tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Had a thought about the srategy of the staff this year. Did we want another OT? Absolutely. Would we bank any extra schollies not used on players we really want? Absolutely. But I have been thinking a lot about Urban's comments right before he was hired here or just after. He said something close to "in college football today you have to win right away." I think this was in part because he knew he had a special player in Braxton and knew the clock would be ticking on maximizing his talents. My point is that the O Line depth is clearly a concern but we shouldn't be surprised by the emphasis on offensive skill players to close out the class. Why? Because if you want to win NOW there is a case to be made that we didn't have any big play guys on offense.

Look around college football and you have seen lot of examples of guys coming in on the offensive side that make a big impact early. LOTS of examples. Urban commented several times about how shocked he was looking at our players intially and how there weren't any 'wow' players who could take one to the house at any time. Of course we wanted good lineman but if we couldn't find them we were going for a few extra skill guys that can make a big impact early. That's why we landed Smith. Now if by some chance we landed Clark/Wilson or both, think about that infusion of big players we would have in one class. It's incredible and it seems Urban feels it is what is needed to win a NC in 2013.

This is a good point. A guy like Clark or Wilson would have a good chance of contributing immediately. An OL wouldn't.

I also think that the 2014 OL is in better shape than many seem to think with the kids already here. Plus, the ability is there to be a very appealing option to some elite 2014 kids and it isn't out of the question at all for some of those kids to jump immediately into the two deep. We've even seen guys like Brewster who started as freshmen.

I think the old model of recruiting in which OL all redshirt and don't play until their RS sophomore or junior year is obsolete. Kids come to college much more physically mature, well coaches and ready to contribute early.

So this article isnt about osu, per se, but I think Miami's handling of this situation can help our staff recruit even more in south fl. Miami basically gift wrapped 2 all americans to fsu in thomas and kirkland. I hope to see our staff in booker t washington a little more frequently

I stand with wad.....I mean MD.

Totally agree. Especially when you think about it in terms of the extra scholarship for 2014 that is gained for every kid we miss out on down the stretch.

My fingers are crossed for Wilson and Clark, but with guys like Autry, Haden, Campbell, Hurd, Johnson, etc. all favoring OSU next year, being able to take an extra one or two of those guys would be awesome as well.

For example, missing on Wilson might mean OSU can take 3 speed WR/RB types next year instead of 2.

Rivals Predictions
Sorry if it's already been posted. I took a quick look, but didn't see it.

Elliot unanimously for Ohio State
Mixed on Bell and Elder
All Oregon and Texas for Wilson which surprises me

Update for today now has 5 experts predicting Bell to UT, 2 to the good guys, and one to Bama. All are still unanimous with Elliott to us. And finally, 6 have Elder going to Auburn and 2 have him coming to OSU.

That's where I'm at. My gut says we are done, but my brain says UFM doesn't finish signing day without one of Clark, Wilson, or Bell. Regardless, I'm with you...we have very limited numbers in '14 and seeing how we are in GREAT shape with Lattimore, Drake Harris, Autry, Hurd, Lonnie Johnson, etc., I want room for as many as possible. Of course Wilson and Clark are comparable talents and of course we'd rather have their talents here immediately rather than hold room for prospective '14 guys, but at least there is a silver lining if we do miss the,

We only bank schollies if we don't get top guys. We will end up with a strong 2014 class no matter what because Urb and the rest of the staff are top notch recruiters. Lets win now AND later. If we land 2 out of 3 from our big 3 we have a real shot at a NC right away. Just like we don't redshirt, we also don't "bank" schollies. We win NOW and we keep winning. Urb has created a culture of competition. He expects to be elite every year and that why top kids are into us. We will never be intimidated by any other school on the recruiting trail and we expect to sign everyone. Therefore we cast a national net and we only bank schollies if we miss out on elite talent. If we can sign them all now we will.

Doubtful. He uses the Five Star Friday line frequently.

I don't really follow him too closely on twitter, but have seen him use that...but does he usually only say it on Fridays? Or say that there's an early five star Friday? Sorry if that's a stupid question

Edit: ehh it's prob related to the Super Bowl in someway. I doubt someone would tell the coaches at halftime of the Super Bowl of a commitment

My predicted finish- Bell and Wilson. I don't included Zeke because he is already a verbal and nothing has come out to change that. We don't land Timmons or Elder because they don't have a committable offer IMO.
