there making bad reads and looking completely lost....

Because that's what people do now. Fire Fickell. Fire Herman. Obviously Urban can't fill a staff. Fire them all.

Stupid. This is the EXACT reason I don't tune in to the local radio anymore. (Yes, more so than D Stanley voicing his crap opinion over the air waves as fact)

No but he could have seen the bad reads and called something else. I was screaming for more Hyde the entire second half. It was just bad all the way around. Bad QB play, bad reads, bad blocking, bad WR play all over the place, bad TEs, bad playcalling, bad putting too much on the defense in bad field position, bad everything. But a win is a win is a win, especially this year...so I am not happy, I am ecstatic. One more to go.

I don't recall seeing anyone say fire Herman, but I bet you he would be the frst to admit he will not put this game on his resume tape if he ever goes to look for another OC job.

I don't think anyone said Herman should be fired. Braxton did not play well, but it felt like 2011 at times with the predictibility of the playcalling, specifically some of the designed QB runs.

I agree. I honestly thought I was watching Tresselball 101 in the second half. And they aren't a good enough team to do that this year, at least consistently.

My thoughts exactly. If Braxton isn't making good reeds then take that play away and make it a concrete play solely for Carlos.

What was the most troublesome about this game was that Wisconsin was able to essentially MAN HANDLE our WR's. Our current WR's need to get better or we're going to have an offense littered with Freshman out wide. Like Meyer said "I can't stand to watch when there is no vertical threat" and right now we have no threat what so ever. Sure Devin gave us glimps' of having that potential early but once teams could recognize him as our threat Devin has not done a great job at adjusting.

I'm convinced though that if Stoney catches that nice pass on the first drive this game turns out very differently. It seemed like Braxton was in a groove the first few drives.

Herman has done a great job this year coaching. That much has been pretty obvious from watching games and seeing some development.

That being said, this was easily the worst game of the year in terms of playcalling.

The offense looked pretty good early in the game. Miller was picking up good gains on the ground and the short passing game was working well. The problem was that OSU never seemed to make an adjustment, as far as I could tell. Wisconsin started keying solely on Miller and did everything they could to stop him on the ground, but they kept trying to run Miller on counters and some type of sweep. OSU was sporadic in calling short passing plays and was never able to effectively use the seam plays like they have all season.

In short, it just seemed like they decided they were going to go out of their comfort zone and see what happened. And it looked pretty awful. Taking Hyde out of the game plan also ham-stringed Miller as a rusher and the passing game never seemed to have a consistent plan.

Obviously parts of this game also rest on Miller's shoulder in terms of responsibility. He made some bad reads and wasn't able to make throws like they team needed him to and I'm a bit concerned with the lack of improvement in terms of consistent pocket presence. No idea why he still runs around in circles in the pocket and takes a 5 yard loss when he could easily just throw it away. He has so many garbage runs where he takes bad sacks and rushes, it's not good.

Braxton is still a bottom of the barrel passing quarterback. On the deep ball he threw out of the back of the endzone, Philly beat his man by a few steps on the inside seam route, but Braxton tried to get it to Spencer. It's unfair to put all the blame on the receivers, as Miller has to pull the trigger and recognize where to go with the ball.

I thought Herman called a fine game for the most part, but I'm with everyone else that has said Hyde needed more carries. He was putting up 6/7 ypc for most of the game and Miller barely had 2 ypc. The offense early on was pretty effective. If Stoney doesn't lose that early ball in the sun and if Miller leads Heuerman better on a couple routes to the flats so he doesn't fall down making the catch, the game could've been completely different.

So many drives stalled out in Wisconsin territory, it was bizarre. I put it more on Miller than Herman today. But as always, a win is a win!

OT loss leaves Badgers with a bad taste

Wisconsin's players and coaches will be able to take comfort knowing that in two weeks they will be playing in the Big Ten Conference title game, with a berth in the Rose Bowl on the line.

In the interim, however, the 21-14 overtime loss to No. 6 Ohio State on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium will be agonizing and take time to shake.
"Probably until we play them next year," junior defensive end David Gilbert said quietly.

UW (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten) will have to regroup quickly this week for its regular-season finale at Penn State (7-4, 5-2).

The Buckeyes (11-0, 7-0), who got a 2-yard touchdown run from tailback Carlos Hyde and fourth-down pass break-up from safety Christian Bryant to hand UW its second home overtime loss of the season, will win the Leaders Division title outright.

Penn State can finish second under first-year coach Bill O'Brien.

However, with the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions ineligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions, UW will represent the division in the title game, one victory away from a third consecutive Rose Bowl appearance.

UW quarterback Curt Phillips, who capped a 41-yard touchdown drive late in regulation with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Pedersen to help the Badgers force overtime, acknowledged the Ohio State players will enjoy bragging rights in the off-season.

But . . .

"We took care of our business and didn't get ourselves in (NCAA) trouble to where we can go play in the (Big Ten title) game," said Phillips, who finished 14 of 25 for 154 yards and a touchdown. "So we'll make the most of that. Talk doesn't really bother me."

This loss will bother the UW coaches and players for many reasons.
